Welcome to Chicago, Sisters! Our Convention theme, “Reaching Magnificent Milestones”, is a wonderful ref lection of our host city. Did you know that Chicago is the home to the world’s first skyscraper built in 1885? Or, that the first Ferris wheel made its debut in Chicago at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition? The first all-color TV station debuted in Chicago, and the Chicago Cultural Center, the first free municipal cultural center in the U.S., is home to the world’s largest stained glass Tiffany dome. Chicago has so many firsts and fantastic sites – too many to name in this letter! I encourage you to use your free time to explore this wonderful city and take in all it has to offer. Consider asking a Sister you’ve just met to join you so you can create some new memories together! Just like Chicago, we have our own milestones to celebrate, and new milestones we’ll accomplish together during this time. We’ll conduct the business of Alpha Xi Delta at the National Chapter Meeting, and we’ll be inspired by the accomplishments of our chapters and associations at the Awards Celebration. We’ll be motivated to tell our stories, and the story of Alpha Xi Delta, by Kindra Hall, our general session speaker. We’ll learn about new developments in many different areas of the Fraternity through educational sessions. As we round out our time together at the Rose Banquet, we’ll celebrate as the 2017-2019 National Council is installed, and we’ll kick-off a new biennium that will hold special significance – our 125th anniversary! My hope is that you’ll take advantage of everything National Convention has to offer. Introduce yourself to new Sisters, be an active participant during educational sessions and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I know you’ll leave this experience with a renewed sense of pride in Alpha Xi Delta, and I look forward to celebrating our magnificent milestones with you. Thank you for being with us, and I can’t wait to meet you!

Loyally,

Michele Herbst Evink Alpha Xi Delta National President

Alpha xi delta shining stars galaxxI Where the sky’s the limit!

Shining Stars are back by popular demand! Shining Stars are not limited to Convention attendees, everyone can join us in the celebration! Honor the Sisters and friends in your life who have inspired you to realize your potential. Shining Stars is an opportunity for everyone to get involved whether or not you or your honorees are attending Convention. Through the purchase of $10 stars, you are joining together to support the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation in our mission to support the Fraternity’s finest educational and leadership development programming.

How it Works

Why the Shining Star?

For just $10 per star, you can give a Shining Star in honor, celebration or memory of someone. All honorees will receive an email following Convention to let them know you’ve donated to the Foundation in their honor. Their name will also be displayed in the Shining Star GalaxXi at National Convention. If your honoree is attending Convention, she will receive a Shining Star appliqué sticker to display on her name badge. Shining Stars can be purchased online and at the Foundation desk during Convention.

Questions? Visit the Foundation desk by registration!

The Shining Star fundraiser is a great Alpha Xi Delta Foundation tradition. At Alpha Xi Delta’s 2007 National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, the Foundation introduced it as an opportunity to show gratitude and recognize inspiring Sisters and Friends of Xi (FOXs) while supporting the Alpha Xi Delta Foundation. Because of your gifts, the Foundation is able to fulfill her mission of supporting the Fraternity’s educational and leadership development programming; providing and continuing to expand scholarships, grants and membersupport funds; and encouraging philanthropy. Your support of the Foundation is important to ensure the Alpha Xi Delta experience you love is strong today and tomorrow.

the Five Essential Elements of

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is about the combination of our love for what we do each day, the quality of our relationships, the security of our finances, the vibrancy of our physical health and the pride we take in what we have contributed to our communities. Most importantly, it’s about how those five elements interact. While 66% of people are doing well in at least one of these areas, just 7% are thriving in all five. If we’re struggling in any one of these domains, it damages our wellbeing and wears on our daily life. When we strengthen our wellbeing in any of these areas, we will have better days, months and decades. These five elements are the currency of a life that matters. They do not include every nuance of what’s important in life, but they do represent five broad categories that are essential to most people. All of our Convention programming is categorized around these five essential elements of wellbeing: Purpose, Social, Financial, Physical and Community. Each educational session is associated with an element of wellbeing, which can be found in the upper right and left hand corners of the session description pages. A Clear Vision of Life: The Wellbeing Program is an educational program specifically designed for Alpha Xi Delta alumnae. Based on the book, “Wellbeing: The Five Essential Elements” by Tom Rath and Jim Harter, the program offers “challenges” related to the five elements of wellbeing: Career, Social, Financial, Physical and Community. For more information about this program, log in to Exclusively Xi or visit

www.alphaxidelta.org.

- 10 -

Purpose Wellbeing is arguably the most essential of the five elements. At a fundamental level, we all need something to do, and ideally something to look forward to, when we wake up every day. What you spend your time doing each day shapes your identity, whether you are a student, parent, volunteer, retiree or have a more conventional job. Gallup’s research reveals that if you don’t have the opportunity to regularly do something you enjoy, the odds of your having high wellbeing in other areas diminish rapidly.

Financial Wellbeing is about effectively managing your economic life. People with high Financial Wellbeing manage their personal finances well and spend their money wisely. They buy experiences instead of just material possessions, and they give to others instead of always spending on themselves. At a basic level, they are satisfied with their overall standard of living. Their successful strategies result in financial security, which eliminates daily stress and worry caused by debt. This financial security allows them to do what they want to do when they want to do it. They have the freedom to spend more time with the people they like to be around. Managing your finances well allows you to do what you want to do when you want to do it.

Physical Wellbeing is about having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis. People with high Physical Wellbeing manage their health well. They exercise regularly, and as a result, they feel better. They make good dietary choices, which keeps their energy high throughout the day and sharpens their thinking. They get enough sleep to process what they have learned the day before and to get a good start on the next day. Because of their healthy lifestyle, they are usually able to do all the things people their age would normally do. When they wake up well-rested each day, they look better, feel better and have more energy.

Community Wellbeing is about the sense of engagement you have with the area where you live. People with high Community Wellbeing feel safe and secure where they live. They take pride in their community and feel that it’s headed in the right direction. This often results in their wanting to give back and make a lasting contribution to society. These people have identified the areas where they can contribute based on their own strengths and passions, and they tell others about these interests to connect with the right groups and causes. Their contributions to the community may start small, but over time, they lead to more involvement and have a profound impact on the community in which they live. These efforts are what create communities we cannot imagine living without.

Social Wellbeing is about having strong relationships and love in your life. People with high Social Wellbeing have several close relationships that help them achieve, enjoy life and be healthy. They are surrounded by people who encourage their development and growth, accept them for who they are and treat them with respect. They deliberately spend time investing in the networks that surround them.

Educational Sessions | 2:00 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. | Thursday, July 6th "Those Seniors",

Checking the Checked Out Back In

Belmont | Audience: Collegians and Advisors Once senior year hits members often “check out” or become sick, with a condition called “senioritis”. Those seniors, the ones who sit in the back of the chapter room, if they even show up to the meeting, are the members we are talking about. Join us as we explore strategic tactics Alpha Xi Delta leadership can implement to engage seniors, ensuring they remain committed until the end of their collegiate membership and transition into active alumnae. Carrie Loveless, Graduate Assistant at the University of Missisippi and Specialist for the Iota Chapter at West Virginia University Lindsay Ollis, Graduate Assistant at Auburn University and Membership Advisor, Zeta Chi Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Wilimington If It's Tradition, It's Probably Hazing

Denver | Audience: Collegians and Advisors When people hear the word “hazing,” their minds jump to the worst possible hazing activities they’ve seen in the news or on campus. While those are wildly inappropriate, there are many other ways that hazing can take form. Hazing practices slide on a continuum – but one end is no worse than the other. This session will explore many types of hazing practices and how what could be considered “tradition” is in fact, hazing. Courtney Hankins Fluty, Director of Member Services MeDia & Mediums:

Be More Than Mediocre

Has your association’s social media engagement left much to be desired? Learn about all the available resources and discuss what’s working, what’s not and leave with a plan to be more than mediocre! Peggy Dickerhoff Coyne, National Alumnae Director Sarah Alice Keiser, Lifetime Engagement Manager
