November 18, 2023 Greetings members of Alpha Zeta Chapter of Baltimore, MDWhat a blessed privilege to greet you as the 26th International President and CEO of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority IncorporatedI would like to extend special acknowledgements to Regional Director the Honorable Judge Beverly S. Tatham, State Director Lisa Simpson Smith and your Chapter President Nicole V. Hart who are basking in great joy on this grand occasion of celebrating your Centennial Celebration with your themed activities of Continuing the Legacy of Finer: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.

The Alpha Zeta Chapter has the unique honor of being the first Graduate Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. under the leadership of five influential young ladies, Sorors Iradelle Bond Williams, Nellie A. Buchanan, Florence Purviance, Ethel Thompson, and Jeanette Johnson Moore (Laws). What an added blessing of having Triumphant Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful one of the Sorority’s Five Founders and the Sorority’s Second National President. who was a long-time Baltimore Area resident, educator in the Anne Arundel Public School System, and active life-member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter.

Your extensive service in the community serves as an opportunity for the Sisterhood to expand Zeta’s footprint through impactful programs and initiatives that promote education, health and raise awareness around important issues facing women today. I’m so excited to unveil our programmatic focus - The Extraordinary Power of S.H.E. - an opportunity for Zetas worldwide to be intentional about social, health and economic justice for women at home and abroad. By engaging in these essential conversations and sitting at tables where change is effectuated around these issues, sorority members will empower women and build stronger communities.

Moreover, the Chapter regards itself as a vehicle for promoting the growth and development of the individual, not only in sound scholarship, but also in human values as well throughout many initiatives that are crucial in the communities today. While you continue to uphold our founding principles as you sponsor, support and advises four undergraduate chapters: Gamma – Morgan State University; Nu Gamma – Coppin State University; Theta Eta – University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Epsilon Rho – Sojourner Douglas College. No organization can meet the community’s needs without support and assistance, group of ladies, known as the Friends of Zeta – the Amicae of Greater Baltimore have strived to assist the Alpha Zeta Chapter achieve its goals.

We as Zetas, value our Amicae and embraces the concept that all women, no matter their educational level, can reach their full potential in all areas of their lives to create and achieve unlimited opportunities.

November 18, 2023 Greetings Sorors, Brothers, Friends, and Guests I extend my warmest greetings to each of you as we gather for the highly anticipated celebration of the first graduate chapter in Zeta, the historic Alpha Zeta Chapter. It is with great pleasure that I address you as Zeta’s International First Anti President, and as the immediate Past Atlantic Regional Director, and I am filled with joy knowing that we have been blessed to gather in honor of this esteemed chapter.

Zeta’s membership is our most precious asset. It is through the dedication of our members that we are able to make a lasting impact in our communities. There is no greater example of our commitment to service than the home chapter of Triumphant Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful and the many of Zeta legends that have called Alpha Zeta Chapter home.

Greetings Sisters, Brothers, Family, and Friends: With esteemed pleasure, I greet you as the 13th Maryland State Director, where we are Moving Maryland with Momentum! On behalf of the Zetas, Amicae, Youth Auxiliaries, and Zeta Male Network throughout the State of Maryland, we congratulate Alpha Zeta Chapter on a momentous milestone and the distinct honor of achieving centennial status!

Tonight’s celebration is three-fold: the first is an opportunity to honor the five visionary women who sought to promote the ideals of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood in the greater Baltimore community and establish the FIRST graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The second is to acknowledge and celebrate all of the accomplishments that Alpha Zeta has achieved as a result of the services that you have provided to the community. These include the establishment of Youth Auxiliaries, scholarship offerings through the Myrtle Tyler Faithful Foundation, and your service to seniors through the Zeta Center for Healthy and Active Aging. The third is that God continues to bless Alpha Zeta with continued achievements for another 100 years of impact to the community.

To Madam President Nicole Hart, members of the Executive Board, and Sorors of Alpha Zeta Chapter, your dedication to Zeta and the Baltimore City community is the reason for this celebration. I would be remiss if I did not thank the Alpha Zeta Centennial Committee and everyone who played a part in implementing an epic week of worship, service, and celebrations!

On November 16, 2023, Alpha Zeta celebrated 100 years of outstanding service within our beloved sorority and Baltimore City. The State of Maryland is exceptionally proud of Alpha Zeta and the remarkable accomplishments the chapter has achieved since 1923. We are MOST proud that one of our Triumphant Founders, Soror Myrtle Tyler Faithful, and our 4th National President, Soror Nellie Buchanan, called Maryland and Alpha Zeta their home.

As the first graduate chapter in our illustrious organization we work relentlessly to provide service while executing our founding principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood.

We are standing strong on the shoulders of the work done by our chartering Sorors.

They were visionary leaders and have continued that legacy. We are the home to current and past state, regional and national officers; providers of over $150,000 in scholarships to Baltimore high school students; a Zeta Youth Auxiliary program where we offer mentoring and development to young ladies at every stage of their life, and the Amicae Auxiliary who are our dedicated and awesome friends.

The leadership in Alpha Zeta is responsible for the lasting imprint Zeta has within Baltimore evidenced by the Zeta Center for Healthy & Active Aging located in the community of Park Heights which is notably known as the “Best in the City of Baltimore”. This center is a model of how older adults can thrive and age in place with the programming, activities and resources that are provided. We additionally provide a wealth of resources to our adopted school, Calvin A. Rodwell Elementary/Middle School by offering assistance to students with not only their reading skills and testing but with gifts of love to them and their families during various holiday seasons and support to the teaching staff as well.

Alpha Zeta Chapter is not only first graduate chapter, but has been the epitome of a model to be followed.

As we invest in our membership we continuously charge ourselves with how we can continuously grow in our efforts to ensure the ultimate impact. After 100 years of FINER, we are steadfast in upholding our oath of using our time, talent and finances in our efforts to help others excel.

Greetings Sorors, Distinguished Guests, Friends, and Family, What a true honor and privilege it is to extend Alpha Zeta Chapter, a happy and heartfelt “Happy Centennial Anniversary!” as the Centennial Committee Chair of this groundbreaking Chapter. I am so thankful for the opportunity to gather with you all as we culminate our week of Centennial activities with such a wonderful celebration. I’m grateful to have had the support of our Chapter President, Sub-Committee Chairwomen, the Centennial Committee, our Chapter, and our Community Partners, as well as friends and family in this amazing journey – well done!

There are many milestones in the life of an organization that one would want to make sure you stop and take in. We live in a world that is constantly changing and at a much faster pace now than ever before.

Looking back over the last 100 years and seeing the growth of Alpha Zeta Chapter and the positive impact it has had on the City of Baltimore and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. as whole, one can recognize it is not a small feat and it is indeed a milestone to celebrate. Finding yourself in the position to live out the dreams, hopes and desires of our Chartering Sorors, while also knowing that “the work is not yet done,” encourages you to push forward, continuing to give your best and carry on the great legacy of FINER that was started a century ago.

While I was not inducted into this illustrious and FINER Organization through Alpha Zeta Chapter, I have been nurtured and poured into, pruned, and developed with the hands and hearts of my Alpha Zeta Sorors and for that I am truly grateful. Serving in the capacity of Centennial Committee Chair was not a path I would have ever predicted for myself upon becoming a member of this great Chapter, but I’m blessed for the opportunity to provide me to continue to serve Alpha Zeta and our Community. I am forever grateful for the true display of Sisterhood and Finer Woman that my Sorors displayed as we came together on this journey to Centennial. This is not something that could have ever been accomplished by anyone person and I am indebted to each of you for answering call (or text), supporting, encouraging, offering guidance, giving of your time and money, and putting your talents/resources/networks to work for this effort – most importantly, for being my Sisters.

We know the work is not done, but as we take a moment to celebrate these last 100 years and recharge, let us look forward and continue to move forward in upholding the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). The work is not done, Sorors, as we put hand to plow, I’m grateful to walk step-in-step with each of you as we exemplify Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.

As we work towards the next milestone, let us continue the legacy of FINER, yesterday, today, and forever!

Alpha Zeta A History

It was in the early 1920’s that Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority received its charter of organization. Members included a group of women who convinced the President of Morgan State College, Reverend John O. Spencer that they would be able to contribute more meaningfully to the expansion program of Morgan College if they could function as an organization on the campus. This first effort culminated in setting up Gamma Chapter which has the distinction of being the first chapter of a Greek letter sorority on Morgan’s campus.

Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was established in November 1923. The planning and execution of this new venture took place in the home of Iradelle Bond Williams and the chapter became the first graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc with members Iradelle B. Williams, Nellie A. Buchanan, Mary Laws, Alice Taylor, Bernice Taylor, Ethel Cummings Hodges, Ethel Taylor Payne, Ethel Thompson, May Williams Fortune, Florence Purviance, Marian Webb, O’Goldia Smith, Alice Wilson, Alma Kelly, Jeanette Johnson Moore, Jeanette Laws and others. Soror Jeanette Johnson Moore became the first Basileus and Soror Nellie A. Buchanan went on to serve as the fourth National Basileus on Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Since, Alpha Zeta Chapter members have served on the national, regional and state levels of the sorority.

Then and now, Alpha Zeta Chapter regards itself as an instrument in promoting growth and development individual inBaltimore, not only by way of academic scholarships, but also in fundamental humanistic values. Over the years, Alpha Zeta’s involvement includes such programs and projects as: The Prevention and Control of Juvenile Delinquency; Parent Consultation Services; Foster Home Care; and, Adopt-aChild in conjunction with the Department of Social Services; cultural arts and literacy presentations; scholarship awards to area high school graduates; revolving loan funds at Morgan State University and Coppin State University; sponsorship and guidance of elementary and secondary youth groups; youth service groups; managing 2 Stork’s Nests, an incentive birth defects prevention program, in partnership with the March of Dimes Foundation, to encourage expectant mothers to seek prenatal care; Zeta C.A.R.E. programs on the continent of Africa, as well as tutoring, and cultural enrichment activities.

Alpha Zeta’s Myrtle Tyler Faithful Foundation, Inc., a 501(c) (3) organization, was established to encourage tax deductible gifts to facilitate the awarding of scholarships to gifted high school graduates.

In addition to the day-to-day operations of Alpha Zeta Chapter, we currently sponsor three undergraduate chapters: Gamma at Morgan State University, Nu Gamma at Coppin State University, and Theta Eta at University of Maryland, Baltimore County as well as our Auxiliaries.

Other programs and organizations supported by Alpha Zeta Chapter are: The Afro-American’s Mrs. Santa, Maryland State Food Bank Fund, Mrs. Bea Gaddy’s Food Kitchen, The City’s Fuel Fund Project, The American Heart Association, The United Negro College Fund, The Baltimore’s Women’s Fair, The Y.W.C.A.’s Capital Campaign, The Maryland League of Women’s Club, The National Council of Negro Women, Friends of Morgan, N.A.A.C.P. Life Membership, N.A.A.C.P.’s Project-”Back to School-Stay in School”.

Special affiliated organizations to Alpha Zeta include: (1) Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated Official Brothers of Zetas; (2) the Amicae of Greater Baltimore - Friends of Zeta committed to servicesponsored by Alpha Zeta; (3) the Archonettes - secondary school girls’ program, sponsored and guided by Alpha Zeta; (4) the Amicettes - elementary school girls’ program and; (5) the Pearlettes - pre-school and primary school girls’ program sponsored and guided by Alpha Zeta. We continue to implement our sorority’s service initiative Zetas Helping Other People to Excel (ZHOPE), via many way including but not limited to: sponsoring The Zeta Healthy Aging Partnership (ZHAP), providing suits and shoes for the “Dress for Success Program” for homeless women; presenting annually Undergraduate Scholarships; participating in voter registration and education; annually providing workers and walkers for the March 4 Babies, conducting and participating in breast cancer awareness; as well as providing information and education on Prematurity Awareness Sunday, in cooperation with the March of Dimes. Our International ZHOPE projects include purchasing a well in Ghana, West Africa and adopting the Baphamule Orphanage in South Africa.

To honor Founder Faithful, the Chapter raised funds to have the wax image of Founder Myrtle Tyler Faithful created and installed at the Great Blacks in Wax Museum, in Baltimore, Maryland, which can still be seen today. Additionally, we released the Art Project, “Zetarations,” which is an original work of art created by Baltimore artist, Larry “Poncho” Brown. The limited edition “Zetarations” is sold to raise endowment funds for the MTFF scholarship fund.

Finally, On June 5, 2008, Alpha Zeta Chapter broke ground for its $2.2 million Zeta Center for Healthy and Active Aging, located in the Park Heights area of Baltimore City, where there is great impoverishment and many older adults. Since it’s opening, the Zeta Center has hosted daily programs for older adults as well as meeting hosting by local government. Alpha Zeta Chapter continues to reinvent itself to meet the needs of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority as well as Baltimore.

A FEW ZETA SERVICE HIGHLIGHTS: Multiple Year Chair FWO; Multi Year Chair Annual Dance Committee; 2nd Vice President; 1st MTFF Advisory Chair; Multi Year MTFF Board Member; Twice Nu Gamma On-Campus Advisor; Established Just Say No To Drugs Clubs in BCPS with Alpha Zeta as co-sponsor; initiated AZ as co-sponsor of first then Annual MD State Drug Conference thru 2000; Introduced and led AZ's City-Wide Drug Forum with City State’s Attorney 1989-1996; AZ’s Trainer and Motivational Speaker through out City and State; Zeta State SAP Coordinator; Regional Project Zeta Coordinator; National Project Zeta Collegiate Program Director…the national USDE-FIPSE Grant, first awarded to any sorority; national trainer and motivational speaker in seven of national regions; Plenary speaker and conference-wide trainer 2003 for the first ZOL Conference.

Soror Simon wrote and implemented grants for AZ community service programming beginning in 2000 with $15,00.00 grant awarded to Storks' Nest and since as Founding Director of Z-DAP, Z-HAP and Voices of Z-HAP--yearly grants for operations and programming 2009 – 2019. Her service continues as advocate for older adults as assets. Now leading a national campaign to declare that terminology matters, let’s vow to stop using diminishing terms like Seniors, Seasoned.

What is a Civil Engineer?

A civil engineer designs and builds infrastructure including roads, bridges, dams, water & sewer treatment systems, underground utilities, and site development for buildings. In addition, they plan and create structures that cater to public needs in a variety of areas, including transportation, geotechnical, coastal waterways, stormwater management and environmental engineering.

To succeed, civil engineers should be detail-oriented individuals with strong mathematical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. They should also excel at team leadership and communication.
