PLANTING UNTREATED SWEET CORN

The biggest enemy your sweet corn seed faces in the spring is cool, wet soil. Placing seed into soil below 65º F will slow germination, giving more time for fungal diseases and insects to claim their share of your seed. You’ll get much better results in 65-75º F soil, especially with untreated sweet corn seed. Test your soil temperature about an inch down, be patient, and watch your corn spring to life.

GROWING POPCORN Growing popcorn and sweet corn in the same garden produces disappointing results for both crops because of cross pollination. SOIL REQUIREMENTS Medium to coarse textured soils warm slightly faster than fine-textured soils and should improve germination, emergence and seedling establishment. High clay content and/or poorly drained soils will weaken the root, reduce yield and increase lodging. FERTILITY A soil test will show the nutrient needs. Popcorn needs abundant amounts of nitrogen. PLANTING A soil temperature of 50-55 degrees F is necessary for best germination. SEEDING With irrigation, seed 20,000 to 27,000 plants per acre (4-6#/acre). Plant fewer for dry land. Sow the seeds 1-2” deep, spaced 6-8” apart. When 5” tall, thin to 12” apart. A series of short rows, 24-36” apart, ensure good pollination. IRRIGATION Popcorn needs 1 1/2 to 2” of water per week from either rain or irrigation. INSECT CONTROL Most, if not all, of the insects that attack field corn can also attack popcorn. HARVESTING Harvest when the husks are completely dry and the kernels are hard. Hang the ears in mesh bags in a well-ventilated area. After removing the kernels from the ears, store in an airtight container at room temperature.

SWEET CORN GENETIC TYPE COMPATIBILITY AND ISOLATION Isolation of sweet corn is essential for quality. To prevent cross pollination, separate genetic types by:

Standard Sugary (SU) *Traditional sweet corn genotype *Sugars convert to starch quickly

*At least 250’ *An effective wind break *At least 10-14 days maturity

Sugary Enhanced (SE) *SE gene improves flavor, tenderness and moisture retention over SU types *Good cool soil germination and vigor *May be planted next to a synergistic

Synergistic (SYN) *75% SE and 25% SH2 kernels *Long shelf life *Good cool-soil germination & vigor *May be planted next to an SE

Standard Supersweet (SH2) *Shrunken-2 gene raises levels of complex sugars and extends flavor *Slow conversion from sugar to starch

Field corn Ornamental corn Popcorn

Quad Sweet *Augmented supersweet *Combines tender, high moisture kernel of SE with high sugar and slow starch conversion of SH2

Smaller potatoes (golf ball size or less) can be planted whole. Make sure to plant in full sun and keep them well-covered, at least 6-8 inches deep.
