It has been my privilege to take the helm at the Whakatane Sportfishing club for the 202324 season and while challenging, it has been rewarding, with many exciting changes being made to tournaments and social events by the committee which have been an absolute pleasure to be part of. With many more of the committee’s plans still to be implemented, it is going to be another exciting year in the 24-25 season.
The Committee, Club management and dedicated volunteers have done a fantastic job of ensuring the direction of the club is steady and focused, what a great team and I can only commend everyone for the commitment and drive shown throughout the year.
As you are all aware we have been challenged with a lease renewal and the increase in flood protection required to protect Whakatane from potential flooding, this has been a significant focus for the club and for the separately formed Lease committee which included noncommittee members with appropriate expertise engaged to assist in the process of assessing the options available to the club and providing feedback to the members. This process has taken many months and while the final decision has not been made at the time of writing, we can all feel proud that the entire group has worked tirelessly to ensure we have provided the members with the best information available for them to make a decision on the club’s future.
The inclusion of the Hubbard’s Winter Tuna Tournament to our calendar has been a huge success, having a $50,000 first prize has attracted anglers from around New Zealand and we hope to continue to grow this tournament to be one of the best in the country. The Kai Ika tournament saw a significant number of new people enjoying the club and everyone had a fantastic time, the Ladies and Juniors were hits as always with the ever popular One Base
included into the Nationals seeing several boats entering both events which saw us gain some national accolades which has been missing for a few years. Guppies on the Wharf was an absolute resounding success and saw the entire Wharf area packed with families enjoying what was a beautiful day, again none of this could achieved without the dedication and drive shown by our committee.
It is wonderful to see such a dedicated group of junior anglers showing us all how it should be done with numerous NZ records, Club records and generally fantastic catches coming through the weigh station for ratification both by weight and release, really showing that our club is fully embracing the protection of the resource by allowing a many fish as possible to be left to fight another day.
The Whakatane Sport Fishing Club will also be proudly hosting the NZSFC AGM in September which will see delegates from around New Zealand converge in Whakatane for a weekend of meetings and discussions on our fishery, we will have the Anchorage bar open for members to enjoy the proceedings during the day and mingle with the delegates on Friday evening.
Our social events have seen the club alive with music and dancing, I have even been caught dancing the night away myself! It is wonderful to see so many members and guests enjoying what is the best venue in Whakatāne and may it continue for many years to come.
I personally look forward to seeing you all in the club for the 2024-25 season, enjoying the fishing, comradery and social events that is a hallmark of our club.
“If I fished only to capture fish, my fishing trips would have ended long ago.” —Zane Grey.
Tight lines and fair seas Heyden Johnston, President
Well, another year goes by and what a positive transformation there has been in our club. Fishing, finance, fellowship all spring to mind. Firstly, Tuna fishing has been so outstanding and has given the club a new lease on life during the winter season! The Hubbard’s Tuna Tournament was the best ever! Congratulations to all the winners. The generosity of the winning teams and club members was something to behold. Tragedy can sometimes bring out the best in people and I know the families of the lost fisherman at Gisborne along with their club are so indebted to our club for their generous donations.
I still can hardly believe the amazing generous sponsors we have in our club; they require the deepest respect and hopefully reciprocal trade from members. Without them we would be fishing in tinnies and off the wharf or riverbank.
The incentives to fish for the club is made up of some of the most beautiful trophies amongst New Zealand’s clubs. Also, the forward thinking of the committee made the juniors fishing day off the wharf a really memorable occasion.
The Whakatane Sportfishing Club is in good shape, we are all in very good hands from the top to the bottom. The morale is at an all-time high and it is such a pleasure to feel the warmth emanating from the club members. We still have a few hurdles in front of us re: the lease etc, so thank you. A special thanks to all staff and especially the behind-the-scenes workers who give their time freely and for giving to the committee your full support.
Please support the new committee in the same respectful manner and remember this is your club so please support it.

This tournament created by the New Zealand Sportfishing Council is the first of many to come. Open to all keen young anglers in New Zealand, this encourages the sport of fishing to continue for many years to come. Just like the Nationals, clubs are competing against each other for the grand winner on the day. There are two categories: High School & Primary School. Great effort from the kids this year, with Whakatane coming 7th overall.

The Hubbard Contracting Ltd Winter Tuna Tournament, that started three years ago as a Blue Fin Tuna competition with a few anglers with the winner takes all, has been taken to the next level this year. Over $50,000 worth of sponsored prizes saw an influx of anglers. Despite the tournament being postponed twice and to go ahead with a window of weather lasting two days, the tournament was a huge success.
276 Anglers braved the conditions to chase the elusive Southern blue fin and entries were still coming in on the night of the briefing. The Kai Ika Fish Filleting Trailer at the weigh station was also a success with the anglers.
Chatham Islands donated a trip to the winning team and as there were two teams that had the same points, being Pescatore & Tung-it All, the sponsor decided instead of a draw to do Rock, Paper, Scissors, which the packed club house enjoyed.

Whakatane Juniors in the Bay of Islands 2023 International Yellowtail Kingfish TournamentJune 2023
Team members:
-Chloee Munn
-Oliver (Ollie) Good
-Cody Bruning-Archer
-Sam Jackson
-Chaperones: Jason Good and Jamie Munn
Day One: Travel day (10 June 2023)
We travelled up to Russell from Whakatane and settled into our accommodation at the Russell Top 10 Holiday Park and got ready for the couple days of fishing ahead. After that we made our way down to the Bay of Islands Sword Fishing Club to meet our Skipper and watch the briefing. Our Skipper for the trip was Jason Reece and our Deckie was Trent Morgan. He was an interesting character. Once the briefing was finished, we made our way back to the Holiday Park for the night.
Day Two: First day fishing
We woke up bright and early, all pumped up for fishing and then hopped on the May Marie and headed out to the local known hole in the rock. It was a shotgun start, but we got to start early as the boat we were on (The May Marie) could only go 8.2 knots. As we made our way to the spot to catch some live bait, we watched as all the other boats boosted past us. Once we finally made it to the spot and we dropped our lines down, only to find that the fish weren’t biting. And that seemed to be the theme for that day. However, we did manage to catch some other species. Ollie caught a respectful Snapper that weighed in at 5.25kg. Cody managed to catch a nice John Dory too. Chloee had a long fight with what turned out to be a shark. It was good practice for us on the light line though.
Day Three: Second day fishing
With another early start, we made our way to a different spot for the day at the Cavalli Islands, in hope that we would have more luck than day two. Sam had a good fight on the 6kg line and pulled in a 14.35kg Kingfish that was only in 10 metres of water. Chloee also managed to pull in a nice Kingfish and only just missed out on the minimum length by a few centimetres. The weather was doing us justice though with some great conditions
We had our early start again and made our way back out to the Cavalli’s for the day. The crew had lots of fun catching blue kohis as live bait with lots of other boats around us. There were so many blue kohis, we could even net them straight out of the water. Once we made it to the spot, Cody hooked up to a good Kingfish. He had a good fight on the 6 kg but sadly the fish got off. Later on that day Sam managed to pull in a nice Kingfish on the 6kg that weighed in at 9.70kg. The rest of the fish decided to stop biting so we called it a day and headed back in.
It was our last early start for the International Yellowtail Competition, and we were all excited to get back out on the water. The crew all had their bacon and egg sandwiches that the Russell locals cooked up for us each day that we fished in the comp. We made our way back out to the Cavalli’s for the day with our top speed of 8.2knots. The crew were all hyped up and ready to catch some fish. When we made it to our spot, the fish were biting. Chloee, Cody, Ollie and Sam caught some nice Kingfish, but they all just missed the minimum length by a few centimetres. We gave up fishing at that spot after two and a half hours. The fish just weren’t big enough to weigh in. Our Skipper Jason took us to a different spot, and we dropped our live
bait down. However, it wasn’t Kingfish that came up - it was some decent Snapper. So, we got enough for a feed of Snapper and decided to call it a day.
The crew had 2 days before the competition prize giving. Jamie and Jason decided to take us for a better look around the Bay of Islands, so we all piled in the van and headed to Kerikeri where we went to a chocolate factory called Makana Confections. Everyone quite liked it there as we got lots of free samples to try. We drove to the Haruru falls and had a quick look at the waterfalls. Jamie and Jason also took us to the Historic Stone Store and Kemp House to have a look around. We had lunch in Paihia and then headed back to Russell for the afternoon. The crew decided to go fishing down at the wharf for the rest of the day while Jamie and Jason went on a bush walk to the lookout above Russell. Chloee caught a legal snapper off the wharf, so the team took it back to the Holiday Park and gave it to Roger Mather for his dinner.
For our final day in Russell, we all wanted to all have a look around Russell then go fishing off the wharf for the day. Chloee also made the boys go shopping with her. Throughout the trip we had all become good mates with some of the Russell kids. They came down the wharf to see what we were up to. It was good fun fishing off the wharf and we managed to catch a few fish. For the afternoon, Jason and Jamie took us for a drive around Russell so that we could have a look around and write our speech for the competition prize giving together. They also took us to have a look at the church and the “dead centre of town” also known as the cemetery. It was very interesting looking at all the bullet holes in the church. The team were all nervous to present their speech at prize giving but did a very good job. Everyone in the Club loved it. The team presented Jason and Trent with a gift to say thanks for looking after us. The overall outcome of prize giving was very great for the Whakatane Team. The team did very well and managed to come home with lots of prizes.
Sam got First place Junior Angler for having the most points with 975.041 points in total. Chloee got The Hardest Trying Junior Angler for the tournament for her hard work at fishing and putting up with all of the boys’ banter. And the team got Second place for the Overall Junior Teams. The charter boat that we were fishing on (May Marie) took out the Charter Boat with the most points category.
The Teams Highlights:
Cody:
My favourite parts of the Bay of Islands trip were meeting all the great people fishing in the comp. Even though I didn’t catch a legal fish, I still had fun catching rats on the 6kg line, and losing a couple of nice fish.
Sam:
My highlight for the trip was all the banter I had with the crew and with the Aussies on St Moritz, I heard their kangaroo really like bananas. Another highlight for me was also meeting new people from the Bay of Islands and all over the country. But of course, the best part was catching fish and taking out most points from Junior Anglers.
Chloee:
My overall highlights of this trip were getting to meet lots of very talented fishermen from all over the country and Australia. It was fun getting to play pool with the Russell kids each night and becoming good mates with them. I enjoyed learning more about light line fishing and having a look around the Bay of Islands as I had never been to that part of the country before. I also enjoyed all of the comedic banters that the team, Jason, Jamie and I had with each other while we were fishing. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to fish in this competition and represent the Whakatane Sportfishing Club. It was a very memorable trip
and the team and I have all become good mates from it.
Oliver:
My highlights for the 2023 International Yellowtail Kingfish Tournament were being able to learn some new light line techniques of rigging live baits. It was cool meeting all of the hospitable people up there, exploring the Bay, both land and sea. It was a privilege to be able to represent the Whakatane Sportfishing Club.

2023 - 2024
The historical Christmas Hams Tournament has had a facelift. Traditionally, this was all about hams and fishing from boats. This tournament under went a transformation to include a diving and a Landbased section. Vessels included jet skis and kayaks. As for the species list, this was impressive. It included all the usual species, but this time, Crayfish, Kina and Wreckfish were added to the list. This tournament was the first of its kind in New Zealand, being a 100%
sustainable tournament, i.e. nothing was wasted. The Kai Ika Filleting station was on hand to process Anglers fish with unwanted fish going out to the local community. Over $30,000 worth of sponsored prizes along with 300kg of Christmas Hams were up for grabs. Despite postponements happening a full house and full registration made this tournament a winner with 180 Anglers & divers fishing for a wide variety of prizes. Community involvement included a Kina eating competition which was a hit with the locals. As for the crayfish, this included Packhorse and Red. This Packhorse was caught by Toby Barkla and weighed a massive 6.920 kg. Many photos were taken of this fish during the tournament with questions around how it was going to be cooked. The Weigh station was kept busy over the tournament with a total of 236 fish and 380 kina weighed.
The end result: A packed clubhouse for prizegiving, with standing room only and great feedback from the anglers.

What a great tournament the Juniors had! 87 Anglers fishing from 39 boats. The weather was perfect, and the catches matched the weather. 206 fish weighed, measured and tagged. Three New Zealand records have been issued – two for the girls from the Bay of Islands and one for our own junior – Fletcher Sefton for his 6.110kg Trevally caught on 10kg Line. The big winner in the 12-16 section was Benji Thomsen with his 102.2kg Striped marlin earning him 276.22 points. Lachlan Bakalich was the winner for the little three – 11 years and under with a total weight of 6.235kg. Steve haddock on the Meagan H had the pleasure of taking the team from the Bay of Islands out and showing the best we have to offer, with great catches of yellowtail Kingfish and Trevally.

Another successful tournament. With 140 Ladies fishing from 58 Boats. And a great weather window saw the ladies having fun and catching fish, with 208 fish weighed, tagged and measured. Three striped Marlin tagged, one blue marlin weighed. The yellowfin only made a brief appearance during this tournament with three tagged and one weighed. And Albacore were absent from everyone, but Snapper and Tarakihi were abundant. The end result: judging by feedback from the ladies – a great tournament.

The NZSFC Nationals had 43 anglers fishing from 12 boats with great results. Team Game Changer and team Forever Young battled it out for the top spot in the club, with team Forever Young edging out the competition.
Whakatane was 2nd in our zone and 20th overall out of 32 clubs. Grant Moore off L.A came 1st in the Line weight Trevally section and William Gommans with his impressive flyfishing won the Kahawai Section. Not bad for a small team of boats fishing!

The One Base had 171 anglers fishing from 56 boats, including jet skis. 111 fish caught and tagged during the tournament. Notable catches from the tournament were Amanda Ryburn’s Striped marlin weighing 964kg and Kirsty Youngs tagged and released Blue Marlin. Not be out of the limelight was Peter Brodan with his impressive 12.95kg Snapper winning the Heaviest Snapper and Junior Pal Kurei with his 10.652kg Snapper. Again, the Yellowfin were elusive, but there were plenty of fish to go around.

92 brave souls were out early on Lake Rotoiti in freezing conditions, but despite the frosty start, the weather really turned on for the weekend with sunny days. At night, anglers were fortunate to witness the Aurora.
We had 29 boats, 2 kayakers and 2 jet skis, trying their luck to catch the big one. Stu & Jenny Chapman were kept busy at the weigh station on both days, but while anglers waited their turn, they were treated to bags of lollies and on the Sunday, an extra special treat of a BBQ of venison sausages.
Fish weighed and measured totalled 195, with Juniors catching 28, ladies, 25 and the men 142 fish.

With one of the best 3 day forecasts we had seen all bluefin season the excitement levels were sky high as we all gathered at the club on Thursday night for the briefing of the tournament, with the loss of 3 lives of fellow Bluefin fisherman in Gisborne earlier in the week, safety and getting home to our family’s at the end of tournament was definitely top priority for us all. It was great to see that safety message pushed at briefing and also the support shown to the Gisborne Tatapouri fishing club was unreal. Looking forward to seeing exactly how much money we all raised for our mates down the coast. With briefing over it was go time, the bigger boats in the harbour were gearing up and getting ready to leave as soon as they had enough water on the bar to do so, trailer boats were getting their last supplies and heading east, the first day was meant to be the roughest but when we woke to glassy calm conditions 15 miles off cape runaway I think it took us all by surprise. The fishing on that 1st day was a little bit hit and miss, as it generally is on the 1st day as the boats are all searching for that little hot spot all though a few calls were coming through as boats were hooking up. There was definitely a different feel to it knowing a fish with a $50k cheque could grab one of your lures at any minute.
Friday Night was a glass off, we stayed on the 1000m line off Cape Runaway, you could of mistaken it for the Waihau Bay haven with the amount of lights shining from all the boats trying their luck for a night time bite, a bonus Broadbill Swordfish took a liking to one of our dead baits we had deployed, although not much size to it , it will make great eating and an even better mount on the wall!
Saturday saw the boats spread far and wide trying to find that honey hole of Bluefin Tuna, some exploring the outskirts of chart 54 down east as far and the famous Ranfurly Banks, the weather picked up slightly with about 10 – 15 knots of wind which must have meant feeding time for the tuna as the radio was non-stop from 7am – 9am, hook ups and landed fish, double, treble and even five (5) way strikes were getting called out, it was on!
Team Tinnie House was amongst that action where they landed a beast of a tuna which went on to take the lead and claim the $50k for heaviest tuna. 119kg gilled and gutted!
Overnight Saturday, the boats were staying as far east as Hicks Bay and as far west as White Island, as the Tauranga launches made their way back to port. We woke at 5am and left Hicks Bay hoping to get into some hot action northwest of Ranfurly, not to be for us unfortunately but some boats had some last-minute action meaning a quick trip back to the weigh station before the 4pm cut off where they could enjoy a beer and sausage sizzle & watch Wyatt & John process their catch in the Kia Ika Trailer! then
back to the club for the prizegiving at 7pm where over $85,000 in cash was given away plus other prizes. The $50k for the heaviest fish has to be the biggest tuna prize ever in New Zealand? Was very cool to watch and be a part of.
All in all, a fantastic tournament we had with beautiful conditions, thanks to the Whakatane Sportfishing Club and all of the volunteers and helpers. Bring on the next one! Did anyone remember Jason saying on stage the HUBBARD 100????

With our Juniors smashing New Zealand Records this year, it is only fitting that we give them a special section to show how proud we are of their achievements. 2023 - 2024
New Zealand Record
2023 - 2024
Day 1
We had an early start so we could get to briefing in Russel and arrived at Romey and Keith’s place at 7am with the news that our deckie had done a runner and the skipper had one leg and once he climbed up to the fly bridge he couldn’t get back down so he was hoping we knew what we were doing! Let the fun begin!! We arrived in Russel for briefing early afternoon after a good drive up.
The weather was bad so day 2 was called as the lay day but we met up with our skipper Trevor on his AMAZING boat Family Jewels, probably the flashest boat I have ever seen!!... and he had roped in another deckie Terry. We spent the morning going over knots with Terry and learning some tips
and tricks. Terry was awesome and knew his stuff. It sounded like a good challenge trying to land one of these kingis on 6kg line, we couldn’t wait to get on the water.
Headed out in rough snotty conditions. The live bait were easy going, not so much the kingis. Hooked up around midday, played it for around half an hour but lost it to the reef. What a mission. Went back, had a yum feed at the club.
Absolutely mint weather. Had some livies left over from day 3 and I hooked up again. It was a 40 minute fight, and definitely a challenge to reel in, but we landed one! Not a monster but at least Family Jewels now had some points on the board! Hudson also caught a nice snapper.
More primo weather. Had fun catching some of the biggest live baits our deckie and skipper had ever seen but obviously size doesn’t matter, we caught no kingis!. Kyle got a bite but didn’t turn in to much.
Another tough day on the water. The weather had packed it in again. Tried a different method of catching kingis, dropping down ledger rigs, but again, nothing taken. Luckily for us, there was no fish at all caught from any juniors for that day so that night at prize giving my name got drawn out for heaviest kingi of the day junior male and heaviest kingi overall for the day and I won an awesome rod and reel a few other bits and bobs to share with the team.
Day off today, hung around the camp and spent some time down at the wharf. It was prize giving night, no big prizes for any fish but we all came away with some pretty cool prizes for most improved fisherman and hardest working fisherman!! We also sold tickets for the 3L Jim Beam bottle and bought a couple for our skipper and deckie and funny enough, our deckie won it! He was stoked!! A good way to thank him.
Home time. Up early and on the road but going nowhere as the ferry had broken down. So 10 hours later we arrived home.
I want to say a massive thank you first and foremost to Jeff Bakalich and the team on board JJ who have taken me under their wing for the Junior Tournament since I was about 9 years old and managed to help me land a last minute marlin to get me on the Bay of Island Team. Next up thanks so much for Romey and Keith for jumping in as mum and dad and taking us three boys up. You were both awesome and appreciate all you did for us. Keith you were a champ with the sea sickness on those rough days! Sorry for keeping you up on the last
night with our chat!! Last but definitely not least, our skipper Trevor and deckie Terry who volunteered their boat and time and gave us an amazing trip. So grateful for their generosity and knowledge. I had great yarns with Trevor up in the flybridge and learnt so much off Terry and Trevor and hope to get back up there to learn some more from them. Anyone got a spare mill as Trevor is selling his boat and it is wicked!! Ill be your deckie!!
Thanks Whakatane Sport Fishing Club and Bay of Islands Swordfish Club for getting us there and everyone who has supported us through raffles and donations.
What an amazing trip, a once in a lifetime experience…….and a week off school!!!
