2017 Alumy Creek Angus Bull Sale Welcome to our Annual on property Angus Bull Sale.

This year’s draft of 40 two year old bulls contains an excellent selection of both heavily muscled growth and carcase trait bulls with an excellent selection of calving ease bulls.

The bulls are very consistent displaying plenty of natural muscle, thickness and easy finishing ability.

The AI sires of the bulls are some of the best genetics available and are all EBV trait leaders within the Angus breed. This year also includes a selection of bulls by our own sires to give the benefit of 30 years of Alumy Creek genetic selection on both sides of the pedigree.

This is a very balanced draft of sale bulls and will suit any Angus market.

We aim to produce short gestation length, easy calving Angus bulls that are long, heavy muscled and easy doing to sire calves that weigh on the scales because that is what our customers are paid on. We select to breed Angus cattle that can produce a profit under commercial conditions. Because we retain the sisters to the bulls we sell, the mature cow size of our cattle must be sustainable in our harsh grazing environment and we always want to see that as lower than the 600D Wt EBV. We also apply stiff selection pressure for fertility—our heifers must calve as 2 year olds unassisted and must continue to go back in calf quickly to produce a calf each and every year. The cows that go in calf early and quickly have the oldest heaviest calf when it comes to weaning and kilos are what the industry still pays for. Clients always comment on the consistency, quality and performance of their Alumy Creek sired replacement females.

We breed for balanced performance, knowing cattle with good EBV figures can also have great structure and temperament. We use EBVs as a tool and not as our only selection mechanism for genetics. Our selection focus on growth and carcase produces cattle that can achieve extra performance kilos on grass in the paddock and with the potential to access flexible feedlot markets as the season may dictate.

We continue to embrace new technology and the sale bulls again were all tested with the Zoetis HDi50K DNA genetic worth MVP predictions. The bulls have all been parentage verified. The bulls have outstanding elite MVPs. Many of the bulls delivered top 1–7% results for the multiple traits we have selected on for years—Calving Ease, Adjusted Daily Gain, Growth for 200D, 400D and Carcase Wts, EMA, Tenderness and Retail Yield. These breed rankings are against all the genetic testing done on Angus cattle in Australia and NZ rather than against a single year drop cohort. Great to confirm that our bulls carry the genes for profitable performance even though our environment may not always allow them to express their full potential. Our bulls are paddock raised, supplemented with Finlay Texas hay since weaning and presented in strong forward paddock condition, ready to go out and work well for you.

The 2017 sale draft includes a selection of bulls by the feedlot performer EXAR Upshot, the muscle sire Connealy Earnan, the growth, carcase wt and tenderness sire Jindra Double Vision and the calving ease and carcase specialists Rennylea Edmund and Basin Excitement, our walking sire Carabar Wheelwright H215 (maternal brother to leading Australian sire Carabar Docklands) and the homebred calving ease and carcase sires Alumy Creek Gin & Tonic G12 and Alumy Creek Final Product H16.

EXAR Upshot is a popular all-rounder with calving ease, low birth weights, outstanding growth, muscle and yield. His progeny are a very consistent type, well-structured and stylish with extra performance on grass or grain. They also have an added softness and ease of finish coupled with a quiet temperament. His daughters do an excellent job with easily born good calves, great udders and join back in calf early. Upshot remains a breed trait leader for milk, EMA and Retail Yield and his sons were sale toppers at last year’s sale.

EXAR Upshot is the sire of three bulls in this year’s sale with outstanding sire potential sons on offer at Lots 1, 3 and 5.

New season sire Jindra Double Vision was selected for his superior structure and type, thick powerful hindquarter and bonus carcase wt, tenderness genomics and US feedlot performance. We have been super impressed with the excellent cattleman’s type of the Double Visions with added length, thickness and early growth plus a very quiet temperament. Double Vision is already an Aust trait leader for 400D and Carcase Wt. Expect him to improve with more progeny here as he ranks top 3% US for growth, daily gain, carcase wt & Feedlot and Beef $ Indexes as well as top 5% milk, docility and top 20% IMF. His progeny are thick, power bulls and his daughters are very soft well grown heifers that all joined early for us. There are 10 quality Double Vision sons on offer at Lots 2, 6, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 25 and 30.

New season walking sire Carabar Wheelwright H215 was selected for his impressive Australian bred pedigree and performance profile—he is a maternal brother to leading Australian sire Carabar Docklands whose sons have been topping sales around the country, but is sired by the Kansas Angus/ Carabar owned WA bred AI sire The Grange Wheelwright. We selected H215 for his added length of body, strong topline and balanced EBV profile and he has combined to breed very well with our cow herd. There are 13 Carabar H215 sons Lots 7, 8, 9, 11, 15, 22, 23, 28, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35.

This year we have two Earnan sons on offer, both commercially orientated easy finishing, well-muscled cattle. We do also have several grandsons throughout the catalogue. If you get paid on $ per kilo for your product check out the Earnan sons at Lots 24 and 29.

Rennylea Edmund is the well-known Australian bred calving ease and marbling bull who has produced sale toppers around the country. He is a trait leader for Calving Ease, Short Gestation Length, Days to Calving and Marbling. He is the sire of Lots 19 and 26, both out of 2yo heifers. Lot 26 was our selection for use to join 50 stud heifers.

Basin Excitement has been a very reliable sleep easy calving ease sire. His calves come early, are born easily and really grow fast. They are moderate sized, very structurally sound commercially focused cattle that finish easy and weigh heavy. He is a trait leader for short Gestation Length, 200D and 400D Wt. His sons are suitable for both heifers and cows. They are genuine sleep easy calving ease sires and we just love them. Basin Excitement is the sire Lots 20, 21 and 36.

Alumy Creek sired cattle have again performed well in the paddock, saleyards, weaner sales and Auctions Plus with top prices throughout 2016–2017. We continue to receive great feedback on the paddock performance of our cattle across a wide variety of environments and production systems.

Alumy Creek Gin Tonic G12 (by CC&7) and Alumy Creek Final Product H16 (by Final Product) are our B+ butt profile homebred sires that combine the calving ease with growth and quality carcase performance. They have produced attractive very well-muscled sons, with exceptional quiet temperament. G12 is the sire of: Lots 4, 10 and 40 and H16 is the sire of Lots 27, 37, 38 and 39.

Sale details SALE DATE AND PRIOR INSPECTION TIME: The sale will commence at 1pm on Saturday, 24 June 2017. All weather undercover shelter is provided. The cattle can be inspected by appointment made with the agents or vendors, at ‘Coldawinda’ on Saturday 17 June 2017 and also from 10am on the morning of the sale. Lunch and refreshments will be available on sale day.

SELLING SYSTEM: Sale of animals will be conducted under normal auction terms and conditions. Please check with the Selling Agents to obtain a buyer’s number if you are considering making a purchase. Please supply your PIC to the Agents. Successful purchasers are requested to give written advice to the Selling Agents, regarding transport arrangements, at the conclusion of the sale. All animals are sold exclusive of GST. INSURANCE: Is available from the agents on the day. We do recommend you take insurance out on your purchases.

DIRECTIONS: ‘Coldawinda’ is located 4kms south east of Tenterfield at 420 Scrub Road. When in Tenterfield, turn East off the New England Hwy at Clifton Street, on the Southern End of town (at the 50km speed limit sign).

Travel one block then turn right at the T intersection onto Scrub Road and travel 4kms on bitumen to ‘Coldawinda’ on your Right.

HERD HEALTH: All sale bulls have been tested negative PI (Persistently Infected) and have been vaccinated annually against Pestivirus with Pestigard vaccine. All sale bulls have been vaccinated with 7 in 1 (for Clostridial and Lepto), Vibrio and 3 Day Sickness vaccine. We recommend annual boosters. Johnes Disease: Alumy Creek Angus has tested negative and been part of the National Johnes Disease Market Assurance Program (JDMAP) for more than 20 years at MN3 level. We currently claim the transitional voluntary JBAS score of 7. Our bulls are eligible to enter all states without further testing except WA. Cattle Tick: Alumy Creek Angus is located in a cattle tick free area. Bulls can be held and blooded if required by arrangement. Parasites: Bulls were treated with Cydectin and Fasinex on 15 April 2017.

MANAGEMENT: Alumy Creek sale bulls are all quiet, well mannered cattle and are used to being handled on foot, with ATV Bikes and vehicles. They are used to being worked by dogs. All Alumy Creek sale bulls carry a freeze brand for easy identification in the paddock. They are rigorously screened for temperament. However this is no guarantee they will not misbehave under the pressure of sale day.

FERTILITY: All bulls have passed a physical examination and microscopic crush side semen test.

GUARANTEE: All bulls are sold with a 6 month guarantee as a calf getter valid for a period of 6 months from the date of sale. The vendor must receive a written notification together with a certificate from a registered veterinarian stating the nature of the infertility before the expiration of that period. Animals injured or lost as a result of accident, negligence or any disease, are not covered by this guarantee. Vendor liability relating to fertility claims will not exceed the purchase price of the animal and are limited to a credit equal to the purchase price less the salvage value which may be utilized to purchase a suitable replacement from a future Alumy Creek sale. PARENTAGE VERIFICATION and DNA HDi50K TESTING: All bulls have been parentage verified and genomic HDi50K tested. The MVP gene test results were excellent and have been incorporated into Breedplan. Many bulls were in the elite top of the breed result category. The DNA defect test status of all sale bulls for Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Fawn Calf Syndrome (CA) and Developmental Duplications (DD) is shown for each Lot. AM, NH, CA or DD (AMC, NHC, CAC or DDC) Carrier bulls are normal bulls and show no signs of the defect. An affected calf has a 25% chance of being produced only if both the bull and the cow are carriers for the same defect. We do not promote carrier bull use in Angus/ derived herds if the genetic status of cows is not known, but they are suitable for cross breeding with other breeds without risk of affected calves. HEALTH AND SAFETY OF VISITORS: Visitors enter the pens of their own risk. Dogs are strictly not permitted at the venue. Children under 16 are requested not to enter the sale pens. All the bulls are known to be of good temperament under normal conditions. However sale day is not ‘normal conditions’. If you enter the pens, take note of your surrounds and be conscious of your safety. Do not crowd the bulls, or loiter in the pens. Please use common sense and be alert at all times. Understanding Angus BREEDPLAN EBVs What is Angus BREEDPLAN? Angus BREEDPLAN is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus influenced beef cattle. Angus BREEDPLAN uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility) Angus BREEDPLAN includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and New Zealand Angus Association databases to evaluate the genetics of animals across Australia and New Zealand.

Angus BREEDPLAN analyses are conducted by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI), using software developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England. Ongoing BREEDPLAN research and development is supported by Meat and Livestock Australia.

What is an EBV? An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it.

These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).

Using EBVs to compare the genetics of two animals Angus BREEDPLAN EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected difference equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (e.g. they are joined to the same animal/s).

For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10 kg heavier at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40 kg (i.e. 20 kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).

Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400 kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (i.e. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).

Using EBVs to benchmark an animal’s genetics with the breed EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus or Angus infused animals in Australia and New Zealand.

To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to: • the breed average EBV • the percentile table The current breed average EBV and percentile table is provided in these explanatory notes.

Considering accuracy An accuracy value is published in association with each EBV, which is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV. EBVs with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50- 74% as of medium accuracy, 75-90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy.

Terms are strictly cash or approved cheque on the day of sale, unless prior arrangements have been made with the Auctioneer before the fall of the hammer.

Subject to the reserve price, the highest bidder shall be the purchaser.

In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer shall be the sole arbitrator and his decision shall be final.

The auctioneer may refuse to accept any bid, which, in his opinion, is not in the best interest of the vendor and shall have the right to refuse any such bid without giving any reason.

Where the vendor reserves the right to bid at the auction in respect of a lot and instructs the auctioneer to make more than one bid on his behalf, the auctioneer shall, prior to submitting the lot for sale by auction, announce in a clear and precise manner the number of bids reserved by the vendor in respect to that lot.

A bidder shall be deemed to be a principal unless, prior to the bidding, he has given to the auctioneer copy of written authority to bid for or on behalf of a person.

The last price called by the auctioneer shall be the amount at which the lot has been sold.

A bid cannot be made or accepted after the fall of the hammer.

All lots will be at the purchaser’s risk immediately after the fall of the hammer and no responsibility will be incurred by the auctioneer or vendor for their safekeeping. No exceptions shall be taken to any of the lots on delivery the whole having been open for inspection by the purchaser prior to the sale and on no account will any allowance be made.

Every person on the auction premises before, during and after the sale shall be deemed to be there at his own risk and with notice of the conditions of the premises. Such person shall have no claim against the auctioneer or vendor in respect of any injury sustained or any accident, which may occur from any cause whatsoever.

All cattle will be sold GST exclusive. GST will be added to the purchase price.

A 2% Outside Agents Rebate is available to Licensed Agents introducing purchasers in writing 24 hours prior to sale and settling on their behalf within 7 days of invoice.
