Drift Out West Fly Fishing
For anyone based in or around Calgary, how’s this for a relaxing outdoor adventure?
Your experienced guide picks you up and whisks you (and up to one other guest) to the edge of the Bow River, where you float quietly along in a drift boat, taking in the sights and sounds of nature as you try your hand at fly fishing. Your guide provides all equipment, food/drinks, fishing advice and historical knowledge; you bring a willingness to learn (and an Alberta Sportfishing License).
“A lot of people are surprised at how remote it feels when we’re only a half-hour drive out of the city,” says Quinn Soonias, the owner and guide of Drift Out West Fly Fishing.
Quinn, who has been fishing the Bow River since 2007, offers half-day and full-day guided tours for up to two people, as well as half-day fly-fishing lessons to groups. Hailing from the prairies and now based in Alberta, Quinn is proud of his Plains Cree heritage and, for those interested, also shares his knowledge of Indigenous history, pointing out a buffalo jump along the river and highlighting the First Nations who used the waterway the most (including the Tsuu Tʼina and Siksika).
And what about the fish? Quinn’s goal is to help his guests land a big trout varieties like brown, rainbow and cutthroat, which are “some of the strongest fighting fish,” he says. In fact, one of his guests caught the biggest fish Quinn has ever seen, a brown trout about 27 inches long. “Probably as big as some people’s legs,” he says. “It just exploded out of the water!”
Since the Bow River is catch-and-release, that monster fish went right back in the water (after the requisite bragging-rights photo, of course). Care to try your hand at catching it?
Book a half-day or full-day tour with Quinn on his website: driftoutwest.com
