The struggles of motherhood…
I always enjoy the month of May. Not just because the weather turns warm enough for me to enjoy being outside in the sun and pool but because we have so many incredible women who deserve to be recognized! This month, we do just that! The moms in this month’s issue have had their share of obstacles to overcome, but they have rocked at being great moms!
In my 45 years of motherhood, I have had my own struggles. From work, going back to school, being a good wife, and attempting to be a good mom, life’s issues can seem more than one can handle at times. Sometimes, it’s tough to even think about motherhood when your teenager is doing things you know they shouldn’t be, but nothing you say can make them understand that you know better.
I laugh at my grandchildren, who are learning that you reap what you sow! I have had my share of reaping from everything I did when I was younger. It’s their turn now! I have tried to teach my children right from wrong, but they must sometimes learn independently. They have to make their own mistakes. And sometimes, we have to cry with them when they don’t quite turn out like they were expecting.
I don’t know of any mom who truly loves their children and hasn’t cried because they knew their child was making a mistake. However, those same moms are there when the bubble bursts, and they fall back to earth. That’s what moms do. We catch them when they fall, prop them back up, and let them go again. It’s difficult, to say the least, to watch. But eventually, they learn and fly again.
I love my children – my son, Michael, who lives in Prosper, and my daughter, Jaclyn, who lives in Del Rio. They are two totally different people. Michael is a “tech nerd,” and Jaclyn is a Texas State Trooper. Who would have thought that of two children brought up together? Although we have struggled at times, they have become incredibly smart, kind, and thoughtful adults. They both love life and their families, and they both love their Mom. I am very blessed and fortunate indeed.
I hope you have a wonderful time with the warmer weather and honoring your Mom! Blessings to you and yours!

For many people, Mother’s Day is not easy, especially when facing fertility issues. Betty Bertrand and her husband were married 11 ½ years before their first child was born. “I just really had to give it to God and keep in mind that He had his own plans for me, and I needed to be patient,” Betty says. “I started receiving fertility treatments, and I was finally able to get pregnant and carry to full term. Then, on December 7, 1991, Mary Rachael Bertrand was born. It was scary, exciting, exhausting, but mostly wonderful. I am an RN and had worked in the hospital nurseries for years, but taking one home of my own was a totally different experience.”
Due to their struggles with fertility, Betty was older by the time she became a mom for the first time, but she did not let that stop her from enjoying every minute.
Betty Bertrand MOTHER
OF 4
“Motherhood has given me more patience than I thought I could have, and it has made my understanding of others better,” Betty says, “After Rachael, we were blessed with three additional great kids who have grown to be great adults: Jessie (Bertrand) Bias 30, soon to be 31; Alyssa (Bertrand) Jensen 29; and Jared Bertrand 23.”
When Betty and her husband decided what type of parents they wanted to be, they looked back at their upbringing and the important things they wanted to pass along to their children. This was one way they could stay connected to their families who lived far away. “My husband and I moved to Texas in December of 1985 from California and stayed. We had no family here, so we had to be our own support system,” Betty says. “There is nothing like raising children when
you don’t have someone to step in and help. It strengthened our marriage, and we worked together to help our family succeed.”
Unfortunately, Betty’s mother passed away when Rachael was only 9 months old. “My mother got to see her twice, but none of my other children met her. But I still remember some of the things she would say, and I have found myself saying them,” Betty says. “My mom had a big heart and took in all the ‘strays’ we brought in, and I have done the same. I have been ‘mom’ to more than I can name right here, but that is what being a mom is all about: when your children’s friends feel that your house is a safe place.”
Before they had children, Betty and her husband agreed that they would raise their children in church if they were lucky enough to have a
010 ALT Magazine | May 2024
family. “We wanted to teach them to depend on God. We taught them to pray and that if your life is right with God, everything else will fall in place,” Betty says. “We also taught our children right from wrong, how to behave properly in public, and the importance of treating others how you want to be treated. You raise them right and it does return to you greater.”
Betty says she raised her four children with the same core values, but each has their own personality. Their firstborn, Rachael, displays the typical oldest-child characteristics. “She has always acted like it was her job to keep the others in line. She always made sure her siblings, or anybody else, did what they were supposed to do,” Betty says. “She was the child that would find something out of place in Walmart and search till she found where it went. Her current job as Director of Red Lick Christian Preschool suits her perfectly.”
Their second daughter, Jessie, already stands out because she is the only child with blue eyes, a trait that she inherited from both of her grandmothers. “She has also always been a major tomboy. She would avoid the typical ‘girly’ colors and wouldn’t wear pink if her life depended on it! She was my blue jeans and boot girl!”
Betty says. She is now teaching PE at Malta ISD and helping in the classrooms. It really suits her well.”
Alyssa is the third child, the third girl, and the last girl. She was known as the “girly girl” and enjoyed dressing up. “She’s also an early riser. She would wake up at the crack of dawn, expecting to start her day, whether or not anyone else wanted to,” Betty says. “She always had an eye for photography and creative things. From a very early age she would take the best pictures. It also suits her to work for ALT Magazine where she is a graphic designer and editor, arranging the ads and layout of the magazine.”
Their final child is Jared, a boy who gets teased as “an accident” due to the six-year age difference between him and Alyssa. By the time Betty found out she was pregnant, she had gotten rid of all her baby stuff. “But, I know God has different plans for him because, from the very beginning, I knew I was having a boy. He made me so sick when I was pregnant with him,” Betty says. “Jared is definitely my son. He has my sarcastic attitude and, as I have been told, my ‘look.’ I have been told all my life that my eyes say it all, and his are the same. He
graduated from A&M Texarkana with his Electrical Engineering degree and works at Expal in Hooks. As he says, ‘I’m good at math.”
For Betty, the best part of motherhood was seeing her children grow up to be responsible adults with strong family values and a love for God. Over the years, Betty’s family has only continued to grow. She has acquired three great sons-inlaw, Jason, Scott, and Carl, and two grandchildren, Michael and Alexandra.
When Betty looks back on her years of motherhood, the memory she will never forget occurred when her husband passed away. “They all surrounded me with love and pulled together to ensure I was okay. The love they showed for me and each other was very special,” Betty says. “To experience the love and respect of your children is the most important thing. I can’t imagine my life any other way.”

Brandy Dabenport
Brandy Debenport and her husband, John, are the parents to four children: John (25), Margaret (21), Lizzie (19), and Natalie (14). When John was born in 1999, Brandy was thrilled to be a mom. “I had always dreamed of the day I would become a parent. Holding John for the first time was everything I thought it would be! My heart was so full!” Brandy says. “The birth of each of my children was such a moving display of God’s miraculous power. The idea that we have the privilege of co-creating life with God is too incredible to describe. What a gift! Watching my children’s personalities develop as they grew was so much fun. They are unique, and I love the young people they have become!”
Brandy always says that she is amazed that even though all four of her children come from the same DNA pool, they each have such different qualities that make them unique. For example, John has
always been driven. “He has known that he wanted to be an attorney since he was very young and will graduate from law school this May. Nothing stops John. When he sets his heart and mind on something, he makes it happen no matter what obstacles he faces,” Brandy says. “Margaret is deeply empathic. From her youngest years, I could see that she carried others’ pain for them authentically. She has the kindest heart and always roots for the underdog. She seeks peace in every situation and wants it for the whole world.”
Lizzie is the gentle spirit of the family. She is easygoing and never stops smiling. “She also has deep, deep faith, and she is a ray of sunshine for everyone she meets!” Brandy says. “Natalie is so outgoing. She’s never met a stranger and makes friends wherever she goes. She is hilarious, too. Natalie is quite the performer. She loves to
sing, dance, and act. She keeps us laughing and thoroughly entertained!”
When Brandy needs advice or help with issues that have naturally emerged from raising four children, she reaches out to her mom, who is always willing to lend a listening ear and help Brandy think through decisions. However, Brandy also calls her mentor and friend, Mrs. Bertie Norton. “I call her pretty frequently,” Brandy says. “She mentored me when I began my career as an elementary school principal but is now more like a second mom to me. Bertie has given me some of the best advice along the way! I am blessed with two incredible women I can lean on when needed!
If Brandy had a chance to share her advice with young mothers, she said that it would be not to get wrapped up in what the world teaches about motherhood. Brandy

says that when she was younger, she often had people say unkind things about having a larger family. “If you are able, have LOTS of children. If I had to do it over, I would have had several more,” Brandy says. “Children are a gift from God given to us to love and nurture. Have as many as possible, spend as much time with them as possible, and soak up every minute. Everyone says this, but it’s true –they grow up so fast! You will blink, and they will leave the nest. All the ‘things’ the world says are important are not. Children don’t need things. They need YOU!”
Brandy and Dan knew they wanted to emphasize the importance of faith and manners when raising their kids. They said that when the children were little, they took them to mass each Sunday and tried diligently to teach them the tenets of their faith and to love Jesus. “My Catholic faith always has the most substantial influence on my parenting, and the most important thing to me as a mom is that they know Jesus as their savior. While I want their lives to be full of good things, nothing is as important as their relationship with Jesus Christ,” Brandy says. “Also, I have always had high expectations for my children regarding their behavior.
It was (and still is) important to me that they always be mannerly and courteous. I expected them to listen to adults and follow the directions given. I wanted them to answer adults with, ‘Yes, ma’am,’ or ‘Yes, sir.’ I taught them to work hard and make good choices.”
When Brandy was growing up, her parents often took the family on trips, and Brandy treasured the memories of those vacations. “We did everything from camping at Lake Wright Patman to visiting Disney World, and when I became a mom, I knew I would want to travel frequently with my children if I could. Dan and I were so blessed to do just that,” Brandy says. “We have taken our family on many vacations. I hope my children have good memories of those experiences, just like I did of my childhood.”
One of Brandy’s favorite memories of the family occurred on one of these trips. When their kids ranged in age from about four to fifteen, Dan and Brandy took the whole family to California to see friends stationed in San Diego and visit Disneyland. “We drove the entire way and took our time doing so. The kids were so well-behaved, and we have great memories of the whole vacation,” Brandy says.
“Anytime we are all together is so special!”
Time together was often a balancing act for the busy family. All four children were very involved in school, church, and extracurricular activities, and the family seemed to be always on the run. However, it was essential to Dan and Brandy that the family sit together for dinner at least several times a week, even when it was extremely difficult. “Trying to get everyone to all their activities and maintain some balance was so tough. Motherhood, and life in general, is such a balancing act,” Brandy says. “In the end, I think we did a pretty good job. We had to hold tight to what we felt was most important and say no to things that interfered.”
Brandy has now entered a new phase of motherhood – mothering young adults. “Watching them chase their dreams and become responsible adults is fantastic. I love cheering them on in all their endeavors!” Brandy says. “My children have made me a much better person. They have strengthened my faith by watching their faith grow and helped me gain perspective about what’s really important in life. I cannot imagine my life without my children!”

Katie Duke and her husband, Dakotah Duke, became parents for the first time in 2021 with the birth of their daughter, Caroline Jane. Though becoming a parent amid the pandemic was already challenging enough, Katie began to notice that Caroline was not using her right arm and hand the way she used her left. She went to her pediatrician with her concerns, but they were waved aside. “The greatest challenge I’ve had as a mom was ‘trusting my gut’ when I felt things weren’t right with my daughter’s health and development. However, I was grateful enough to have a friend specializing in pediatric occupational therapy who encouraged me to trust my gut and demand the proper referrals to confirm my suspicions,” Katie says. “Because of this experience, I have overcome that challenge by building confidence in my ability to advocate for my family and their needs.”
Katie Duke
Due to Katie’s determination, it was eventually found that Caroline Jane survived a perinatal stroke in utero. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. “It has not been easy to become a parent to a developmentally delayed child, but we were able to find a lot of support and love from both our family and therapeutic resources like Temple Memorial Pediatric Center,” Katie says. “Caroline has also proven to have the greatest balance of determination and sassiness to overcome any obstacle set in front of her. She has not let her diagnosis define her, and she has excelled with the help she has received.”
While seeking support for Caroline’s diagnosis, Katie also gave birth to her second daughter, Anna Kate, in 2022. “Anna Kate brings the fun and laughs wherever she goes. She loves to do silly things to make anyone laugh, moves to the

beat of her own drum, and has the biggest personality. She definitely brought a light to our lives that we so desperately needed,” Katie says. “Motherhood has shown me a love that is so innocent, pure, and unconditional, and I have never been more proud of anything in my life as I am to be Caroline and Anna’s mama.”
Katie says that being a mom has given her a renewed sense of purpose and determination. “Motherhood has made me into my favorite version of myself. Seeing the small and big milestones my daughters meet brings me so much joy,” Katie says. “The unconditional intensity of the love they give is indescribable.”
Though there are already many unforgettable memories of their family, Katie says that several moments are truly unforgettable.
018 ALT Magazine | May 2024
“For Caroline, it was the moment she realized she had a right arm and hand. She had only used her left due to her condition, but I will never forget when she realized that her right arm and hand were functional and she could use them to play with her toys. That milestone is burned in my mind and always brings me to tears when I speak about it,” Katie says. “Even in Anna Kate’s 18 months of life, I will always remember her everyday moments of enjoying the simplest things and being the sunshine wherever she goes.”
When Katie was growing up, her mother modeled and encouraged open dialogue, a practice that Katie incorporated into her parenting
style. Though I prefer to have clear rules, I always want to enforce them with warmth and support to my children,” Katie says. I want them to know I will always value their input.”
Katie’s mother and mother-inlaw are both a very active part of her life, and her daughters’ lives, and Katie says that motherhood is so much easier with support from her family and friends. “I am so fortunate with my ‘village.’ My mother is my go-to for all my questions, rants, or breakdowns, and my mother-in-law is also a voice of reason and giver of grace that I need and appreciate,” Katie says, “I am also lucky to have my grandmother in my life. She brings
me back to reality when I get overwhelmed with things that don’t really matter. And I am so blessed with a handful of friends who give me encouragement and love amid the chaos of motherhood.”
Katie knows she will always lean on her faith in God to guide her family no matter what the future holds. “I am far from a perfect mom. Thankfully, I rely on the One who is perfect, and He covers me with grace daily,” Katie says. “I am a mom who has a heart for Jesus and loves my babies with my entire heart. I get up every day and try my best to grow the kingdom through my children by instilling in them the value of being disciples and loving the Lord.”

Ashton Johnson
MOTHER OF 1
The day that Ashton Johnson became a mom was the best day of her life. After persevering through the mental and physical toll of fertility issues for four years, she felt blessed to give birth to her son, Everett, at the end of 2022. “From the moment I first held him, I knew I was always meant to be his mom,” Ashton says. “Now, Everett is at the age where his personality is really coming through. I have loved every stage, but I love seeing him become his own little person. He is kind and sweet and loves snuggles. He is great at telling everyone ‘No,’
and he loves to belly laugh with his favorite people.”
Even though Ashton loves being a mom, it was hard at first. Not only did she struggle with fertility, but she also experienced a lot of postpartum anxiety. Though she had dealt with anxiety her whole life, she was unprepared for how it would feel as a new mom. “It took some time to overcome the brunt of it, and medication helped the first couple of months. I struggled to return to work; I felt like this wasn’t what it was supposed to be like. I wanted to be with my baby and raise my baby, not have someone
else do it,” Ashton says. “As he has gotten older, the anxiety has lessened a lot, and it no longer leads to panic attacks. I also switched to a more hybrid schedule, which has greatly helped.”
As a Christian, Ashton says that her main goal as a parent is to teach Everett about Jesus and raise him to be a good man. “My entire job as a mom is to keep him safe while also teaching him how to follow the Lord and not the world,” Ashton says. I also know that one day, he will be a husband and father, and I want to raise him to be a good one.”
Ashton says she had the best example of motherhood from her mom, who was always caring and understanding. “If I am half the mom to Everett as my mom was to me, I will be the best mom,” Ashton says. “My mom and I talk multiple times daily, and it’s the best part of my day. Even if I knew I would be in trouble as a child, I was never scared to tell my mom anything. I knew she loved me unconditionally and still does. I want my son to feel that kind of love.”
One thing that Ashton is looking forward to experiencing with Everett is going on vacations. “I want to take him to as many places as possible because I remember traveling a lot as a child,” Ashton says. “I had the best childhood because of all the different cultures I had the honor of experiencing.”
Ashton says that her favorite memories with Everett are the first time she held him, the

first time he smiled, the first time he belly laughed, and all of the other “firsts” that have changed her life. “I love the big hugs, the toothy laughs, and kisses he wakes me up with in the morning. Even the notso-fun moments are learning experiences and a chance to grow,” Ashton says. “I am a completely different person. I no longer come first but in the best way. I love my title of ‘Mom.”
Tasty Donuts
My dream Mother’s Day would include good food and lots of love. Nothing special, just spending time with my perfect son!
The best advice I’ve ever received is that being a mom is both the best and most challenging thing you will ever do.
One thing I want to do with my kid is take him on a family trip to the national parks.
The one thing I wish I had known about parenting is that on the days that you think, “’I could’ve been a better mom today,” it was probably a great day for your child. Kids seem to find all the good in everything!
The best gift my kids could ever give me would be loving Jesus and spreading the love I pour into him.

Alexis
Meadows MOTHER OF 3
Alexis Meadows worried she was not ready to be a mom at only 21 years old. However, when Levi, her oldest, was born, Alexis says, “it was terrifying but absolutely beautiful at the same time.”
Today, Alexis is the mother of three amazing children: Levi (8), Asher (6), and Ruby (born December 28, 2023). “The day each of them was born and placed in their daddy’s arms is the memory that I will never forget,” Alexis says. Honestly, without being cheesy, what’s not to love about being a mom? Tiny humans and their dads who love you unconditionally are a win-win. Everything about being a mom is awesome.”
As all mothers know, it does not matter that siblings are raised under the same roof; their personalities are guaranteed to be vastly different. This is true for Alexis’ three children. “Levi is sweet and tender-hearted. He
sees things very black and white, and there is no in between with him! He’s so serious about life, especially about sports! He’s smart as a whip, and he’s going places,” Alexis says. “He’s also a little old man in a way, yet still learning who he is. Since he is my oldest, I feel like I’m learning with him how to be a parent at every new age. We both grow and learn together.”
Alexis’ middle child, Asher, is the life of the party. “He is our ham. His life is full of color and fun. He won’t let anyone walk over him, and he knows what he wants. Asher is super athletic, and he puts on a good show! You never know what you’ll get with him, but he sure makes life exciting,” Asher says. “Our baby, Ruby, is spunky so far, but she’s the best baby. I can’t wait to watch her grow and learn who she is.”
It’s important to Alexis that the kids are raised to work hard, love
people, show integrity, and have courage. “We let our kids know that their feelings matter and are valid, and we can work through them,” Alexis says. “At the end of every day, we want to raise our kids to be good humans, and we want them to know they are loved and seen.”
When Alexis needs advice about being a mom, she has several women in her life that she can turn to in her close friend group, family, and church. However, the biggest challenge she’s faced as a mom is overcoming her own childhood trauma. “I had to do this so that I could be the best possible parent to each of my kids in every stage of their life,” Alexis says. “Everything that happened to me in my childhood, I chose to do the opposite when raising my kids. And I have.”
Being a mother has taught Alexis more things about herself than she
024 ALT Magazine | May 2024
ever believed it would. She says that it has allowed her to grow as a person, parent, and wife, and she hopes her story inspires others who may have trauma in their past to know that they can overcome it. “It
can be a process, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. But you can find healing, purpose, and love,” Alexis says. “I never thought I’d marry someone who loves me so much. I never thought I could be a momma.
My dream Mother’s Day would include an all-inclusive beach/Disney two-week vacation with my husband and kids! Hands down, that would be the best.
The best advice I’ve ever received as a mom is to think about the actual cause of the issue. We were taught to use this process in our pre-marriage counseling, but it applies to everything. Instead of thinking that you are the problem or they are the problem, focus on the “problem is the problem.” For example, “The problem is my kids don’t feel heard, or the problem is I don’t feel valued. So how do we fix this?”
One thing I want to do with my kids is go to every home game of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The one thing I wish I had known about parenting is that you will be ok. I was terrified when I became a momma and didn’t think I could do it at first.
The best gift my kids could ever give me would be living their lives for Jesus because He’s the only thing that matters.
I never thought I could forgive those who hurt me. But here I am. Married ten years this year with three babies and a heart so full. My cup overflows daily.

Tonja Hodde was a school teacher for 17 years, and she was drawn to that position because of her strengths as an encourager. “I have always loved inspiring others to learn and empower them to reach their highest potential,” Tonja says. “However, being an entrepreneur was modeled so well by my father. So in 1998, I sought a career change that would allow me to be an entrepreneur, and I began my journey as a wellness coach.”
From there, Tonja started the first Commercial Nutrition Center in the USA in 2005. “Herbalife refers to them as Nutrition Clubs, and did you know that there are now more Nutrition Clubs in America than McDonald’s?” Tonja says, “Watching how the industry has exploded with a passion to help people get healthy has been amazing.
Because of my past health challenges, I know I have been called to help people take responsibility for their own health. I love empowering people to make positive health changes and watching their lives transform when they implement the recommendations. Teaching people how to thrive in life and not just survive is one of the greatest joys of my work.”
TONJA HODDE ARKLATEX EENERGY HEALING CENTER
Today, Tonja has been a wellness coach for over 25 years with Herbalife and has three Nutrition Centers in town: Texarkana Nutrition, Richmond Nutrition, and Summerhill Nutrition. They also serve Fouke and New Boston. “We have an amazing group of wellness coaches that help these communities with the nutrition mission,” Tonja says.
Because of her occupation in the wellness industry, Tonja is always searching for holistic wellness alternatives. So, over three years ago, when she learned about Tesla Energy Enhancement Healing (EES) technology, she was immediately interested and wanted to bring it to Texarkana. However, she had to wait for the technology’s release to the public. “Although it was approved by the government in 2001 with thirdparty studies, it has been hidden from the world until two years ago,” Tonja says. “However, as soon as we heard, my husband, Richard, and I signed up to open a Healing Center in Texarkana. With God’s inspiration and guidance, the Healing Center was a perfect fit for my wellness career.”
Tonja’s partner in life and business is her husband, Richard. They have been together for over ten years, and Tonja says that Richard is “the most amazing man” she has ever known. “We have a blended family of 8 children: Rich, Russell, Ethan, Elizabeth, Ceci, Gabe, Lindsey, and Kole,” Tonja says. “The GRAND gifts they gave us range from 19 years old to newborn: Maggie, Cade, Macy, Cash, Emily, Aurora, Luther, and Zara. They are the next generation of WHY we continue to pursue our dreams.”
Richard and Tonja worked together to build the ArkLaTex EEnergy Healing Center from the ground up. “We did everything together. We both have a heart for the hurting, and we are sensitive to the Lord’s leading and who He brings for healing,” Tonja says. The inventor of this technology, Dr. Sandra Rose Michael, has a slogan that says, ‘The One who created the body heals the body.’ Putting our bodies in the right atmosphere and energy is the key.”
Bringing awareness to the benefits and opportunities at ArkLaTex Energy Healing Center is a daily passion for Tonja and Richard, especially since it is one of less than 500 energy enhancement healing centers worldwide. “It has been such a gift to watch people enter the Healing Center with physical, mental, and spiritual ailments and watch them come out of a session with such incredible healing experiences,” Tonja says. “I love to hear how each person describes their unique experience.”
028 ALT Magazine | May 2024
Tonja says that she is “relentless” in her pursuit of sharing the news of what this technology can do. They utilize person-to-person invites, social media, flyers, referrals, TV ads, and magazines to help them spread the word. “We feel so blessed to have a front-row seat with the clients who have turned into friends and family. Our goals right now are to create awareness and opportunities for all to realize the possibilities of healing in this Scalar Energy Healing Center,” Tonja says. “I will continue to educate people on taking control of their health through daily disciplines.”
Tonja says that her daily motivation comes from a desire to help others and serve the Lord. “He wakes me up each morning at 4 a.m. with a passion and a drive to expectantly watch for His direction and leading. Every encounter with EVERY person is on purpose and by His design. Each day is a gift; that’s why they call it the Present, and I’m blessed to wake up healthy and driven to unwrap the gifts of the day that He provides,” Tonja says. “The other thing that drives me daily is that I know how many people are hurting and sick. This drives me to be bold and share the power of the Healing Center!”
When Tonja looks back on her life, she says she will know she has achieved “success” if she did two things. “I measure success by the hope that I am living out the purpose that God has called me for and making an impact in my community,” Tonja says. “I’ve always been inspired by this quote from Jim Rohn, ‘Leave people better than you found them and do more than what you get paid for.’”
FUN FACT!
My husband and I are involved in the Texarkana community through our worship team at Trinity Baptist Church. He plays bass guitar and I play piano. I have led medical mission teams to Honduras for many years. I also participate in health fairs and community events to bring wellness awareness to the community.
My comfort food is Mexican.
Most people don’t know that I am an identical twin and am bilingual in Spanish
My hype song is “Speak Life” by Toby Mac
One thing on my bucket list is to visit the Holy Land.
Tonja wants to leave behind a legacy of passion for people, family, community, and wellness. “I love the quote, ‘She was relentless in the pursuit of what set her heart on fire,’ and I know that applies to me,” Tonja says. I want people to remember me for loving people well and sharing a passion for physical, mental, and spiritual health.”

We had met previously, working together at Sonic Drive-In. We reconnected during the pandemic in 2020. We were inseparable after a stroll in the park on our first date. After dating for a couple of years, we went on a trip to Colorado. Camron waited for the right moment on a morning walk in Estes Park. He found a beautiful bridge we had crossed and circled back to pop the question. Surrounded by stunning mountains at Lake Estes, we were engaged and ready to begin our life together. After a year of planning, we married on September 30, 2023, at Garrison Gardens.

Colton and Haley
Colton and I met through mutual friends when we were very young; we lived in the same neighborhood for a few years. Shortly after we met, Colton moved out of the neighborhood, and we lost touch for a couple of years. One day, we reconnected and have been inseparable ever since. We started dating in the summer of 2016. Colton moved back to his hometown in the fall/winter of 2016 to go to school and live with his grandpa while he was in school. In 2020, I lost my job due to COVID-19, so I went to stay with Colton for a little while to find a job and do my schoolwork. I never left; I went home to get the rest of my stuff and moved in with Colton. In 2021, we purchased our first home together and have been in it ever since. On Christmas 2022, for some reason, I had a gut feeling that he had a ring, but I didn’t know when he would propose. Being so convinced that it would be on Christmas, I looked in all the stockings, tree branches, and everywhere I could think of where he would have the ring, and I couldn’t find it. A little while later, Colton told me he had forgotten one of my presents, which was on the counter. When I finally turned around and looked at him (I was doing something in the other room and didn’t think it was a huge gift), he was proposing to me. He planned on proposing when we took couple’s portraits together, but since I was on to him, he decided to do it then! Our couple’s portraits turned into an engagement session. Colton and I have been and always will be best friends; we love to laugh with each other, and we’re excited to spend the rest of our lives making each other laugh.

Tyler and Katelyn met in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic when everything was shut down. They met on a dating app, Bumble. Tyler and Katelyn recognized each other from high school, and both swiped right since they knew the person existed and it wasn’t a scam! They had their first date a week later, but remember, it was a pandemic. They picked up Mexican food to-go and took it back to Tyler’s place since restaurants weren’t fully open again. They ate, laughed, and watched a movie there, and the love began. From that day on, they were inseparable. They spent their time together over the next few years, traveling to the lake, getting a sweet dog named Daisy, and spending all their time together. Tyler proposed to Katelyn on Christmas Day 2022 with their sweet Daisy beside them.

HELP SAFEGUARD YOUR ASSETS FROM A BENEFICIARY’S DIVORCE
ESTATE & GIVING
How a careful and intentional trust will help ensure your intentions are upheld.
Smart estate planning doesn’t just take into account what you’ll pass down to your heirs, but how you’ll do it. There are numerous ways to make the transfer, and some offer more protection than others. If one of your heirs gets divorced down the line, you don’t want to risk your wealth ending up in unintended hands.
One of the simplest ways to transfer your wealth to your family is by naming beneficiaries on your accounts. But even assets solely in your child or grandchild’s name might be up for debate in a divorce proceeding. At the very least, the asset can be used in consideration when determining alimony or child support.
Here are some ways you can help protect your estate from an heir’s divorce.
Wording is everything
First, enlist an estate planning attorney to advise you on the correct wording when it comes to trust documents. Be sure to express your concern about assets becoming vulnerable in the case of an heir’s divorce. The attorney should include language that helps protect your beneficiaries from an ex-spouse claiming entitlement to any of the inheritance.
Be painfully clear in trust documents by explicitly stating that nonbeneficiaries are not entitled to receive any assets from the trust even if they’re married to a beneficiary. Make your intentions specific to reduce the possibility they
come into question during a divorce proceeding.
While trusts often use language that specifies absolute requirements for payments – in other words, conditions for the distribution of assets – they can become a conflict point in a divorce. If a court determines the distribution of assets was guaranteed, the court may consider dividing assets between the couple.
You may also want to think about indirect distribution of assets. You can allow the trust to make payments to third parties instead of distributing them directly to your beneficiary. Examples include declaring the trust will pay college tuition or fees, or for repaying your beneficiaries’ loans.
Think about structure
Some states are better for protecting assets in a divorce than others. Alaska, Nevada, South Dakota and Tennessee currently allow courts to shield assets in a trust from divorce claims, including alimony and child support. You should know the laws that govern your trust, which will depend on where it originated.
As the trust grantor, you have the power to decide what a trustee can do. It’s possible to expand the trustee’s powers to allow for specific changes to the trust if it becomes compromised by an heir’s divorce. This might include authorizing your trustee or successor trustees to remove a beneficiary completely if there’s an impending divorce, or move assets into a completely new
trust for the divorcing beneficiary.
If you know exactly what you want to pass on to an heir who you’re concerned may get divorced, you can create an irrevocable trust for that express purpose. Unlike revocable trusts, the terms of an irrevocable trust cannot be changed. Once the trust is funded and the assets are transferred to the control of the trustee, it’s permanent. You could create a second trust that’s revocable for the purpose of transferring your other assets to other family members.
Most importantly, speak to your advisor about your heirs’ inheritance in the case of divorce. Consulting an estate attorney and even a divorce attorney in some instances may be helpful when creating or revisiting your estate planning documents. There are provisions that can be put in place to help ensure your wealth, family and intentions are protected. Mothers
Today, there are many types of mothers: birth moms, stepmoms (I prefer inherited moms,) and an adopted mom. Sometimes, the latter two take on the position better than a birth mom.
The role of mom has evolved over the years. Prior to the 1950s, moms were in the home, and their only outside interests were PTA and a garden club.
Today’s moms work outside the home and must balance household duties, a job, getting their children to dance, sports, and various after-school activities.
The other mom who sometimes gets side-stepped is a fur baby mom. The role may be by choice or for other reasons, i.e., divorce, widow, empty nest, or inability to conceive, but they love and care for these furry little friends and become their mom. It’s a job that is more than a caregiver; it’s genuine motherly love.
Far too many grandmothers have had to accept the position of mom for their grandchildren. At a time when they should be enjoying life without child-rearing, they have had to take on the reins of mom again. God bless them.
And then there are mothers-in-law. They are the brunt of many jokes, but remember that they birthed and raised the love of your life. They can’t be all bad! I was fortunate. I had a mother in love; without her, I could not have raised three inherited boys.
Another mom who doesn’t get recognition today is dads who step up to the mom role for various reasons. God help them. When my husband received total custody of his boys in 1969, he said he had to be mom, chauffeur, chief cook, and bottle washer. It was a position he took responsibility for even before his divorce. Fortunately, he had his mom, who was his saving grace. Not all men are so blessed. There’s a saying, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” There is a lot of truth in that statement. Moms will raise the next generation of future presidents, scientists, politicians, and parents who will rule our future.
If you are a mom of any type, enjoy your day set aside to honor your role in raising the next generation. Guide them carefully!
