Shaping Art In ACP

inherently distinguish ACPs from conventional canvas or paper.

In a world where art can flourish on virtually any surface, embracing ACPs as an artistic medium is an exploration of uncharted territories. This fusion stands testament to the artist's willingness to transcend norms, daring to create a fresh dialogue between form, texture, and message.

In the ever-evolvingrealmof artistry, innovation servesas a guiding force, letting artists explore new horizons and redefine the boundaries of creativity. Dr. Lavanya Dhanagopal, who has been 15 years into Ceramic Research embraced Aluminum Composite Panels (ACPs) as her chosen medium for creating art. This

unconventional approach is a departure from conventional painting norms, introducing a fresh perspective that both challenges and enriches traditional artistic paradigms.

ACPs, primarily utilized in cladding and signage, may not seem an obvious choice for painting. However, Lavanya's audacious

decision to wield ACPs as their canvas demonstrates an inspiring endeavor to break away from the commonplace. This choice infuses her work with a unique blend of texture, dimension, and durability—qualities that

Artistry often thrives on experimentation, and Lavanya aptly demonstrates how a novel medium like ACPs can serve as an avenue for innovation. Through the lens of Lavanya's work, we gain an insight into how

6
The ADORNER - Facades And Beyond

innovation is not just a departure from the ordinary, but an invitation to forge an entirely new artistic narrative.

1. Please take us briefly through your artistic journey.

As early as I remember my childhood, I was always passionate about art and craft. Being an introverted kid, art kept me company. But like most of us, I grew up to become an engineer, the reason being the obvious. Thanks to the almighty, I had a deep understanding of

Chemistry. I survived Engineering, and 13 odd years in research, and 2 years in an Academic institution. Somewhere between engineering and career, I lost art. However, in a few instances I realized how much I miss being in art. I took up courage and undertook online/offline or any form of art course I could lay my hands on. I’m still learning, but I have gained the momentum in art. Currently, I’m in the process of polishing and improving the quality of my artwork.

than a decade, the occupational hazard got stuck with me, and I am telling this in a good sense! Everything that I do has to come down to breaking up the composition for clear understanding and figuring out the process and the recipe. The same logic I had applied to art as well - understand the composition of art, break out the painting process to have more command and recipe of the paint-making to have control over the whole process. In a nutshell, to be able to do all these research cum art, I decided to give it full-time focus. That’s how I got a chance to talk to Aludecor.

2. Why did you choose Aludecor’s ACP for your creation? Did you try painting on any other MCP (metal composite panel)?

There is a small story behind it. During my initial comeback days in art, I did some 50/60 paintings in a span of 1-1.5 years. Most artworks were done on canvas and pasted over MDF. All of those paintings were being hanged in the Montessori school run by my sister. During COVID, we lost access to the school and during that year’s monsoon season moist wall

destroyed most of my art work.

That incident got me to think, you pour so much time, energy, and dedicated focus into a painting you expect it to last for a long time. Maybe even forever. Every painting is the legacy of the artist. That is where my search for painting on alternate surfaces that is resistant to environmental effect began.

During my online lectures, I heard about composite panels and treated wooden panels are being used by artists in Europe and in USA.

I tried to paint over Acrylic Polymer sheets and metals sheets, they are ok but metal rusts and Polymer is not that sturdy. I decided Polymer coated Metals sheets should do the trick, theoretically.

ACPs were sold sparingly in USA and in Europe, with many variations

-Plain composite panels

-Surface treated panel for better paint adherence

-Traditional canvas/linen is pasted over composite panel.

Let alone they are sold expensive overseas, shipping and customs made it very less appealing to conduct art trials over them.

I was in research for more

The ADORNER - Facades And Beyond 7

I have decided to locally source the panels and figure out the process of painting by myself. I visited many Composite Panel dealers and hardware. I requested to buy cut pieces, but they were only available in 4x8 ft. Even though I was willing to give a try to buy a full piece, the shop owner was not ok to cut composite panels into pieces. (I mentally made a note someday I’m going to have my own cut/grind workshop of my own!). After many unsuccessful persuasion with the shop owner, the researcher in me decided to write to all composite panel manufacturers to ask for samples stating the purpose of usage.

I think I got lucky, Aludecor Responded.

The rest of the story became a trial report. The trial report is only the tip of the Iceberg of successful attempts, a whole glacier of

“not ok “attempts was hidden.

3.How different does the approach towards painting change whenever you choose a non- traditional medium for paint?

The composite panel that would be marketed for art purposes should behave like traditional canvases. The artist should not be expected to follow a different approach to do his/her artwork. Already he is dealing with a whole lot of technicality involved in making the art. We can’t add up any more load over the artist.

Three minimum factors are required to make any form of art, is the surface to paint, brushes or any tools and paint.

All these three factors have been established for many years. A change in one

factor cannot have an effect on the other two. If there is, like for example you propose a new painting surface, that is not compatible with already established brushes and paint, then the very idea is very unlikely to become hit or otherwise become established in the market. Also, each factor is equally expensive. A whole set of consumables would already have stocked up with artists. An artist makes a painting, and either sells it to a customer or to a gallery, whereas the brushes the artist uses stay with him for a long time or in rare cases – forever, the paint stays with the artist as long as it is consumed. Hence, the composite panel should be compatible with the brushes and the paint.

4. What kind of paint did you use for your work?

Over composite panels, I

used Oil, Acrylic and mixed Media.

5. How was the experience of painting on Composite Panels?

Oh! You will “have to paint” to understand the experience. Just as there is no words to explain the motherhood or when you are in love or you achieve something tremendous. Composite panels must be a dream of many artists. Soft and clean surface of composite panels and buttery paint running over them in different shapes…I would define it as an experiential poem.

Let us also deep dive in the technicality of preparing the cotton canvas, based on the requirement of the painting subject the canvas needed to be prepped with 5 to 9 layers of gesso application and sanding off. The layers might get reduced upon usage of linen. With composite panels, 2-3 layers of gesso are good to go for all paintings. And the painting remains resistant to moisture, degradation and stays sturdy. In the interior condition, the painting is going to stay forever. What more is needed, as I said composite panels are “The dream” to many artists – A painting surface that stays forever, unaffected and intact.
