Mi interés por el arte nació cuando estuve expuesta desde los 8 años a la pintura con el gran maestro Robin Bond.

Con él aprendí diferentes técnicas de expresión de mis sentimientos y emociones a través del arte. Años después, otros maestros me enseñaron la parte intelectual, profundicé en la historia del arte e historia en general. Siempre tuve el interés por estudiar, leer, visitar museos y galerías.

Estudiando es como desarrollé mi estilo en pintura, hasta encontrar lo que yo llamo: abstracto figurativo y simbólico.

El pintar abstracto, me hace sentir más libre. Habiendo experimentado el realismo en mis inicios, tengo ahora una forma más expresiva, abierta y sin límites.

My interest in art was born when I was exposed from the age of 8 to painting with the great master Robin Bond. With him I learned different techniques of expressing my feelings and emotions through art. Years later, other teachers taught me the intellectual part, I went into the history of art and history in general. I always had the interest to study, read, visit museums and galleries.

Studying is how I developed my style in painting, until I found what I call: abstract figurative and symbolic.

Abstract painting makes me feel freer.

Having experienced realism in my beginnings, I now have a more expressive, open and unlimited form.

I have been painting figurative abstract for about 6 years. Now I want to do sculpture, maybe it will be for next year.

Artistic influences? Yes, I think that one always grows under certain influences. For me it has been that of several masters like: Gustav Klimt, Remedios Varo and Rufino Tamayo. From them I have taken elements like their way of using the color, composition and simbology in my technique of expression. These elements, have made me acquire a personal style.

When a person observes my work, it always has a reaction, a personal feeling and sometimes it coincides with my way of seeing and my intentions when expressing a theme. But on other occasions, their interpretation is very different, which is very interesting because it teaches me other points of view.

Llevo alrededor de 6 años pintando abstracto figurativo. Ahora deseo hacer escultura, tal vez será para el año próximo. ¿Influencias artísticas? Sí, creo que siempre uno crece bajo ciertas influencias.

Para mí ha sido la de varios maestros como: Gustav Klimt, Remedios Varo y Rufino Tamayo. De ellos he tomado elementos como su forma de usar el color, composición y la simbología en mi técnica de expresión. Estos elementos, me han hecho adquirir un estilo personal.

Cuando una persona observa mi obra, siempre tiene una reacción, un sentimiento personal y a veces coincide con mi forma de ver y mi intención al expresar un tema. Pero en otras ocasiones, su interpretación es muy diferente, lo cual, es muy interesante, porque me enseña otros puntos de vista.

Me gusta también escuchar la opinión de un niño sobre mi obra, ya que, la capacidad de ellos en ver diferentes figuras y formas siempre es ilimitada.

Constantemente pienso en cuál será lo que sigue en mi carrera, es como un reto personal. Pienso hacia dónde me dirijo en este camino de artista y no lo sé. Pero siento la satisfacción de lo que he experimentado en estos últimos dos años viviendo aquí en San Miguel de Allende. Un cambio muy intenso en mi obra, ha habido cambios en mi paleta de colores, estoy metida en una producción constante y abarco variedad de temas. Quiero trabajar en formatos más grandes.

Estoy muy satisfecha con mi trabajo actual: como artista y galerista. Además, en este mismo período, mi actividad dentro de Galería Manuk, me ha dado la oportunidad de conocer a grandes maestros mexicanos todos ellos.

Me interesa mucho el arte contemporáneo que tiene cada vez más abierto el camino en sus diferentes formas de expresión. En México contamos con artistas dentro del arte contemporáneo, arte conceptual, y arte tecnológico como son Ivan Puig, Damián Ortega, Gabriel Orozco y Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Todos ellos, tienen su propio estilo original y único.

I also like to hear a child's opinion about my work, since their ability to see different figures and forms is always unlimited.

I constantly think about what is next in my career, it is a personal challenge. I think of where I am going on this path as an artist and I do not know. But I feel the satisfaction of what I have experienced in these last two years living here in San Miguel de Allende. A very intense change in my work, there have been changes in my color palette, I am in a constant production and cover a variety of subjects. I want to work in larger formats.

I am very satisfied with my current job: as an artist and gallery owner. In addition, in this same period, my activity inside Gallery Manuk, has given me the opportunity to meet great Mexican teachers all of them.

Los temas actuales en el arte contemporáneo son referentes a problemas sociales como el medio ambiente, contaminación, basura, violencia, inseguridad y la carrera tecnológica. Temas pujantes por lo que el arte actual, aprovecha esta forma de expresión para lanzar un mensaje y transmitirlo a todo observador.

Es difícil en ocasiones, entender el concepto de cada expresión pero, siento que estamos viviendo una época en la que el arte es más libre que nunca!

En mi posición de propietaria de galería, puedo apreciar que la clientela mexicana busca en la compra lograr una inversión y por qué no, comprar una oportunidad. Las obras que les atraen más no son con temática mexicana, buscan colores neutros, sobrios, les interesa la obra abstracta y decorativa.

Contemporary art has increasingly opened the way in its different forms of expression. In Mexico we have artists in contemporary art, conceptual art, and technological art such as Ivan Puig, Damiรกn Ortega, Gabriel Orozco and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. All of them, have their own original and unique style.

Current issues in contemporary art are related to social problems such as the environment, pollution, garbage, violence, insecurity and the technological career. Throbbing themes so the current art, takes advantage of this form of expression to launch a message and transmit it to every observer.

It is difficult at times to understand the concept of each expression but, I feel that we are living in an era in which art is freer than ever!

In my position as a gallery owner, I can appreciate that the Mexican clientele looks for in the purchase to achieve an investment and why not, to buy an opportunity. The kind of art that Mexicans like more often are not exactly

Mexican-themed, they look for neutral colors, sober, interested in abstract and decorative work. The foreign customer is fonder of bright colors, interested in having pieces with Mexican themes and are interested in knowing the artist. Sometimes, when I am present in the sale of one of my works, they are very open to talk with me and know the story behind my painting.

And that is a good point because art must be open to all human beings, regardless of age, nationality or socio-economic position.

I would like all people to have an opportunity to the artistic world in any of its expressions such as painting, sculpture, music, etc.

Knowledge of art must begin at an early age. First at home as basic education and also in elementary school (because it is also true that not in all homes parents have preparation to induce children into artistic feelings.) extranjero tiene más gusto por los colores vivos, se interesan por tener piezas con temas mexicanos y se interesan por saber del artista. En ocasiones, cuando estoy presente en la venta de una de mis obras, son muy abiertos a platicar conmigo y saber la historia detrás de mi pintura.

El arte debe de estar abierto a todo ser humano, no importando su edad, nacionalidad o posición socioeconómica.

Me gustaría que todas las personas, tuvieran oportunidad al mundo artístico en cualquiera de sus expresiones tales como la pintura, escultura, música etc.

El conocimiento del arte debe comenzar desde la edad temprana. En el hogar primero y también en la escuela básica (porque también es cierto que no en todos los hogares existe la preparación para inducir a los niños en los sentimientos artísticos. Desde temprana edad todos los niños deberían tener la oportunidad de aprender del arte. Desgraciadamente en una gran proporción de las escuelas de México, esta materia no es considerada vital para el desarrollo educativo.

La Catrina es ya una figura icónica en la celebración del Dia de Muertos, probablemente la tradición más arraigada y de más fuerza sentimental en los mexicanos. En San Miguel de Allende, México, se realizan grandes festejos en la plaza central, teatros y galerías artísticas, por encima de lo tradicional que es las ofrendas o altares que se colocan en los hogares y la visita a los panteones para acompañar las tumbas de los seres queridos, durante el 1ro. y 2 de noviembre.

Apareció entonces José Guadalupe Posada. Era un grabador en madera y sabía litografía. Nacido en Aguascalientes, México, en 1988 vino a la capital de la república a buscar la vida. Se instaló en su taller y buscó trabajo. Lo encontró en el periódico “El Jicote” y le pusieron a dibujar caricaturas. Como una crítica social dibujó a una mujer-calavera de sombrero elegante y la llamó “La Calavera Garbancera” «...en los huesos pero con sombrero francés con sus plumas de avestruz»., es decir una mujer que pretendía ser aristócrata pero que vendía garbanzos para subsistir. Esto se hace notable por el hecho de que la calavera no tiene ropa sino únicamente el sombrero; desde el punto de vista de Posada, es una crítica a muchos mexicanos del pueblo que son pobres, pero que aun así quieren aparentar un estilo de vida europeo que no les corresponde. Y los llamaban “Catrinas o Catrines” porque eso es lo que significa la palabra: vestir con elegancia.

José Guadalupe Posada falleció en la Ciudad de México el 20 de enero de 1913.

La tradición de festejar a los difuntos en México, ha crecido año con año. Cada Dia de Muertos, los rituales se convierten en festejos que brillan con la aparición de los personajes maquillados y con vestuarios nacidos en la inspiración de las Catrinas de José Guadalupe Posada.

En el centro cultural de Fabrica La Aurora, de San Miguel de Allende, México, que reúne multitud de galerías artísticas, el Día de Muertos es una de las más brillantes celebraciones dentro de los acostumbrados Art Walks mensuales. La concurrencia está llena de Catrinas que lucen elegantes vestidos y sombreros exuberantes de la época Porfiriana. Los caballeros muestran sus ropas de osamentas y también maquillajes clásicos.

Las galerías montan las ofrendas y exhiben pintura acorde a la celebración. Aquí mostramos la riqueza de las imágenes que desfilaron en el Día de Muertos, donde todos los vivos, por un día, se sintieron como felices muertos.

The tradition of celebrating the deceased in Mexico has grown year after year. Every Day of the Dead, the rituals turn into celebrations that shine with the appearance of the personages with make up and costumes born in the inspiration of the Catrinas of Jose Guadalupe Posada.

The cultural center FĂĄbrica La Aurora, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is housing a multitude of art galleries.

The Day of the Dead (DĂ­a de Muertos) is one of the most brilliant celebrations in the usual monthly Art Walks. The crowd is full of Catrinas dressed in elegant customs with exuberant hats from the Porfirian age style. Men show their robes of bones and also classic make-up.

The galleries assemble the Ofrendas (offerings) and display artwork according to the celebration. Here we show the richness of the images that paraded on the Day of the Dead, where all the living, for a day, felt like happy dead.

Este mes trae consigo el This month brings with it the

Day of the Dead, a celebration to remember those departed and comfort their spiritual journey. Many different cultures have adopted ways to retain what and who have been important in their lives, symbols, memorials, and writings, but there has not been a stranger time for photography than during the Victorian era.

Until the 19th century, photographic images were expensive and only available to the wealthy. The Daguerreotype, invented by Louis Jacques Mane Daguerre, a silvered processed image on a copper plate that is heavy, inflexible, and required a special housing, was first introduced to the world in 1839 and would become the first photographic process available to those who could afford this new luxury. By the 1850’s, due to an increase in both photographers and less costly production, the daguerreotype would become more accessible — but to most people, a photograph was a “once in a lifetime” purchase.

Día de los Muertos, una celebración para recordar a los difuntos y confortar su viaje espiritual. Muchas culturas diferentes han adoptado maneras de retener a lo que ha sido importante en sus vidas, símbolos, memoriales y escritos, pero no ha habido un tiempo más extraño para la fotografía que durante la era victoriana.

The Victorian era

known as the period of the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) is noted for a shift in the rationalism that defined the previous Georgian period, bringing with it an increase in social acceptance towards romanticism and mysticism. This shift would not only permeate throughout Britain but would migrate to her colonies and trading partners across the Atlantic.

The availability of photography and changes in moral and social consensus also brought about an eerie interest in death and mortality. For many, the photographic image could now be a means of commemoration and remembrance. Spectral images now embodied a new outlook toward death and the preservation of loved ones. It was not unusual for post-mortem images to become a part of the mourning process—during this period, the average lifespan was approximately 40 years of age. Epidemics such as diphtheria, typhus, and cholera had ravaged the country; nurseries were plagued by measles, diphtheria, and scarlet fever—“Death” by acceptance, was “Gods will”, and by 1860 post-mortem photography had become fashionable.

Such images were displayed with great pride in family albums and on parlor furniture.

Considering the high-value placed upon those images, the photographers of post-mortem work took great measures in photographing their subjects. Distinct techniques were employed to pose subjects, frequently with their favorite personal objects or items that would portray the families wealth and status. Often parents would hold their deceased child, veiled behind the scene with a curtain or shroud. Sometimes other family members would be assembled with the deceased who were posed to appear “as in life” or sleeping.

conocida como el período del reinado de la reina Victoria (1837-1901) marcó un cambio en el racionalismo que definió el período georgiano anterior, trayendo con él un aumento en la aceptación social al romanticismo y al misticismo. La disponibilidad de la fotografía y los cambios en el consenso moral y social también produjeron un misterioso interés por la muerte y la mortalidad. Para muchos, la imagen fotográfica podría ser ahora un medio de conmemoración y recuerdo. Las imágenes espectrales ahora encarnaban una nueva perspectiva hacia la muerte y la preservación de seres queridos. No era raro que las imágenes post-mortem se convirtieran en parte del proceso de duelo -en este período, la esperanza de vida promedio era aproximadamente de 40 años de edad. By the late 1860’s

the daguerreotype in post-mortem photography had become outdated by more modern methods; the “snapshot”, and advances in medicine which curbed much of the diseases plaguing the population had allowed most families to have a photograph taken in life. The concept of a memento or mori (a Latin phrase meaning "remember that you will die") survived in fashion with the continuation of funerary and wake photography throughout the early 20th century but would no longer employ the tenderness of a daguerreotype.

There is a compelling allure to these images, yet there is also speculation as to the authenticity of many. While it is true that post-mortem photography was an accepted means of remembrance during the Victorian era, the attraction also created a marketable commodity for “imitations”, which throughout the years have been promoted on auctions, social media, newspapers, and books, The process of a daguerreotype did not lend itself to its preservation, and those that did, could only be found in museums and private collections.

Although these images are now considered morbid and unsettling they do retain a poignant sensibility.

The daguerreotype came to be during a “perfect storm”, a merging of the invention and societal change, providing a way to see life, transcendent, and on unique terms.

Monica Hoth has been "dancing' in the magic of life through many creative expressions.

She is from Mexico City and has been living in San Miguel de Allende almost 20 years. She is a writer, playwright, storyteller, puppeteer and sometime actress. She combines all these talents into a highly creative advisor for shows and has been working on a backdrop story for Patricia Rincon's recently acclaimed theater/dance production The Myth Project:Essential Bodies, which premiered November 1st in the Casa de Europe en Mexico. The original script was a creative envisioning of the prehispanic view of death but also presented the additional challenge of translating these ancient stories to have meaning for our contemporary times.

For me it was important to understand my prehispanic roots. As an artist I see the expression of my creativity always goes to the political . Art is taking risks. I also feel it is important to be critical of your own work so that you can maintain the integrity of your expressions.

The earthquake in Mexico City effected my contributions to the show . I was feeling there needed to be a bridge to the dancers and actors that was contained in the current events of death and the show. We had a group discussion and came up with some powerful ways to convey the importance of living fully in joy while you have the gift of life before you. I suggested some songs that had powerful messages and we began to incorporate them into the dramatic pieces.

When I think about the magic that creating this type of collaborative art brings it is always my intention to create an arrow that will touch the audiences hearts from the performers hearts. The entire process effects us all.

It was magical to have the opportunity to be a part of this particular show because it was already a passion I had been working with for many years. The creators of the show had no idea of my personal passion when they invited me collaborate. I consider that the beauty of syncronicity that is essential to the highest quality art that can be shared by all.

Los prehispánicos creían

I have always been interested in art since I was a child. During my 12 years of a Catholic school education there were no art programs in any of the elementary schools and the programs in the high schools were almost non-existent. I used to do all of the bulletin boards for the nuns and paint windows for the local stores during the holiday seasons. By the time I finished high school I knew I wanted to be an artist but I had no idea how to make that happen. I knew I wanted to live a different life but I had no idea how to make it happen.

Siempre me ha interesado el arte desde que era niña. I spent my first two years of college in two different colleges, and then I transferred to NYU in Greenwich Village. It was there that my entire world changed. I was constantly visiting the museums and galleries on a weekly basis. I was like a kid in a candy store.

I enrolled in a few art classes, but all of my teachers were second-generation abstract expressionists. They didn’t believe in drawing or teaching techniques and skills. I became very frustrated and I changed my major to Art History. It was the best move I ever made. The classes were extraordinary. And the professors were top rate.

It was the late 1960’s and early 70’s, which was a pretty tumultuous time. There were demonstrations against the Vietnam War almost every week and sometimes it was impossible to get into the buildings where the classes were held. One day I was walking down 8th street in Greenwich Village when there was townhouse explosion. It was caused by the premature detonation of a bomb that was being assembled by members of the Weather Underground, an American radical left group. At the time I was living in the Hotel Albert, which had a storied past history but had become a refuge for down and out musicians, drug dealers, and artists. Every day was an experience in the Village at that time, and I am so happy that I was there to live it.

When I graduated from NYU, I married Robert Santiago, a fellow student, and moved to upstate New York. Everybody was disillusioned with society and was leaving the city. It was the beginning of the end of the 60’s. My marriage was short-lived; we were both young and had our entire lives in front of us. After we separated, I moved to Woodstock, opened up a Hippie clothing store, worked as an artist’s model, and started taking classes at the Art students League.

Eventually I got a job teaching art to “ juvenile delinquents” for about 3 years. Tired of the cold weather and wanting to change my life, I moved to Venice California, where I continued to work as an artist’s model and bartender while enrolled in a graduate program in fine arts at California state University in LA. I was modeling and bartending all of the time, and although I lived in a great loft in Venice, I had very little time to paint. I got a job bartending in Topanga Canyon, where I met my current husband, Ral Curren, an architect and builder, who also owned 2 bars in Topanga, the most famous being the Topanga Corral, where a lot of famous musicians played.

After putting it off for as long as we could, I guess we both decided to officially “ enter the establishment” and make a real living. He began working as an architect for the LA school district and I became a high school art teacher. My husband and I would always travel to Mexico during the summers. We did two driving trips in the 1980’s and early 1990’s throughout Mexico, and we both fell in love with San Miguel. It was not as gentrified as it is today but we accept these changes as inevitable. When we were ready to retire, the idea of spending the last chapter of our lives in Los Angeles was not a very appealing prospect.

Soldaderas - Revolution Women We decided to visit San Miguel one more time; we had way too many margaritas at Harry’s Bar, and bought a lot in Balcones. My husband designed a beautiful home for us, with an incredible art studio for me.

Our pensions from the school district enabled us to retire and move to San Miguel.

Now I would finally had the opportunity to devote myself full time to being an artist.

During the time I lived in LA, I continued to paint, but it wasn’t until our trips to Mexico that I decided what I wanted to focus on. I have always loved painting people, probably because I l love meeting people and am always curious about their lives. So I began doing paintings So I began doing paintings about Mexico and its people and culture. I even did a series on the Mummies of Guanajuato. I have always been a representational painter, and I am pretty much self-taught. My style is evolving and I am now incorporating mixed media into my work, but I don’t think I will never be an abstract painter.

Durante el tiempo que viví en Los Ángeles, seguí pintando, pero no fue hasta nuestros viajes a México que decidí en qué quería enfocarme.

Siempre me ha gustado pintar gente, probablemente porque me encanta conocer gente y siempre siento curiosidad por sus vidas. Entonces comencé a hacer pinturas sobre México y su gente y cultura. I am reading quite a bit about the history of Mexico, and I still have a lot to learn. I have also been studying Spanish for the past six years. The first time I visited the graveyard in San Miguel, during Dia de Los Muertos, I was moved to tears by all of the families there, paying tribute to their deceased relatives. I saw it as a celebration of past family lives, and was struck by all of the flowers and musicians that populated the cemetery. I realized, that in America, most people are always on the move, and very seldom, if ever, visit their family members gravesites. And when they do it is always a solemn occasion.

I know that San Miguel has a large number of Canadian and US emigrants, but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to live in a country without embracing its culture and language. I feel like I finally found my real home.

My artwork was exhibited in Orlando Gallery in the Los Angeles area for over 30 years. The owner, Bob Gino had a big impact on my life as both an artist and collector. Most of the artwork in our home is by artists who exhibited in his gallery. Two years ago I had the opportunity to open up a gallery in Centro Historico. I called it Galeria San Francisco after the street where it is located. I always wanted to have my own gallery to show my work and other artists I believed in. It had been a dream of mine my entire adult life. I started out with a small space and gradually expanded to half the floor. I now have 12 artists that I represent who I think are some of the best artists in San Miguel.

Recently I also opened an Annex in the Fabrica Aurora, another dream of mine that finally came to fruition. We offer a variety classes at both galleries and all of my instructors are working artists as well as excellent teachers.

I am currently working on a series of paintings, which I call my â&#x20AC;&#x153; Vintage Mexico Seriesâ&#x20AC;? I am incorporating fabric, and historical photographs of Mexico, into my acrylic works. I recently finished a series of paintings on the Dia de Los Muertos. Now that I actually live in Mexico, I can truly appreciate the meaning of that special day.

Currently I am in a transitional period trying to decide what direction I want to move in, so I have been spending a lot of time reading and looking at other artists work for inspiration. I believe that being an artist is a continual learning process. I know my experience, teaching art history for so many years, has helped me to become more informed and knowledgeable about this process of making arts.

Siempre que un escritor termina una novela, es un gran motivo de celebración. El oficio de escritor no es fácil, es un poco "fuera de este mundo", es digamos..."cosa de locos"; porque es exhaustivo y es riesgoso.

Se trata del oficio de poner en el papel las ideas y los sueños, o la realidad y la crudeza, o todo fusionado, y se trata de ir tejiendo entre la realidad y la ficción.

Es una labor donde tardan en comulgar y presentarse las ideas; se trata de soñar, y luego de escribir, y después, hay que ir comenzando a esculpir, hay que ir afinando, hasta que una tarde, después de mucho tiempo de trabajo, todo está listo, y comienza la travesía de publicar.

Aún más difícil es ser escritor en un país como lo es México, nuestra tierra maravillosa plena de cultura ancestral, pero... donde pocos leemos, donde no hay mucho aprecio a la escritura, y donde además se le ha venido a desplazar por lo visual. En un país, como el nuestro, tan vasto de cultura, pero donde cada vez nos es más difícil dejarse llevar por la lectura, y donde casi no hay apoyo de editoriales para los escritores.

Pero a pesar de todo, estamos celebrando, no sólo la culminación de una novela, también su publicación, su portada, el olor de sus páginas, y el misterio de saber la opinión de sus lectores que vendrá después.

Al Tirado -como le decimos quienes le conocemos de cerca-, es un niño que no para de jugar con su creatividad. Se atreve, conversa con las ideas sensatas y también con las ideas desequilibradas, hasta llegar a la culminación de cada una de sus obras.

Termina lo que comienza. No se da por vencido nunca antes.

Eso es lo valioso de "Al" como escritor; su atrevimiento, su osadía y su "Odisea", que es como se titula ésta, su cuarta novela Ha publicado por muchos años en diferentes campos. El arte antíguo indio de la costa occidental se basa esencialmente en madera

argilita, con un arte indio formalista y ritualista. Las obras son de concepción monumental, la actividad artística de las tribus tlingit, comprende trabajos sobre utensilios, y la fabricación de importantes máscaras articuladas y objetos de madera, así como tejidos de lana adornados con pinturas totémicas, y su antigua tradición de talla en madera.

Indian art on the west coast is essentially based on argillite wood, with formalist and ritualistic Indian art. The works are of a monumental design, the artistic activity of the Tlingit tribes, includes work on utensils, and the manufacture of important articulated masks and wooden objects, as well as woolen fabrics adorned with totemic paintings, and its ancient tradition of carving.

Afortunadamente los actuales indios aun siguen produciendo arte. Cabe resaltar las estatuillas antropomorfas de madera que tienen algo de realismo, y presentan características diferentes en cada población. Así de importantes son las máscaras, usadas tanto en las fiestas profanas como en las ceremonias religiosas; por lo general son de madera, hueso de ballena o de cobre, y representan aves, monstruos marinos, serpientes de dos cabezas, entre otras figuras.

Los tlingit son una tribu amerindia del grupo Kolosh de las lenguas na-dené. Su nombre proviene de la palabra Tlingit que significa "pueblo". También les dicen kolosh, palabra que procede del aleutiano kalohs o kaluga. Están considerados como los máximos representantes de la cultura india del noroeste. Vivían en largas villas rodeadas de planchas de madera con crestas ornamentales y palos totémicos, que parece ser que representaban los antepasados y los distintivos sociales de sus habitantes. Eran pescadores, cazadores y recolectores, y vivían en un medio natural fértil que los proveía de alimentos en gran abundancia. Socialmente estaban divididos en dos grandes tribus: la de los cuervos y la de los águilas. Esta división social garantizaba el buen equilibrio del poder.

the word Tlingit means "People" Fortunately the present Indians are still producing art. It is important to highlight the anthropomorphic wooden statues that have some realism, and present different characteristics in each population. Thus, important are the masks, used both in profane parties and in religious ceremonies; usually made of wood, whale bone or copper, and represent birds, sea monsters, two-headed snakes, among other figures.

The Tlingit are an Amerindian tribe of the Kolosh group of the Na-denĂŠ languages. Its name comes from the word Tlingit which means "people". They are also called kolosh, word that comes from the Aleutian kalohs or kaluga. They are considered as the highest representatives of the Northwest Indian culture. They lived in long villas surrounded by wooden planks with ornamental ridges and totem sticks, which seem to represent the ancestors and social distinctives of their inhabitants. They were fishermen, hunters and gatherers, and lived in a fertile natural environment that supplied them with food in great abundance. Socially they were divided in two great tribes: the one of the ravens and the one of the eagles. This social division guaranteed the good balance of power.

Under this title, the Rietberg Museum in Zurich dedicated an exhibition to the Tlingit tribes, whose art is distinguished by a very stylized, extremely decorative and expressive language of forms.

The Tlingit are creators of an art rich in shapes and colors, owners of an amazing manufacturing technique.

The Rietberg Museum exhibition was a further attempt to publicize exceptional civilizations, virtually unknown in Europe. No doubt because these, as in the case of the culture of the natives of Alaska, are on the other side of the world.

Bajo ese título, el Museo Rietberg de Zúrich dedicó una exposición a las tribus tlingit, cuyo arte se distingue por un lenguaje de formas muy estilizado, extremadamente decorativo y expresivo.

Los tlingit son creadores de un arte rico en formas y colores, dueños de una técnica de fabricación sorprendente.

La exposición del Museo Rietberg fue un intento más por dar a conocer civilizaciones excepcionales, prácticamente desconocidas en Europa. Sin duda porque éstas, como en el caso de la cultura de los indígenas de Alaska, se encuentran del otro lado del mundo.
