Late fall is a natural time for reflection. The semester is well underway, Founders Day is near, and many of us take a moment to pause before the rush of the holiday season. It is a chance to look at what we have accomplished, what we are building and how we can continue to live out the Cardinal Principles in meaningful ways.
This fall, our newest members are taking on a challenge that does just that. The 2025 Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honoree APO’s Centennial Legacy asks new members to explore their chapter’s history, identify what makes their chapter unique, and design a project that celebrates and strengthens that story. More than an academic exercise, this is an opportunity to connect deeply with our fraternity’s values, to lead with creativity and to leave a mark that will inspire others for years to come.
What I love most about this challenge is that it calls every member new or seasoned — to think about their role in shaping the future of Alpha Phi Omega. Every project created this fall will reflect the traditions, friendships and service that define a chapter. Together, these efforts will showcase the richness of our fraternity’s story across the nation.
Through my travels and conversations with students, alumni and volunteers, I continue to be inspired by the ways our members seize opportunities to serve, grow and lead. From small acts of kindness to large-scale service events, from mentoring younger members to building lifelong friendships, APO’s impact is felt in countless ways. These moments are the heartbeat of our organization, and they are what will sustain us long into the future.
As Founders Day approaches, I encourage each of you to take a moment to reflect: How do you honor your chapter’s story? What will you contribute that builds upon the legacy you’ve inherited? The answers may look different for each of us; however, together they shape the direction of the second century of APO.
Thank you for the work you are doing to carry our principles into your communities every day. I look forward to seeing the creativity and leadership this pledge class challenge inspires.

Saving Lives Through Service
Passion for service is something Alpha Phi Omega inspires in our leaders across the nation. Passion led two Alpha Phi Omega members, Brothers Meredith Hecht, Epsilon Mu ’27, and Olivia Mahoney, Gamma Upsilon ’26, to participate in the Gift of Life’s Campus Ambassador Retreat hosted at their headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida, this past July.
The Gift of Life Campus Ambassador Program is a student leadership initiative that trains undergraduates to run donor recruitment drives on their campuses, adding young, healthy individuals to the stem cell and marrow registry.
Both members got to experience firsthand how their work as campus ambassadors is making an impact across the nation. Brothers Hecht and Mahoney got to tour the headquarters, and meet with team members from every department of Gift of Life.
Manager of Strategic Partnerships at Gift of Life, Traci Ackerman, said this program enhances participants’ marketing and communications skills to aid members in their efforts to host donor recruitment drives on their campuses. Through this training, Meredith and Olivia have deepened their understanding of Gift of Life’s mission and helped them fulfill it through inspiring others to participate and donate to the Gift of Life registry.
“Working with Gift of Life has strengthened my passion for service,” Meredith said. “The Campus Ambassador Retreat allowed me to see the impact of my service in action.”
Both members found the retreat inspiring and gained further knowledge on how to create a bigger impact on their campuses.
“Gift of Life became a passion of mine through APO at a time when I was nearing the end of my most involved semesters,” Olivia said. “By being a campus ambassador in my senior year, I am able to still find the joy in doing service and philanthropy through organizations I am very passionate about ”

APO Wellness Program
Why Uninsured Benefits Are a Game Changer
Alpha Phi Omega understands that serving others begins with caring for ourselves. Therefore, we’re committed to providing programs that support the physical, emotional and mental well-being of our members. That’s why we have partnered with New Benefits to offer a wellness program.
So many of us today are facing some unfortunate health or mental health challenges with insufficient or no insurance, adding to the stress of being able to take care of ourselves, which can feel impossible. For millions of Americans, this is a daily reality; however, it doesn’t have to be especially for you as part of the Alpha Phi Omega community that makes members’ well-being a priority for you and your loved ones.
Alpha Phi Omega added a wellness program of uninsured benefits: The APO Wellness Program. Uninsured benefits are more than just a perk; they provide peace of mind regardless of your insurance status
WHAT THE APO WELLNESS PROGRAM OFFERS OUR MEMBERS

A Look Back at Chapter Presidents Academy
“What great leaders have in common is that each truly knows his or her strengths –and can call on the right strength at the right time.” - Don Clifton (1924-2003)
With Leadership as one of Alpha Phi Omega’s Cardinal Principles, it is among our top priorities to provide our emerging leaders with transformative experiences that enhance their skills, create strategies and address some of the most pressing challenges our chapters are facing.
The 2025 Chapter Presidents Academy was held July 25-27, 2025, on the Georgia Institute of Technology campus, where chapter leaders from across the country came together to strengthen their leadership skills and positively impact their chapters as a result.
Officers who attended first took the Gallup CliftonStrengths assessment and utilized the comprehensive CliftonStrengths for Leaders Report made available to them through APO’s

new partnership with Gallup. This nationally recognized CliftonStrengths for Leaders program focuses on growth through the development of one’s natural strengths rather than attempting to fix perceived weaknesses.

Officers used the detailed report to reflect on and better understand their unique strengths, exploring how they can maximize these talents to become stronger, more effective leaders who strengthen their chapters.
Throughout the event, members tackled topics including strategy and implementation, leading through deepened relationships and communication, and recruitment and retention, all while applying insights from their personalized strengths assessments. These leadership sessions created opportunities for self-reflection and helped attendees visualize their strengths and promote self-growth.
Brother Rebecca George, president of Alpha Gamma Kappa Chapter at Southwestern University, attended this year’s Chapter Presidents Academy at the encouragement of her predecessor. Brother George said she joined APO due to the Fraternity’s great focus on volunteer work as well as the opportunities for leadership growth. “I wasn’t completely clueless going into this job [as president], and I knew that hearing from other presidents about things that they’re doing and implementing would have been really helpful,” Brother George said. “I wanted to have a lot of different perspectives before I got into this presidency.”
She also said that by getting to meet with other chapter officers and presidents, she gained new ways to attract potential new members and create fun ways to keep members engaged with the chapter as a whole.
Through the Chapter Presidents Academy and the exploration of CliftonStrengths for Leaders, she realized that what she perceived about her strengths weren’t as accurate as she thought. The weekend helped her to see where her strengths truly were and explore them more from a leadership lens.
With her new knowledge and a stronger understanding of her strengths, Brother George hopes to improve Alpha Gamma Kappa Chapter’s recruitment efforts, increase their social media presence and become more interactive with organizations on campus.
Through these trainings, 51 Alpha Phi Omega members from 47 unique chapters were able to transform their ideas into an action plan and identify possible solutions to some of their biggest challenges as leaders. These plans set the course for chapters and created lasting legacies for their chapter officers. Attendees also created meaningful connections with the other officers they met and continued to connect and collaborate.
Events like the Chapter Presidents Academy would not be possible without the support of Alpha Phi Omega’s donors and volunteers. We would like to thank everyone who donated, organized and participated in the function of this event and those to follow.
Do you also want to discover how your unique talents can be channeled into meaningful service and effective leadership? Are you looking to build confidence in your leadership abilities and expand your impact in your community? Then consider CliftonStrengths for Leaders. APO has partnered with Gallup to offer this program at a discounted rate to all members — whether you’re a student seeking chapter-based training and group strength insights, or an alumnus wanting to develop deeper self-understanding and enhance your lifelong leadership in service to humanity. 2025 Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honoree:
Throughout Alpha Phi Omega’s remarkable history, we have built a legacy of service and brotherhood and have continually shown that we are stronger together than we are apart.
That legacy inspired this year’s Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honoree: APO’s Centennial Legacy. This honoree is based on the incredible legacy that our members have left, are continuing to leave and the legacy of past Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honorees. It is a reminder that every distinguished member of APO began as a pledge or new member, demonstrating the transformative power of the Cardinal Principles and the lasting legacy of APO.
FROM NEW MEMBERS TO LEGACY BUILDERS: THE CENTENNIAL CONNECTION
The Fraternity’s most distinguished leaders began their journeys as nervous new members, uncertain of their potential yet committed to service. Brother Frank Reed Horton, a WWI veteran back in the U.S. pursuing his degree at Lafayette College, became APO’s founding visionary. LTC Lucius E. Young
Journey through decades of Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honorees who inspired new member classes to contribute significantly to their communities, and grow into distinguished members and leaders.
co-founded Zeta Phi Chapter at Howard University as an undergraduate and rose to an exceptional career serving our country and, eventually, became APO’s first Black National President. Earle M. Herbert initiated Chi Chapter at the University of California, Los Angeles, became chapter president the next year and went on to be foundational in APO’s international growth to the Philippines. Maura Harty joined Mu Alpha Chapter at Georgetown University the spring of her freshman year, and went on to become an international diplomat, serving as a foreign service officer for 27 years. Philip Pfeffer pledged as a result of his relationship with Scouting and went on to help build billion-dollar enterprises guided by APO principles. The list of distinguished leaders goes on and on with a common thread that each began where today’s Centennial New Member Class begins — with a simple desire to serve and the courage to take that first step into brotherhood.
These luminaries didn’t emerge fully formed as leaders; they were shaped, challenged and inspired by their APO experience, just as you were during your own journey through the Fraternity. They learned

“As I have said many times previously, the APO endeavors to develop leadership, to promote friendship and to provide services to humanity, and to further the freedom that is our national, educational, and intellectual heritage – all those virtues which are dear to the heart of American Scout.”
James A. Lovell, Jr., Beta Theta ‘47
Leadership through chapter roles, developed Friendship and lifelong bonds, and practiced Service through countless projects that started small and taught them to think big.
Whether you served as a chapter officer, organized a single service project, mentored a new member or lived the Cardinal Principles in your daily life and professional practice, you, too, have contributed to APO’s Centennial Legacy. Our members — from the most celebrated namesake honorees to every brother who has worn the pledge pin — are the individual strands that together weave the rich fabric of our fraternity’s history. Your service, your leadership, your friendship has strengthened that fabric and prepared it to support the next century of brothers who will follow in your footsteps.
THE CENTENNIAL NEW MEMBER CLASS: ARCHITECTS OF APO’S SECOND CENTURY
As we celebrate 100 years of Leadership, Friendship and Service, the Fall 2025 Centennial New Member Class stands at the threshold of APO’s second century. These soon-to-be brothers represent more than just a pledge
or new member class — they are the foundation upon which APO’s next 100 years will be built. The students we recruit today, mentor through their APO experience and initiate into our brotherhood will become the next era of excellence in Alpha Phi Omega. Their fresh perspectives, innovative ideas and commitment to service will shape how APO addresses the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. From natural disasters to social justice, from technological advancement to global connectivity, these new members will lead APO’s response to an evolving world while staying true to our timeless Cardinal Principles.
The Centennial New Member Class will inherit the legacy of every Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honoree who came before them. They will carry forward the pioneering spirit of H. Roe Bartle, the barrier-breaking courage of LTC Lucius E. Young, the diplomatic excellence of Maura Harty, and the innovative leadership of countless others who started as new members and became distinguished servants of humanity.
While our tradition is to challenge the fall pledge or new member class, this time we will, in turn, also challenge
“The young men and women of Alpha Phi Omega are wonderful people who can set positive examples for youngsters struggling in school. As college students, you have made it in their eyes and you are important role models for them. Your service sends a powerful message about the importance of literacy and the value of an education. There is no surer way to be of service to your community and your nation than helping a young person realize his or her potential.” Togo West, Zeta Phi ‘61
each of you — the brothers who went before them: find a way — big or small to engage with these Centennial New Members. Support their growth. Challenge them to think beyond traditional boundaries. Invest in their development with the same dedication that past brothers invested in today’s leaders. Watch them shine as they discover their potential for leadership and service.
This is more than just recruitment, this is legacy building. This is more than a pledge or new member class — this is the next chapter of APO’s story. Welcome to the Centennial New Member Class: the architects of Alpha Phi Omega’s second century of service!
A CHALLENGE TO THE FALL 2025 CENTENNIAL NEW MEMBER CLASS
“Shame on me if I can’t find a way, every day, to help others in ways both modest and maybe larger. As you lead your life, look for the small gesture, the effort made when no one will know you did it, the thing that helps others but has no positive outcome for you personally. Look for ways every day to touch someone else’s life in a positive way — whether they realize it or not!”
Maura Harty, Mu Alpha ‘78
Throughout Alpha Phi Omega’s nearly 100 years, we have built a legacy of service and brotherhood, continually demonstrating that we are stronger together than we are apart. The 2025 Fall Pledge Class Namesake Honoree Challenge calls upon the fall 2025 new member class to create a leadership, fellowship or service project that honors your chapter’s unique contribution to Alpha Phi Omega’s nearly 100-year legacy. Over the course of the fall semester, your class will research the chapter’s history within APO and on the campus, design a project that celebrates those traditions, and then lead the entire chapter in executing it, on or before Founders Day, December 16, 2025. This is your opportunity to demonstrate leadership, connect your chapter’s specific legacy to APO’s centennial story, and create something lasting that honors the generations of brothers who came before you. Your chapter’s place in APO history is waiting to be celebrated — are you ready to honor that legacy through service?
2010 2012 2015 2019
“For this fall’s pledge class members, I hope that they enjoy their pledge experience, and they challenge themselves to become bold leaders, by taking changes and learning from mistakes; become sincere friends, by caring for one another and forgiving one another, and to be an example of unselfish service whenever possible because helping is a blessing to others.”

Shaping the Fraternity’s Future
How Donor Support Shapes the Future of Leadership, Friendship and Service
Alpha Phi Omega has long been a beacon of Leadership, Friendship and Service, developing compassionate leaders dedicated to serving their communities. Since our founding, the Fraternity has challenged members to grow as leaders, serve their communities and build enduring bonds of brotherhood. Through the Centennial Campaign Leading the Way -https://apo.org/leadingtheway/ - our goal is to secure the next century of Leadership, Friendship and Service, ensuring our values remain the cornerstone of Alpha Phi Omega, guiding its programs and inspiring members
to make a lasting difference both during and after their college years. We are excited to share that we are 85 percent of the way toward our Centennial Capital Campaign goal – a remarkable achievement made possible by supporters throughout our APO family.
At the heart of these endeavors lies donor support, which is vital in our ongoing commitment to nurturing future leaders. Your support ensures the sustained success of programs like the Chapter Presidents Academy (check out the feature on page 8!), enabling us
to extend our reach and enhance the quality of leadership training we offer. Each contribution directly translates into essential tools and resources that will empower our future members to lead effectively, build inclusive communities, and inspire others toward lives of service and purpose.
The experiences gained at the Chapter Presidents Academy and other leadership programs stay with members long after graduation, influencing their careers, communities and families. The Centennial Capital Campaign is an investment in people. By taking part in the Leading the Way Campaign, you’re helping undergraduates grow into strong chapter leaders today – they are shaping business executives, civic leaders, educators and innovators for tomorrow!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude and emphasize that your generous action now will be remembered as the difference that shaped APO’s future.
