I love being a mom. From the moment I held my two children, I was in love! You never think about how time flies until your babies grow up and move out, flying on their own, doing great things for the community. Both of my children are doing wonderful in their career choices. My son, Michael, is in IT, living in Dallas, and my daughter, Jaclyn, is in Texas State Trooper academy in Austin. They both are very smart, creative and good looking kids – at least they will always be kids to me. Throughout the years, Mike and I have had other “kids” come in and out of our lives. Some have lived with us, others have just come over with our kids to be a part of dinners, weekends or beach trips. We even did murder mystery parties with a group of teenagers on a regular basis. (Try it, you will love it!) We thoroughly enjoyed having all of the excitement and fun throughout the years, and sometimes, I miss it. I have heard from so many whose children are leaving to go to college how they will be lost without their kids. I was definitely one of those people! Jaclyn was the last one out of the house, and when she left, there was a big change in my life. I adjusted eventually to having just Mike to take care of – and the dogs, of course!

08 ALT Magazine | May 2019

Life is all about adjustments. Learning from your parents, teaching your children, taking chances. Now life is quiet other than the occasional bark of our babies, however, the memories still remain. Pamula Pierce, daughter of Charles Pierce, is following in his footsteps and bringing back memories from my teenage years. The Legend of Boggy Creek at that time scared me to death! I was living in Alabama at the time and now that I am close to Arkansas, I cannot wait to see the remastered version, coming to the Perot on June 15th. So many memories will come flooding back – even from just watching the trailer! You don’t want to miss it! (And yes, I probably won’t sleep for weeks afterward!) If you are looking for a great Mother’s Day present, tickets to the Legend of Boggy Creek would be a fabulous choice! Take a trip down memory lane with your mom while you are at it. It’s more fun to talk about all the things you did in the past than it is to sit around watching television or your iPhone. Or get out and create some new memories. Your mom will appreciate that more than you know. I wish you all the very best Mother’s Day. May God bless you and yours…

45 After a Long

Years, Boggy Creek is Back!

010 ALT Magazine | May 2019

WORDS: Anne Granado PHOTOS BY: ©2018 PAMULA PIERCE PRODUCTIONS The man, the myth, the legend. Charles B. Pierce is best known in this area for his cult classic films Town that Dreaded Sundown, Bootleggers, and The Legend of Boggy Creek, and his daughter, Pamula Pierce Barcelou, is honoring his legacy by bringing The Legend of Boggy Creek back to the big screen this summer. The film has spent the last year being restored and remastered into 4K/Bluray at The George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, and it will premiere on June 14th, and again on June 16th, in celebration of Charles B. Pierce Day, at the Perot Theatre in Texarkana, where it premiered back in 1972. “I saw the film on the big screen for the first time in 45 years, at the beginning of the restoration process and cried!” Pam says. Though many people judge the film for it's “scare-ability,” Pam is hoping that the restoration will highlight the true talent behind the technical side of the film. This will be the first authorized release of the film since 1975, and it restores the original wide-angle Techniscope film format. The bootleg prints were so-called “pan and scans,” removing the best elements of the movie, and what initially endeared it to audiences: the sweeping cinematography and unique sound. The movie pioneered what was called ‘poly-dimensional’ sound. Also, in 1972, the critics acclaimed the beautiful picture, it’s eerie soundtrack, and mused about Jaime MendozaNaza’s folksy musical score. “To see it again on the big-screen, as it was made to be seen, is amazing, and the documentary format ‘holds up’ today, as Newsweek Magazine

recently cited it as ‘the best Bigfoot film ever made!’” Pam says. “We put together a 3-minute highlight clip, and I took it with me to the Texas Bigfoot Conference last October and showed it on a larger screen. Afterwards, several people remarked that it was like The Wizard of Oz when it goes from black and white, to color, and many told me they had chill bumps!” Not only does Pam hope to highlight the skill that her father used to create the film, she hopes the restoration illuminates the legacy of her father who passed away in 2010. For her, he was much more than the filmmaker and writer. He was a giant in her childhood--a man of many talents and passions. He inspired her and her family, as well as many others who knew him or watched his films. “He was bigger than life and more than a dad,” Pam says. “I always knew my dad was in the public eye, and I was very used to people approaching him for a handshake, a photo, or an autograph in public. It’s a little strange growing up in the public’s eye, but in a good way!” Charles B. Pierce was born in 1938 in Hammond, Indiana. His family moved to Hampton, Arkansas, when he was young, and he grew up shooting 8mm movies in his backyard. Later, he became a cartoonist, and in the mid1960s, he became the art director for KTAL-TV in Shreveport, Louisiana. “My father was very gregarious. In high school, he was voted Most Talented, Most Likely to Succeed, and Wittiest,” Pam says. “He was a maverick, hardworking, dedicated, driven. He was type A, and the funniest man

I’ve ever met. He was quick, talented, creative, and loved to entertain. He was so charismatic. People were always comfortable approaching my dad, and he loved his fans.” Charles met Pam’s mother, Florene Lyons Pierce, while living in Hampton. Florene’s father was a Baptist minister who preached in El Dorado, Arkansas, a short distance from Hampton. Florene and Charles were married for 17 years and had three children. Though the two divorced, Florene famously told Pam that her and Charles would be reunited in death. The two died six months apart, and Pam likes to imagine that they did find each other again. “It was great fun being his daughter, and I’ve always considered it a privilege,” Pam says. “I’ve always known I was blessed with the parents I was given; my parents were both great artists!” Charles became a weatherman and cartoonist for the network working at television stations in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas until 1969 when he moved to Texarkana. He started Pierce Advertising Agency. His biggest client was Ledwell and Sons Enterprises, the local firm that builds 18-wheel trailers and farm equipment. “Mr. Ledwell saw something in my dad. He was a hard worker, had lots of energy, and was very talented. He was always on the go,” Pam says. “He expected people to work hard, especially me! He would come in and never let us sleep late. It was a sin to be in bed past 7 a.m.” Charles developed commercials for Ledwell that played throughout the Southwestern United States. Many say the reputation he developed with those

commercials later helped him launch his film career. Also during this time, Charles played a character called Mayor Chuckles on The Laffalot Club, a local Arkansas children’s television show. “If you talk to older people and ask them about Mayor Chuckles, they have a lot of fond memories of the show and the character my father played,” Pam says. In the early 1970s, Charles decided to expand into film. “After several successes, my ever-ambitious dad convinced one of his clients, Mr. Ledwell, to finance a ‘small regional film’ for $35,000. He’d recently met screenwriter, Earl E. Smith, visiting relatives in town for the holidays, and they were writing an adventure script together, Bright River, to be filmed in the Ozarks on the Buffalo,” Pam says. “On a pre-production trip to Los Angeles, driving up Sunset Blvd, they noticed some teenage boys wearing ‘Fouke Monster’ T-shirts walking down the sidewalk, and swerved over to talk to them. By the time they were getting back into the car, Dad said to Earl, ‘We’re making the wrong movie; let’s

The film never seemed scary to Pam because she saw it unfold, behindthe-scenes. Charles has said he did not necessarily believe in the legend, but he was fascinated with the stories about the Fouke monster. The film was shot at locations in Fouke, Texarkana, and Shreveport, with a 35 mm camera that Charles borrowed from Gordon Eastman. It was filmed in a faux documentary style and included interviews with Fouke residents mixed with dramatizations of their encounters with the creature. Like Charles, the film’s financial backers and many of the actors had never been involved in a film before. Charles cast the actors by approaching customers at a local gas station whenever he saw somebody that looked like they fit one of the parts. He hired high school students as crew members who helped load and move equipment. For the creature itself, he limited the sightings to shadowy figures because he felt the film would be more frightening if the creature was left to the viewer’s imagination. Pierce also sang the theme song featured in the film.“I remember first hearing about the creature from newspaper reports; all the kids were talking about it at school! Shortly after, I overheard my dad telling Mom about this movie he was going to make,” Pam says. “It was all very exciting! He began filming his opus using actual witnesses and his sheer ingenuity to get it done. He did so many of the jobs himself, he changed his name on some of the credits, so as not to look like he did everything himself!”

John Ball worked for Charles to design sets for Town that Dreaded Sundown and The Legend of Boggy Creek. John Ball’s son, Aaron, was Baby Ford in Town that Dreaded Sundown, and he will be at meet in greets in June. He’s an opera singer now. John Ball went on to Hallmark to start the popular, Shoebox Greetings. “The work that John and my dad did was remarkable,” Pam says. “They came up with so much on such a low budget.” Charles even used his family members in the film. Pam remembers that she was in the third grade at Vera Kilpatrick Elementary when she was picked up early from school and taken to the Ledwell farm outside of town, where Charles shot the ‘Bessie Smith’ beanfield scene, with her real mother playing Bessie Smith. “I am the first child through the door, yelling for my ‘Grandpa! Grandpa!’” Pam says. Three days into production, the team ran out of money, spent mostly on the wide-angle Techniscope film and had to go back to Mr. Ledwell again to finish production. When the film was finished, Charles loaded the reel into the back of his car and drove to California. He and Earl convinced the Burbank, California post-production house, owned by the composer, (and former Disney employee), Jaime Mendoza-Nava, to advance costs for the independent film. The Legend of Boggy Creek broke box records almost everywhere it played! For many years, it held the highest return on investment (ROI) in film history, until the Blair Witch Project,

which The Legend of Boggy Creek directly inspired,” Pam says. “The film also held the all-important concession stand records for a long time; we figure it was kids jumping out of their seats, spilling their popcorn and drinks, and parents having to buying more!” When the film was finished, Charles wanted to debut it in Texarkana even though he had a hard time finding a distributor. The Perot Theatre, called The Paramount at the time, was closed due to decline and disrepair. “Dad finally convinced them to open their doors, and gathered all his family and friends together to help in cleaning the theater for the premier,” Pam says. “The floors were so dirty from spilled sodas long-ago that our shoes would stick to the ground! We swept, mopped, and waxed the theatre floors, and Dad asked everyone that could, to send flowers for the premiere.”

long lines of people that snaked down the street, around the corner, and up the block again! When the film first opened, people carried sack lunches, and camped-out in line, waiting to buy their tickets to the next show! The first three weeks, the film grossed $55,ooo! (Adjusted for inflation today, that would be about $330,000.) The Legend of Boggy Creek opened Hollywood’s door for my dad and is a title that still invokes magic today!” Following the The Legend of Boggy

The film had a huge impact on the Pierce family. Eventually, Charles entered into a distribution deal with Joy N. Houck, owner of the independent distribution company Howco, who paid Charles and Mr. Ledwell 1.3 million each for a 50% distribution interest in the film. “Our lives changed overnight; everything changed after The Legend of Boggy Creek!” Pam says. “It was a huge sensation, and it made my dad a very rich man. He was thrilled, giddy. We would get in his car and drive past the

Eastwood, who liked the story and helped Pierce develop it into Sudden Impact. “My father wrote the famous line, ‘Go ahead and make my day,’” Pam says. “I never got tired of seeing what new thing my dad did next.”

Creek, Charles continued to make inexpensive regional films set in the southern United States. When he finished one film, he would immediately start the next, never content to rest. The movie he made after The Legend of Boggy Creek was Bootleggers, featuring Slim Pickens and the first major performance of Jaclyn Smith, who went on to play Kelly Garrett in the television series Charlie’s Angels. Other trademark films were Winterhawk and Winds of Autumn, both co-written with his The Legend of Boggy Creek partner, Earl E. Smith. In 1976, he directed and produced Town that Dreaded Sundown, the cult classic about an unidentified serial killer who killed five people in Texarkana in 1946. Charles appeared in The Town That Dreaded Sundown as police Patrolman A.C. “Spark Plug” Benson. The name “Spark Plug” was a real-life nickname given to the director due to his energy. “He inspired loyalty,” Pam says. “People worked for him over and over, and while he was easy to greet and appeared easy-going, he had total control over his sets. He was most in his element while on a film set. It was amazing to see!” In the 1980s, to further his career as a filmmaker, Charles moved to Carmel, California, where he met and befriended actor Clint Eastwood. Pierce shared an idea he had developed with 014 ALT Magazine | May 2019

Through her father’s career, Pam remained close to her father, learning from him and working on sets. “I was always with him in the Coach bus between takes after he’d yell ‘Cut!’” Pam says. “I usually arrived and left the set with him. I enjoyed a very close relationship with my dad, up until he grew sick with Alzheimer’s. I was firstborn, and had all the privileges, and pitfalls that position holds. He was very protective of me as his daughter, but also generous, even indulgent, sometimes.” As a little girl, Pam wanted to be an artist and would make a pallet under his drawing board when he worked, would tidy-up around his office, and even pretend she was the secretary of his advertising agency. Before Charles ever made a movie, and hit it big, he asked Pam if she would run his business for him one day. “He wrote me a check for $1,000,000, as an advance. By the time it was good, I’d long-lost the check, but it’s burned into my memory, and it became part of our family lore,” Pam says. “I lived and worked with him until I started a family of my own. So, it feels right; like it was always meant to be! I am also the Administratrix of the Charles B. Pierce Estate.” Though Charles was use to the traveling of the business, Pam says he was very protective of his family while they were growing up. “He bought us go-carts, motorcycles, arcade games, and a pool so that we would stay home and invite friends there instead of going out, so that he didn’t have to worry about where his kids were,” Pam says. “He was in a hard business with a lot of strange characters, and he knew I loved strange characters. One time I brought the band, The Cars, home, and he almost had a heart attack. I was the oldest, and I probably pushed his

buttons more than most, but I never really got into too much trouble. I just did things like bring the band home and used his washing machine to dye T-shirts!” Pam wanted to be an actress as a young woman; however, even though she had the film credits to qualify for SAG, her dad wouldn’t sign the necessary papers. “He did not want me to be actress, but this project, bringing The Legend of Boggy Creek back to the fans, would make him happy,” Pam says. “I always questioned my position as eldest daughter and wonder why I was placed there until recently when I felt God show me that I am a witness. I’m to testify to the amazing things that I’ve seen and the things that God can do. God has led me 100% directing my path on this journey.” Pam married a New Yorker, and after living in California for several years, moved to New England. Pam and her husband, David Barcelou, have five children together: Sloane Barcelou, Chloe Barcelou, Cole Barcelou, Olivia Barcelou and Sophia Barcelou. Their oldest is almost 32, and the youngest is 13. “I’ve been a stay-at-home wife, and mom, and our children have all been homeschooled. Several are artists, in their own right,” Pam says. “Our oldest daughter, Chloe Barcelou is a stylist, production designer, and photographer; she is also the fashion editor for New Hampshire Magazine. She designed and built her own tiny home and has appeared on HGTV, AOL TV, Daily Mail, and many others. She recently finished her first studio production for Universal Pictures, working as Production Designer to create the North Pole for Barbara Eden, as Mrs. Claus, and starring Denise Richards. Olivia, our fourth child, is 17, and already making short films, scriptwriting,

the

Legend of

Boggy Creek editing, and acting, and just recently snagged her first lead role in the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead with a local young artists theater company she belongs to.” While raising her own family and instilling in them the values of artistic expression and hard work, Pam began to think more about The Legend of Boggy Creek and her father’s legacy. In 2008, Charles was honored at the Little Rock Film Festival, where festival producers screened a retrospective of his films and presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Pam attended the festival, but her father, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s, did not recognize her. “It robs them of their memories; it’s a cruel disease,” Pam says. “When I attended, he thought that I was my mother, Florene. He put his hands on my face and said, ‘Is it you? Did you really come? Did you really come to see me?’” Also that year, the festival’s best film award was renamed in his honor to the Charles B. Pierce Award for Best Film Made in Arkansas. In October 2009, the Arkansas Arts Council honored Pierce with the Judges’ Special Recognition Award at the Governor’s

Arts Awards ceremony in Hot Springs. Pierce died on March 5, 2010. He was 71. Pierce directed 13 films over the span of 26 years and was credited with breaking new ground for other independent filmmakers. Because of this important legacy, Pam decided she wanted to see about releasing The Legend of Boggy Creek. “My husband is an inventor, holding many US patents, so I was familiar with intellectual property rights, and our dealings with them. Patents and copyrights are very different types of intellectual property though, so I needed an attorney that specializes in entertainment intellectual property law. It just so happens, Ken Burns, the documentary filmmaker lives not far away from me now, and I was able to reach out to him; I’m so honored, we now share the same attorneys!” Pam says. “We’re all huge Ken Burns fans, especially my dad. To finally see my name on the Copyright Certificate has given me a sense of accomplishment I’ve never felt before, and I’ve achieved something my dad never did: I own and control The Legend of Boggy Creek and Bootleggers! It was the best feeling in the world, knowing I finally had the fullyrestored pristineprint nearly

‘in the can,’ as my dad would say. It had been a long three years, and looking back, it seems like everything I’ve ever done in life, prepared me for today, and this project!” June 16th is Charles B. Pierce Day in Texarkana, so Pam plans to premiere the film again that weekend with showings scheduled throughout. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or at The Perot ticket office. Pam is also planning a Bluray/UHD home release later in the year. She has been successful in halting most of the bootleg sales, so she hopes to replace those outlets with authorized, restored/ remastered units soon. “I’m following my dad’s BIG footsteps, and I will roll out as he did initially: The Perot, The Strand in Shreveport, El Doraldo, now MAD-Murphy Arts District, and The Joy Theatre on Canal Street, New Orleans, the landmark theatre of the film’s original distributor, Joy Houck,” Pam says. “I hope the entire town joins me June 16th in celebrating our unique bond! Pam says that she still has a lot of work ahead. She will be booking shows and appearing for ‘meet ‘n greets’ to talk about her dad, sign autographs, and take photos with fans. Lyle Blackburn and others will be joining her, including several of the original ‘actors’ from The

ALT-Mag.com | May 2019 015

Legend of Boggy Creek, most notably, Travis Crabtree. Her biggest hope is to create the same excitement and buzz in the community as the film originally generated, so that it might, once again, “grow legs,” and attract a distributor that will introduce The Legend of Boggy Creek to fans again, old and new. “It would be such fun to see it with Japanese subtitles,” Pam says. “I also hope to re-introduce the wonderful art of Ralph McQuarrie, who created the masterpiece oil-on-canvas painting the poster is based on. Three years later, in 1975, McQuarrie was hired by George Lucas, as the conceptual artist for the Star Wars trilogy, and creator of Chewbacca, R2D2, C3PO, Darth Vader, and the Storm Troopers. The Fouke Monster and Chewbacca are said to be a sort of step-brothers to one another!” Pam foresees an entire line of merchandise, including a collectable toy figure in-theworks, posters, shirts/clothing, hats, party/craft supplies, hunting/sporting apparel, trading cards, graphic novels, and more. “I’ve long envisioned fans enjoying a Boggy Creek beer with that fabulous label!” Pam says. “There has even been talks about a re-make with another blockbuster producer/director! A lot is riding on Texarkana to show Hollywood that people still love our legend! I hope we can all celebrate Charles B. Pierce’s memory, and how much good he brought about through his hard work and creative spirit.” For this dream to come true, Pam says there are a lot of people to thank and celebrate as well. “I’d have to thank Mr. Stephen Ledwell, Kyle Alvet at The George Eastman Museum, my dad’s many fans, including Lyle Blackburn and Michael Logan,” Pam says. “And of course I’m thankful to my family because I can’t do it all, and my kids and 016 ALT Magazine | May 2019

husband have eaten a lot of take-out and inhaled a lot of dust!” On June 14th, when The Legend of Boggy Creek appears once again on the big screen where it was first debuted in Texarkana, Pam knows that it will honor her father and what he has meant to so many people. “The Legend of Boggy Creek was almost lost forever, and has now been saved for future generations of fans to enjoy; it’s original beauty and mystic has been restored. I think that would make my parents happiest of all, and it would honor

them most. I do hope to do more and establish a scholarship at some point, if we are successful. I also hope to open archives in the near future. My father has 10 scripts that have never been released. I have so many irons in the fire at the moment; we’ll see what pans out!” Pam says. “Sometimes I shake my head. It all seems like a wonderful dream where I’m once again in the warmth and glow of the Fouke Monster, and everything is right with the world. I hope the legend lives on forever!

We had been friends on social media for a while and then Michael eventually reached out to me. He came up to Little Rock while I was in my senior year of dental hygiene school and we went on our first date. We both knew then that we wanted to be a part of each other’s life for a very long time. We dated for a year and then he proposed December 13, 2018, at Santa Land in Tyler, TX.

Jonny and Lori

Harris

Jonny and I met in the summer of 2016. I had just moved from Texarkana to Dallas and applied for a coaching job with ASI Gymnastics. He was part of the interview team that approved my hire. We soon became the best of friends, and then our friendship began to grow. Before I knew it, he became the best part of my day - every day. Although we are complete opposites, we had a wonderful way of bringing out the best in each other. So falling in love was easy and very clearly part of God’s plan. In February of last year, I had planned a huge surprise party for his birthday, but I ended up being the one who was surprised. He had known what I was up to the entire time and used the party as an opportunity to propose. He secretly had invited my family and friends from home. As I watched them come out of hiding, I turned around to find Jonny down on one knee. It was a wonderful surprise, and I said yes! After attending a bridal fair in Hot Springs, I knew we had found our place to be married. We loved the beautiful historic charm of downtown and the unique venues. Our wedding took place in a gorgeous Baptist church built in 1932. Our reception was held at a renovated 1920’s building that originally housed one of the first automobile companies. “Oldfashioned” had become the unofficial theme of our wedding. We even had music and photo props from all the past decades. It was so fun and became one of my most favorite parts. Our wedding was a beautiful representation of us and the perfect way to begin our life together as one. 022 ALT Magazine | May 2019

Shawn and Ruth Ann

Irwin December 15, 2019

How We Met: It’s hard to pin point exactly when we met, we have been running in the same circle of friends for years. I had always thought he was cute but didn’t give us dating a true thought. We had dated other people and never seemed to be in the same phase of life. Our lives lined up in 2016 when he and I were both single and I found myself coming up with a lot of excuses to be over at his house to hang out with friends. He was drawn to my sassy personality and I loved his fun but calming presence. We finally went on our first date October 1, 2016. We went to a Cajun Seafood restaurant called Go Go Gumbo. He knew I loved seafood and had heard really good things about it so we gave it a try. The food was so good that we spent more time talking about how good the food was than the actual date itself. Over our 2 years of dating we have learned how to support each other through difficult jobs, job changes, stressful graduate school programs and long distance. We are complete opposites but in all the right ways and works well for us. The Proposal: I had planned a girls’ night to spend time with my best friends before leaving to South Carolina on a clinical rotation. We planned to meet at restaurant on the Denton Downtown Square but on my way there I was told the restaurant was packed and we should go somewhere else. So I was told to meet them at the Historic Courthouse in the middle of the downtown square so we could pick another restaurant. When arriving to the courthouse, Shawn surprised me at the front doors and brought me inside. He walked me to the very top with a beautiful view of all of Denton. He dropped on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was everything I have dreamed of for that moment. I had a long time dream of being proposed to at the top of the courthouse but never thought it would ever happen. Denton has a very special place in my heart, it’s where I met some of the best friends I have ever had; it is where I met Shawn and where we fell in love.

What Made It Special? Honoring our family was a big part of our special day, it was really important to us that we acknowledge the privilege we have had to come from a long line of strong marriages. My engagement ring is a combination of his great grandmother’s engagement ring band and my grandmother’s diamond. The ring I wore on my right hand was a promise ring given to my dad’s mother from my grandfather promising that when he came home from the Korean War he would marry her. My dress was a custom dress made with the lace from my mother’s wedding dress. Our cake table had pictures of our parents and grandparents on their wedding day, as well as a shadow box with a handkerchief that his great grandmother had on her wedding day.

Charles and Glorious

Melton February 14, 2019

Charles and I first met in 1986, in West Covina California. Our families were very good friends for many years. We both moved away from California, but kept in touch with one another. Our love story started on September 2, 2017, at the wedding of his daughter. Our eyes were opened for the first time in a romantic sense. Charles living in Texas and I in Georgia, we saw one another once a month, either in Texas or Georgia. It was on Charles’ second visit to Georgia that I hosted a dinner for him. He met my family, friends, and senior deacons from my church. Charles said the dinner sealed the deal. On one of our visits to California, on April 7, 2018, Charles proposed and I said yes.

Duncan and Shelby

Robbins

•Duncan and I met “officially” through a dating site in January 2017, but I knew who he was. We went to the same elementary school and he grew up playing baseball with several people I knew, at the same ball field my brother played. We initially hit it off over our mutual love of sports, specifically the Arkansas Razorbacks and the Boston Red Sox. Duncan works a lot of hours and several days in a row, so it took a few weeks for us to get to go on a date. Our first date was to Osaka and we chatted the entire time we were there. There was never an awkward feeling; it felt incredibly comfortable to be in each other’s presence. After dinner, he asked me if I wanted to go bowling or night fishing at Wright Patman Spillway. I chose fishing because I already knew how much Duncan enjoyed fishing and I wanted to win some points. (Although, I can’t sit still long enough to tag along on many fishing trips these days.) But I had the best time just sitting there talking, laughing, and getting to know each other better. I never stopped feeling that sense of comfort. I went home that first night and told my mom that I was pretty certain I had found the one God wanted me to walk through life with. Days went on and we spent as much time together as possible. There were very few days over the next several months that we weren’t together. We started discussing marriage pretty quickly, and though we had only been dating for a few months it felt natural. On the day that Duncan proposed, October 8, 2017, both of our families came over to my parent's house to eat Gumbo. At the time, my parents had a pond behind their house, so after our meal I settled in front of the TV to watch the Red Sox playoff game and Duncan headed to the pond. I just thought he was going fishing. A few minutes later he came back up to the house and asked me to look at this fish he had seen in the pond. (I confess, I actually told him I was busy watching the game!) Eventually, he convinced me and I walked down to the dock with him. He had me sit in a chair at the dock and left. I sat there and chatted with his mom, who was close by, and he came back a few minutes later with a bouquet of roses. Although we had talked so much about marriage in the past I was still completely shocked when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was shaking too much to even stand up from my seat. Of course I said yes. I loved that he planned the entire afternoon. I loved that our families were there and that our engagement took place right in my mom and dad’s backyard. It was the most beautiful day! (Fun fact- Our love of the Boston Redsox brought us together, so picking a place to honeymoon was a no brainer. We went to Boston to watch three games at Fenway Park. Now, we even have a goldendoodle named Boston!) 030 ALT Magazine | May 2019

What Made It Special? Our wedding day was incredible, but one of my favorite parts of the entire process was learning the story of my engagement ring. Duncan designed the ring at Micah’s Jewelers using diamonds passed down from both of our families. I also loved that I was able to get married at Garrison Gardens, because I fell in love with the venue when my brother and sister-in-law were married there six years earlier.

UNIFORMS

Uniforms Plus is celebrating 25 years in business this month! Suzanne Duck, owner, began the business on March 28, 1994. According to Suzanne, when she first began, the business was primarily white uniforms, which was one of the reasons she opened it. “The pediatric nurses and ICU nurses had begun to wear prints and colors beside whites, the other two shops in town only sold white uniforms,” says Suzanne. “I felt that there was a need for what was going to become the trend.” In addition, Suzanne had been diagnosed with MS, which was thankfully incorrect, but she needed to find a way to support herself and children as a single mom, and this was it.

compression socks, which are not just for nurses but anyone who stands on their feet a lot, scissors, hemostats, pulse oximeter, nursing bags, name badge holder, sleeves, lab coats and assorted gifts.

Throughout the years, the styles have changed from being the most basic styles, such as a basic v-neck pullover shirt and elastic waist pant, to some of the most fashion forward fabrics and styles that are similar to what you would see in Dillards. The biggest current trends are going back to 100% polyester blend fabrics that are much more user friendly (no fade, no iron, no shrinkage,) which makes them last and look good longer. Suzanne explains, “I feel part of the trend of more fashion was so that nurses could leave work and go out to eat, go to their children’s activities, or go to church and not feel like they had to change clothes.”

To be successful in any business, Suzanne shares that you should be prepared to take at least five years to be profitable, know your customers’ needs, know that you can’t please everyone, and that you will not always have what someone wants in stock. You should realize that other people can sell the same or similar products that you do and the biggest difference that will set you apart is customer service. You have to be visible to your customer.

Today, Uniforms Plus sells medical uniforms for all types of healthcare workers -- Nurses, LVN, CNA, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Physical Therapists. They also sell medical equipment, blood pressure cuffs, scissors,

038 ALT Magazine | May 2019

What makes Uniforms Plus different? Suzanne feels that because she was a nurse for 34 years, she knows what nurses truly need and what will work for them. All new styles are not functional and at the end of the day, we need clothing that is comfortable and works with us. The biggest challenge is to continue to change and stay current with trends as they occur.

Uniforms Plus’ mission is “our customers are the heart of our business.” According to Suzanne, they strive to be sure their customers are satisfied and that is what has allowed them to be successful. Visit Uniforms Plus this month as they celebrate 25 years in business!

Let Us

Come

To You.

by Dr. Lisa Myers, Director of BAAS Programs Texas A&M University - Texarkana

It’s hard to leave home. Whether you’re a high school graduate going off to college or an adult making the change to a more promising job, leaving a place you know to go to a place you do not know is one of life’s most challenging experiences. Change, no matter who you are, is something few of us welcome when it comes knocking on our door. I’ll let you in on a little secret: adults in college are no exception. We don’t like change either and will do all manner of creative adjustment to avoid it. In fact, sometimes we make life decisions based on the degree of change required. If there’s too much change, we will probably try to find another road to reach the goal we’re seeking. Case and point: earlier in the semester, a woman came to my office to discuss transferring to A&M-Texarkana after she completed her associate degree at Texarkana College. She was interested in the Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences (BAAS) program, but she did not start 048 ALT Magazine | May 2019

the conversation asking about the specifics of the program. She started the conversation with a confession. You’re probably not going to believe this, but this is my third time to the campus. I came last year, two different times. Both times, I sat in my car in the parking lot and talked myself out of coming in to see you. This time, I knew this was the only path forward, so here I am. What the woman did not know was that I hear that same story – give or take a trip or two to the campus – ALL THE TIME. Men, women, those who come from professional fields, and those who are interested in pursuing brand new careers report the same experience time and again. Why? Because it is hard to leave home and go somewhere new, especially when the new place will require significant change in how you do life.

For students transferring from community colleges, it may feel like you’re leaving the campus just as you’re starting to feel at home. Going to a new school will require navigating a new application process, adjusting to higher tuition rates and fees, deciphering new course classifications, getting to know new advisors and professors, learning new course delivery methods, mastering new standards of performance, and those are just the things you can think of off the top of your head. Far too often, the status quo wins out, and another student leaves the parking lot with the dream of earning a bachelor’s degree just out of reach - again. Starting in fall 2019, we hope to make this transition from your community college to A&M-Texarkana a little easier. We’ll be teaching the introductory course to the BAAS program on the campuses many of you already call home – Texarkana College and Northeast Texas Community College. Of course, this won’t remove all the change that comes with big decisions in life, but you’ll be able to manage the big changes

in a familiar environment in which you’ve already been successful. The course we’ll be teaching is AAS 305: The Adult Learner and SelfDevelopment. We will meet on the community college campus every other Tuesday evening, and off-weeks will be covered online. This delivery method will allow you to slowly acclimate to A&M-Texarkana’s online learning system (Blackboard). In addition, the face-toface interaction will help build important relational bonds that will support you throughout the journey to your degree. We’re very excited about this extended partnership with Texarkana College and Northeast Texas Community College. We’ll see you on campus in the fall!

Kenzie and Sonja

Braden and Dana

Erin and Kerry

When I think of words that describe my mom, I think of funny, loving, and caring! We always laugh a lot when we are together. Some things my mom always tells me is to enjoy life, “chillax”, never forget to “stop and smell the roses”, be grateful and thankful, and to always rely on God and my faith in everything I do. If my mom was a character in a TV show, she would be Amy B. Duncan from Good Luck Charlie. I believe my mom could become famous for her amazing personality and humor. We are the same when it comes to making crazy faces. We are different in our personalities; she is more outgoing and I am more shy. She has taught me to always do my best, work hard, to persevere through hard times or difficulties, and to be kind. She will relax by reading books, preferably outside, in a hammock enjoying the life around her. If I could give my mom anything in the world, I would give her a promise that I will always be by her side.

Funny, weird, and loud is how I would describe my mother. Her hosting big parties is the coolest thing she does! My mom always tells me to remember who you are and what you are here for. If my mom were a character in a book, movie, or TV show, she would be Principal Dwight from Middle School: The Worst Years of my Life. She would become famous by singing or cooking! We watch movies together a lot. We are the same because we like the same music and we are different because she likes shopping and I do not. My mother has taught me that you have to work for what you want. She relaxes by sitting on the couch & watching TV, and if I could give her anything in the world, I would give her a Mercedes.

World's Best Mother are three words that I would use to describe my mother. My mom and I do pretty much everything together. She tells me so many things that are important that I can not name one specific thing. If she was a character in a book, movie, or TV show, she would be Alice Kramden from The Honeymooners. Her cooking would make her famous! We both like same music. I like to be away from home, she likes to stay at home. The most important thing I believe my mom has taught me is patience. She relaxes with quite time. If I could give her anything in the world, it would be life... but she already has that!

Three words that would describe my mother are loyal, kind, and sassy. My mom and I enjoy theatre together all the time. Two things that she has always told me are, "Suck it up Buttercup," and "I don't do well with whine." If she was a character in a movie, she would be Honey (Frozone's wife) from The Incrediables. If my mom were to become famous, it would be from being a mom of a movie star! One of the coolest things my mom does is host random parties for my friends and I. Even though we are both sassy, she is more sporty and I am more artsy. "Treat others the way you want to be treated" is something my mom has taught me to live by. She relaxes by reading a book, which is actually another way we are different. If I could give her anything in the world, we would travel to the French countryside to visit her favorite Chateau that she follows on Instagram.

Describing my mom in three words would be selfless, beautiful, and strong. My mom and I do pretty much everything, from trips to Disney World to riding horses through the Palo Duro Caynon. Something that my mom always says to me is “Raichel Ann"! If my mom were a character from a book, she would be Lynne Cox’s mom from the book Swiming to Antarctica. I say this because Lynne’s mom supports her through her struggles and passion for swimming, like my mom supports me in my struggles and passions. If my mom became famous, it would be for her epic ways of planning family trips, or writing a travel blog. We both are known as honest people, although I do feel that she has a little more backbone than me. The most important thing my mom has taught me is grace. She has taught me this through many situations that have hurt her and made her want to scream, but she kept her head high and a smile on her face. My mom relaxes by taking a nice hot bath and reading a good book. If I could give my mom anything in the world, I would give her everything she has done and given to me plus more.

My kind, loving, and amazing mother and I love shopping together and I just love talking to her about my problems. Something my mom always says to me is, "Jaden Louise, clean your room"! If my mom were a part of a TV show, she would be Topanga Lawrence and my dad would be Corey Matthews! My mom's sense of humor would make her famous. We both don't know how to cook well, but we are different because she is more "country" and I am more girly. An important lesson she taught me is to always be kind no matter what. She likes to sit on the dock at the pond to relax. If there was anything in the world I could give her, I would give her the world! Adopting me was the coolest thing she has ever done.

My mother is funny, gorgeous, and loving. One of the coolest things she has done was taking me to Branson, Missouri. She always tells me "I love you!" I would say my mom would be Super Woman if she was a part of a movie. My mom would probably be famous for modeling! We always exercise and go out to eat together. My mom and I look the same, we are both short, and we act the same. The only thing different about us is our hair color. The most important thing my mom has ever taught me was to stay out of drama and don’t care what others think about you. My mom relaxes by reading and walking. If I could give my mom anything in the world it would be a pair of Kate Spade earrings.

Beautiful, kind, and smart is how I would describe my wonderful mom. The coolest thing I think my mom has ever done was to jump out of a moving plane with a parachute. "First Impressions are EVERYTHING" is something my mom always says to me. My mom would be Nia Sioux Frazier's mom, Holly Frazier, from Dance Moms if she was in a TV show. We enjoy getting manicures and pedicures together. We are the same because we both love fashion! We are different because she is not a dancer. She taught me that respect is earned, not given. If I could give my mom anything, I would give her the gift of immortality because even though there is a Heaven, I never want her to leave me while I'm here on earth.

“Be a sweet, godly girl and love your family,” is the most important thing my beautiful, smart and athletic mom has taught me. I love that Mom is always telling me “you’re beautiful” and “I love you”. I am thankful that Mom is always taking me to school, gymnastics, cheer, basketball, and track. I also love that we go shopping together. Once, Mom took me and a friend to Hot Springs, Arkansas, for a spa day with food and shopping – coolest thing ever! Mom and I definitely have the same laugh, but our hair and eye color differ. I have blonde hair and green eyes, and Mom has brown hair and brown eyes. If Mom were to become famous for anything, she would be known as a famous maid for rich people and for putting funny animals made from towels on their beds! Mom often goes to bed when she needs to relax but I do wish I could give her the world! Instead, I would love to give her a Chocolate Diamond Necklace from Zales.

Our mama is observant, modern and our best mentor! We literally enjoy doing everything together, but our favorite is playing volleyball with her. She is always taking time out of her busy schedule to talk to us about anything on our minds. Mama is always telling us “I love you big” and asking CJ “are your bands on” (he has braces!). We believe she would be famous for her honesty and constantly volunteering her time for anyone that needs it. Her most important lessons taught to us: to be confident in everything you do, always be respectful, have good sportsmanship, even when your team is not winning, and to CJ, never mistreat a lady! If our mama was a character in a TV show, she would definitely be a coach on the TV show, The Voice, because she is so talented musically and gives awesome advice. Summer states, “Mama and I love to do the same things, we look alike, causing us to be confused as sisters, but we are different because she’s married to my dad. I am not married to my dad.” CJ loves that they are both spontaneous which makes last minute plans very fun. Their difference – “she’s only 5’5” and I am over 6’!” If we could give Mama anything in the world, it would be a KIA Telluride. It is her dream car! But we both know that all she wants from both of us are hugs and kisses. Finally, and most importantly, the coolest thing Mama has ever done – ADOPT US!

My mom is devoted, hardworking, and reliable. We love to sing our hearts out in the car with the music blasting. She is constantly reminding me that a lazy man does twice the work. Its hard to choose a fictional character because no one can really compare, but if I had to I would say Monica Geller is the closest. If she were to become famous, it would be because she got on Ellen after a video of her failing to do something went viral. My mom and I find it relaxing to just go for drives sometimes. We both enjoy making others laugh but we have a very different sense of humor. She has always taught me that not everything will be handed to me. My mom relaxes by reading. If I could give my mom anything, I would give her a couple plane tickets to Ireland.

My mom is protective, nice and loving. Of course, she is always saying, “Because I said so”, but most importantly she always says, “I love you”. I love that my mom and I hang out together, we both have a hard time taking a joke, and she is always teaching me important lessons like “always choose your friends wisely”. Riding the Slingshot in Panama City Beach, Florida, is probably the coolest thing my mom has ever done, but I do believe she would be most famous for her cooking! How are we different? She is clean, but I am messy! If my mom were to be a character in a sitcom, it would be Beverly Goldberg from The Goldbergs. Although I’m sure my mom never really relaxes, I find myself wanting to give her the world – which in her case, would be a hug!

Loving, caring, and forgiving are three words I think about when thinking about my mom. We watch movies together at home all the time. She always tells me to run hard. If my mom was someone in a movie she would be the mom in the movie Wonder because she loves us no matter what. She would become famous by inventing something. She always watches all my sporting events which makes her pretty cool. We are the same because we both have a really caring heart, and we are different because she can cook and I can not. The most important thing my mom has taught me is to be a forgiving person. My mom relaxes by simply just watching a movie. If I could give my mom anything in the world, it would be free plane tickets anywhere she wants to go, because I know she loves to travel and see all the beautiful places in the world.

Fun, loving, and beautiful are the three words I would use to describe my mother. We do pretty much everything together. She always tells me to treat people the way you want to be treated. She would be GI Jane from Rocky Balboa if she was a character in a movie. She would be famous for having the cleanest house in the world. We look the same in many ways, however, our personalities are different. She has continuously taught me to "be yourself". If I could give my mom anything in the world, It would be good health, peace, love and to be truly happy!

If I could give my mom anything in the world, I would write her a book on how much I appreciate her love and guidance. My gorgeous, generous, and smart mom and I love to go shopping, get manis and pedis, and go to the late movie on school holidays. She is always telling me, “don’t be afraid of trying new things because you are stronger than you think.” The most important thing my mom has taught me is to take life one day at a time because I frequently get overwhelmed with my daily assignments and tasks. She is literally the fairy godmother to my Cinderella. My mom and I are the same in the sense of our styles and interests. We can almost read each other’s minds. My mom and I differ in personality; my mom is very outgoing and I am much more reserved. The coolest thing my mom has ever done is taking us on an exhilarating adventure through the forest canopy. It was a three hour, very challenging, suspended obstacle course including zip lines! My mom enjoys relaxing by reading a good book in a hot bath, and I know she would be most famous for her yummy chicken spaghetti!

My kind, loving, and supportive mom is always telling me she loves me “no matter what”. We enjoy shopping together, and just talking about life. Even though we are both hard headed and have attitudes, we find joy in watching our favorite television shows together each week. Speaking of television shows, she could totally be Caroline in the Vampire Diaries because she is fierce and has love for everyone. The most important lesson my mom has ever taught me is to “never judge people before you get to know them”. I know Mom would be famous for her singing, and she enjoys sitting down and watching TV as a way to relax. If I could give my mom anything in the world, it would be THE WORLD, because that is exactly what she deserves.

My mom and I love to run, shop, and watch movies together. She is hard-working, caring and determined, and is always reminding me to work hard. The most important lesson she has taught me is to remember that “someone younger is watching, so be a role model”! If she were a character in a movie, it would be M’Lynn Eatenton from Steel Magnolias. The coolest thing my mom has ever done is to plan a trip to visit KU. I feel we are the same in the way we talk and act, but our differences definitely lie in our sense of humor and personality. Mom often relaxes by reading or watching the TV show, Criminal Minds. If I could give her anything in the world, it would be a stress-free job!

My mom is loyal, loving, and honest. We love being lazy, eating junk food, watching movies and talking together. She tells me that I am her "life saver", she "loves me", and to "get off the phone". My mom would be Cinderella if she was a character in a movie. She would be famous for always helping others. We both look alike, both love being silly, and both care tremendously for our friends and family, but we are different because our last names are not the same. She has taught me to be strong-willed, and not to worry about what others have to say or do towards me. She relaxes by listening to music. If I could give my mom anything in the world, it would be to see herself through my eyes.

We like to hang out all the time because we have random, silly moments when we are out doing things together or at home. Mom always says to me "I love you" and it never gets old. If my mom were a character in a book or movie, she would be Mama Odie from The Princess & the Frog. I think she would be famous for her amazing cooking. We are the same because we look a lot alike and we share the same Zodiac sign. One difference between us is that my mom really enjoys cooking and I really do not. My mother relaxes by having a good cup of hot tea and she enjoys listening to good music, especially Reggae, Spiritual, Motown, Prince, Old School R&B sounds, Classical, and Country. If I could give her anything in the world, I would give her immortality, so I could have her with me.

My mother is funny, intelligent, and beautiful. We like to garden, study, and drive around together. She always says "I love you", and though every parent says this, we say it every time, even if one of us are just leaving the room. If my mom were a character in a book, movie, or TV show, she would be any role Melissa McCarthy plays; they are both just too funny. I believe my mom could be a famous psychologist and TV personality like Dr.Phil. I think going back to college after years of being scared and going after her dreams is the coolest thing she has ever done. We are both very outspoken and opinionated when asked, however, in terms of difference, she likes hot sauce on almost everything and I do not. My mom taught me to always be yourself no matter what! She listens to classical music and reads her books to relax. I would like to give my mom a beach house in Florida that comes with a greenhouse for our plants!

Dine Out & Donate for Apraxia Who do you know that goes or has gone to speech therapy? Often, it’s easy to ‘see’ when someone is struggling with a disability but when the struggle is with speech, it’s often hidden. People tend to think there is something ‘wrong’ with the child when perhaps all they really need is a little more attention or patience. Share your voice and come out for dinner while raising support for APRAXIA AWARENESS. Apraxia is a neurological speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to clearly and correctly produce syllables and words. Can you imagine knowing what you want to say but not being able to get the words out? Enjoy an evening out knowing that a portion of your total will be donated to Apraxia Awareness. Proceeds will be used to pay for speech therapy and iPads.

STRINGER WEALTH MANAGEMENT RAYMOND JAMES FINANCIAL STRINGERWEALTHMANAGEMENT.NET

Wills and the Wayward Child Estate planning can help bring your black sheep back into the fold. On your terms.

Every family has a skeleton or two in the closet; a grandson with a history of substance abuse; a daughter who married someone careless with money; a ne’er-do-well brother with a string of petty crimes in his past. Maybe your family doesn’t have a skeleton, so much as a black sheep or a child who marches to a different drummer. Maybe it’s a child who struggles with mental illness, or one who simply doesn’t live up to the expectations of a successful family. You may disagree about politics, religion, values, work ethic – any number of things – but you’re still family, and that bond runs deep. These challenging family relationships make every day a balancing act, leaving you to find just the right mix of support and protection without enabling your loved one. It’s these most challenging relationships that make estate planning all the more, well, challenging.

As featured inWORTHWHILE, a quarterly periodical dedicated to serving the clients of Raymond James advisors and affiliated advisory firms. 062 ALT Magazine | May 2019

Difficult decisions

While you are alive, you can monitor your financial support to help recipients of your generosity develop a healthy relationship with money. After your death, however, your money no longer comes with loving guidance and good advice. So what choices do you have when you’re struggling with family dynamics and have some estate planning decisions to make?

1

Leave Them Nothing

Disinheriting someone is more common than you may think, and it’s not just among wealthy families who disapprove of a child’s lifestyle. Some families make the decision to disinherit a successful child in order to dedicate more assets to a disabled sibling or to balance out distributions if one child received more financial support during their lifetime. Those assumptions can prove risky though, as situations can and will change in ways you can’t foresee. Of course, you don’t always need a reason. If you don’t want to bequeath anything to anyone, you don’t have to. Many people choose to leave their assets to organizations outside the family. It’s your prerogative. But if you disinherit someone without an explanation or understanding, expect very real feelings of hurt and betrayal, which could enough for that person to make a claim against the estate when you’re no longer in the picture. If appropriate, explain your rationale in the will so there can be no claims of attorney drafting errors or other grounds to contest the will. Potential litigation is just one problem that may arise. It’s likely that a family feud will erupt, even if the discord doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. It’s just difficult to accept the truth that your family has cut you off. Can you imagine the awkward family dinners that could result when some siblings inherited and others didn’t? Disinheriting someone could sow resentment that may last generations. If you ultimately decide this is the path to take, re-evaluate that decision every so often. As mentioned before, situations change. Your loved one may be making strides toward a better life – and you may decide your support can help them stay on the right track.

2

Leave Them Something outright

Another option is to stipulate an outright gift for your “wild child,” perhaps something smaller than you would have in better circumstances, or make them the beneficiary of a small life insurance policy.

The amount may be hard to determine – somewhere between large enough to avoid resentment and small enough to alleviate some of the worry that the gift will be squandered or potentially cause harm. Your professional advisors can help you find that fine line using the specifics of your estate and other beneficiaries involved.

Finding harmony

Repairing relationships isn’t easy. It takes work from every side, if everyone is willing. But research suggests you can bridge the divide over time. Here are some tips. 1. Try, try again. While some conflicts may run too deep to resolve, many can be reconciled if you keep the door open, reach out with empathy time and again even if rebuffed, and get professional help, if needed. 2. Keep enough distance. Not to be contradictory, but sometimes, you both need space to cool off. Face-to-face interactions may be too emotionally fraught and counterproductive to healing. So texting or email may be the first olive branches, allowing the receiving party time to think before responding. 3. Adjust. Your adult children are just that, adults. They need independence. Some parents struggle with showing them the same respect as other adults, even when they’re making decisions you don’t agree with. You may not like their choices, but be honest with yourself about whether you should weigh in.

3 Trust In a Trust

When your heart wants to share your wealth with those you love, but your head knows that outright gifts might enable them rather than help, you may want to consider a trust. If you have a legitimate need for control – such as avoiding giving a drug user carte blanche access to substantial funds – a wellstructured trust may offer the flexibility you need to accomplish your estate planning goals without permanently disinheriting someone. Certain types of trusts allow you to nominate someone responsible enough to help your beneficiary manage their inheritance. There are costs involved to set up and maintain the trust, but that may seem a small price to pay for the comfort of knowing your loved one will get their inheritance under the right circumstances. Discretionary trusts, for example, leave the assets at the mercy of the trustee and your heir has no legal claim to any assets. But given the proper structure and a well-chosen trustee, the assets can be distributed with your intentions in mind. Incentive trusts, on the other hand, formalize those intentions and make any distributions contingent on your child achieving certain goals or mile stones, say successfully

completing rehab or holding a job for more than a year. The point is stipulations can be built in to the trust to encourage more responsible behavior. Trusts can also be structured to stagger distributions at intervals or certain ages to prevent the child in question from burning through their inheritance. The hope is that your heir will eventually learn how to manage money wisely. In the meantime, you can ask the trustee to make distributions on behalf of your beneficiary to cover certain health, education and living expenses. No matter which type of trust you select, it’s important to choose a trustee who will be objective and fair; a professional may be just the thing. Often, that makes it easier for all parties; relatives and siblings won’t get caught in the middle. Loving an imperfect person isn’t always easy, and estate planning for one comes with issues of its own. The good news is that comprehensive estate planning has many tools to help a loved one thrive even after you’re gone. While it may be difficult, it’s not impossible. And it won’t do to avoid the challenges altogether. Instead take the time to put in some careful thought and planning, with guidance from professional advisors, attorneys and accountants.

Celebrities have been known to have estate planning drama, too. Take a peek.

The sting. Pop singer Sting publicly declared he has every intention of spending his money and leaving nothing for his six children. The intention is really to help them become self-sufficient with a strong work ethic. Big money, big charity. Billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett plan to give away their wealth to causes they care about instead of their children. Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg followed suit saying, “If you want to do something for your children and show how much you love them, the single best thing – by far – is to support organizations that will create a better world for them and their children.” Those '70s kids. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis revealed they have no plans to create trusts for their children, but they will support a good business plan. The goal? To motivate their children to work hard. Fish Tales with Mike Brower Wet Clothes

Last month, I was fishing a BFL at Lake Hamilton in the thunder storms that raked the south. I hate fishing in wet clothes and always keep a spare, cheap rain suit top in the boat in case my normal one springs a leak. So, I’m out there in a driving rain first thing in the morning, when I realize my top has a leak. I think to myself “no big deal”, it’s four years old and I will just grab the spare out of the box, throw it on and get back to business. WRONG. It was then that I realized my “spare” top was not in the boat, not in my truck, but in my fly fishing vest at home in my closet. After some choice words and resigning myself to the fact I would be soaking wet in a few minutes, I went back to fishing and was soon both wet and cold. I still caught fish but was more or less miserable doing it. After weigh-in, I found one spot on my pants, about the size of a cup saucer, that was dry. The rest of me was soaking wet from top to bottom, all because of one leak in my rain suit top. I thought I was playing with fire this year with a four-year-old top, but thought I could get a couple of more tournaments out of it. WRONG again! The moral of this story is to be more observant and put things back where they belong when you are done with them. I hate wet clothes. Lesson learned, until the next time.

The new generation of emergency care.

Drug Take Back Initiative Operation Medicine Cabinet

The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is proud to partner with Texarkana Emergency Center in an effort to remove unused and out of date prescription medicines from your homes. •It is important to know that law enforcement is only interested in the removal of unused and/or outdated medications from the homes of our citizens. •It matters not whose name is on the prescription, by whom it was prescribed, where it was prescribed, or where you reside. •We stress that it makes no difference if you live in Texas or Arkansas. •We take back all medications, no questions asked. You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary. •We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers.

One box has been placed behind the Bi State Justice Building at 100 N. State Line Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas and another outside the Texarkana Emergency Center, 4646 Cowhorn Creek Rd., Texarkana, Texas. These boxes are regularly checked and the contents are immediately packaged for destruction. If you would like to personally drop your medications off to law enforcement, you can at the Miller County Sheriff ’s Office on East Street and Bi State Justice Building in Texarkana.
