Brothers Ernest Holmes, SP '18 AP, and Tavis Thompson, SP '19 AP, created CodeHouse to ensure more students could access the pathways that lead to careers in STEM. To date, CodeHouse has secured more than $3 million in funding from leading tech companies like PayPal, Google and Microsoft, and has hosted multiple Tech Exposure Days to educate high schoolers across the country about careers in tech. CodeHouse has also launched the CodeHouse Scholars Initiative, which provides historically black colleges and universities' students majoring in STEM-related fields with $20,000 in academic scholarships, networking opportunities, and technical training as they matriculate. Brothers Holmes and Thompson were both initiated by way of the Alpha Rho Chapter at Morehouse College and both are Active Brothers in Eta Lambda.

Welcome to the second issue of the Sable and Or, the official magazine of the Eta Lambda Chapter. In this issue, I hope that you will be both informed and inspired by the wonderful contributions of our Chapter Brothers to not only the Fraternity but our communities at large. This magazine will continue to expand and serve as a snapshot of this epoch of the Chapter activities and Brothers within to remain for years to come. I am thankful for the many Brothers that have remained committed to making our Chapter one of the preeminent chapters in our Fraternity. As with Alpha, let Eta Lambda continue to Lead!

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

In reference to the Scripture above, the Apostle Paul is writing to the Church at Philippi from Rome where he is under house arrest. What is amazing is that his Philippian Epistle is peppered and packed with a plethora of “joy.” He is imprisoned and faces certain execution by the “mad” Emperor Nero. Yet, he pens and puts forth a “spiritually motivating letter to encourage the Church. This is remarkable because Paul proved the axiom that I live by:

and to “Press on” toward the “mark” of what Jesus Christ had called them to. In basic language, Paul encouraged them to “finish strong!” Brothers of Eta Lambda there are four weeks left in 2022 and I am encouraging you to finish strong!

The first eleven months of this year are in the rearview mirror of our lives and our acts and actions are now catalogued and footnoted in the “irretrievable past” and we cannot undo them. Therefore, we have to finish strong. A lot has happened in all of our lives this year. We have faced COVID-19, buried loved ones, received new degrees, entered new relationships, received promotions in our careers, sent our children off to college and even entered a large number of Brothers into our Omega Chapter and so much more over the past eleven months.

The question that I ask you now is how will you finish up 2022? Will you whine or will you win? Will you complain or will you champion? Will you blame or will you look for more blessings? Will you settle or will you soar? Guess what? The choice is yours! You will determine how you will finish the last few weeks of 2022.

Brethren, I challenge you to cross the victory finish line with fire and focus. Reach! Stretch! Hit the mark! You are not reaching and stretching alone because Jesus will help you to break the tape at the end of the finish line!

Lessons From Leadership

4. (AK): What's unique about the Alpha Rho Chapter? (TR): With the Alpha Rho chapter being one year from celebrating our centennial, we know that longevity for us is a big thing and as I'm somebody who really cares about history and living up to a legacy. And also, we just have so many influential men who have come through this chapter, and it's like, when you finally have the chance to become part of this chapter, you know, you want to follow suit. And that's why I really joined the chapter and the men I've met being being here before I even became a part of Alpha Rho Those men have gone on to do many the great things, and they've touched a lot of people in their lives and I just want to do the same.

5. (AK): What’s your most memorable moment as an Alpha? (TR): My most memorable moment so far as an Alpha this past weekend; winning College Brother of the Year, and I really worked hard. Coming in, I didn't really know what the outcome would be. I didn't know what other brothers were doing. So just to be able to be recognized at such a stage, and possibly, and I'll be able to compete at the Regional Convention and possibly win So that's something that I really, really won't ever forget.

6. (AK): What do you think Alpha's Role in the Community Should Be? (TR): You know, being a voice for those who who don't have one, especially, you know, young African American men, being that forgotten statistic that people don't really care about or people look over. It's our job to be their voice, to tell them about things they may not know about in school, they may not see every day, they may not hear every day We've been to a lot as men, and I feel like we have to use our experiences, you know, push that forward and show other men how to serve others.

7. (AK): What do you want your Legacy to be on the campus of Morehouse College? (TR): I just want to be known as somebody that handled their business and whether it be in a classroom, or whether it be outside the classroom. But I also want to be somebody that made sure others felt respected. So whether it comes to women, students, teachers, and so on, I want everyone to feel valued for who they are not just because I'm an Alpha My being able to be that man of valor, and a man of respect, that's really what I want to leave on this campus when I leave here

(AK): Why did you decide to join Alpha Phi Alpha? (DW): When I was at Morehouse, my initial exposure was somewhat limited but I started observing the fraternities on campus and for sure, the Brothers at the time, you could tell that they were about business They were much more aligned with my nature and my aspirations. Actually, when I was in high school, the first person that I know in my generation was a Que and I saw the stepping and the barking and I thought that was cool but then as I matured and got on campus, I saw that the real movers and shakers involved in student government, the different organizations; the common thread was Alpha Phi Alpha and I felt that I was much more aligned with their values and their principles So, just to be honest, I really wasn't about the whole Alpha Phi Alpha legacy, the Dr King's and all that - I didn't learn about that until later on. My exposure was more chapter specific and relating to the Brothers on the yard at the time and my understanding of Alpha grew more and more as time went on.

(AK): What’s one of the most pressing issues in the Fraternity? (DW): It's really hard to say one I actually, feel there are a couple of things, but I'm a little discouraged and disappointed about the retention and the fact that brothers come in and they, you know, in a couple of years, you know, our retention rate to me, is very discouraging and I think there must be some type of way that we can keep brothers, you know, you talk about reclaiming brothers but to me, it it begs a question, why did they become brothers in the 1st place. So it seems to be a gap, because whatever attracted them to the fraternity, it's not keeping them there And so I think that's a problem in that we don't retain Brothers Either they are doing it for self serving purposes and they got the title and they're fine with that; but they don't appear to be committed to the mission and our whole intake process and retention plan, there is something that's missing and needs to be evaluated.

(AK): Why did you seek the mantle of Leadership? (DW): I think about that question, and I really don't think I seek it. I think of some opportunities maybe seek me. I was raised, you know, both of my parents have been very involved in the community, and so I was raised in that you serve I believe I have a spirit of serving And I don't know if this gift, but, you know, I guess my strength is that I'm a professional accountant in finance and so that's a tool that I can offer and so often times people come to me, and it's not just Alpha, but also people in different organizations, because I have a skill set, but I think it's just in my nature to give back. And as they say, to whom much is given, much is required. I am blessed and I recognize my blessings and my opportunity to give back is the least that I can do and it's part of how I was raised

In college, Brothers called me to run for President I hesitated but I have always been called People see me as competent, reliable and accountable but believe me, my wife tells me that I need to say no sometimes

4. (AK): Why did you decide to transition into Eta Lambda? (DW): I am a native Atlantan. When I was growing up, a lot of my parents' colleagues and peers, and I didn't know this until later on, but they were Alphas, I grew up in Southwest Atlanta, and Southwest Atlanta, back in the day was, for lack of better term, the mecca of black professionals And a lot of them were Alphas And my parents used to always go to the Christmas Ball I mean, that's all I saw And so Eta Lambda has a very, very rich history And being a native I wouldn't see it any other way Bob Willis, he was always on me and he's one of my mentors and Ozelle Sutton, he used to work with my mother I mean, a lot of prominent people including politicians, like Maynard Jackson were a part of this chapter, Andy Young and so on I looked up to all these Brothers, and like I said, at first, I didn't know they were Alphas and then then later on, I realized that I had no other choice. If I was going to be active in Atlanta in an alumni chapter, it was going to be the Atlanta Chapter, and it had to be Eta Lambda.

5. (AK): What’s the most rewarding part of serving as a college advisor? (DW): The most rewarding part about serving as an advisor is that if you allow yourself to be influenced by the media, you will have this very daunting image of what black males are doing or what they are about and it is very refreshing to interact with these young minds, to see how progressive they are, to see that this is truly the next generation of leaders I mean, these are some of the smartest guys I know Some of these guys are wise beyond their years and it is refreshing when - the media is trying to, whether intentional or not create this dark and negative persona And to see what I see, and see how these young men are really about business, and to really feel that we're going to be okay, that the future is bright, and it's not as dark as some people would want you to think it is - that's the most rewarding part. And then to see their evolution; to know that people like, Randall Woodfin was in our chapter, you know, he was SGA President, and to see him now as the Mayor of Birmingham, I mean, it didn't get much better I mean, the guys that you're working with who started CodeHouse, Ernest and Tavis, it gives me a good feeling that it's not as bleak as some people would want you to think

6 (AK): What’s the most challenging part of serving as a college advisor? (DW) The challenging thing is the flipside in that some of these guys, I don't know if they really see their potential I don't know if they really if they really grasp the opportunity I don't know if these guys really have a sense of the foundation that they're creating, and how they can build from that and sometimes I like to think that when you interact with senior people which I still do, you know, they're like a crystal ball and you can look at them and kind of see into the future. And I have a daughter, so I get it, sometimes they have to learn, or they have to go to on that path but sometimes I don't know if they are really truly grasping and taking full advantage of the opportunity afforded to them. I sometimes we wish it was as easy as, just flipping a switch But, you know, we, we all, we all have our own journey

7 (AK): As you are about to approach 45 years in the Fraternity, what has been your most memorable moment as an Alpha? (DW): Well, I'm going to go back to '78 because, I think you sense this, but my nature, it's not the seek attention, is just kind of due to work And when the Brothers came to me and said, they want you to be the President, I think that's probably the most significant event in my life, because I think that chartered the course from that point on. And so that the trigger, that was the spark that got me started and the rest is history, but sometimes you never know how that journey is going to play out. And especially at an early age, you sometimes don't have the confidence in your ability. And sometimes people see something in you that you don't see. So, I'm just going to start at the beginning, because I have a lot of memories, you know, like I was saying earlier, you know, there there are certain things in life that really affect the decisions you make and one of the most critical decisions I made, and I had choices but one of the most significant things that I did was decide to become a member of the fraternity, and then and then the rest, you know, the path kind of evolved from there So when, when those Brothers came to me, I can remember them now You know, that's probably one of the most impactful, significant events in my Alpha journey

Journeying Into the House of Alpha: A Note for Brothers New

My journey towards Alpha was largely facilitated by the relationships I fostered with Black men throughout my stay at Morehouse College beginning seven years ago. Even prior to this, when journeying throughout the city of Huntsville, AL., many of the men who played an influential role in my development – unbeknownst to me at the time – were Alpha men as well As it stands, for the past seven years, Alpha hasn’t only been on my mind, but so has the state of Black men. From seven years ago to now, the question that plagues me is, “Where do we go from here?” However, coupled with this is the constant pursuit to understand what it truly means to be a brother, and ultimately what true brotherhood is beyond the noun sense of the word or Websters definition: The relationship between brothers. In fact, a bigger question I’ve recently explored is, “How does the quality of brotherhood between Black men influence the core of the Black community altogether?”

Perhaps Alpha is a solution to these questions, as it has historically been the blueprint of fraternal bonds, and its history alone has served as elements of World History and particularly Black History through and through Men of Alpha have acted as sounding boards to the state of marginalized and vulnerable communities globally, having tirelessly advocated both with and for our people. What’s to be appreciated is this constant that has existed since our Founding on December 4, 1906, to this moment of reflection on November 22, 2022: Brotherhood I should take a pause here to mention that while the advancements of the Fraternity have synonymously advanced the state of Black people, we must be critically mindful to evolve in congruence with society unless the matter is that our evolution sets the standard for broader society to follow. We must be intentional to evolve within our House and beyond our own deep-rooted traditions that may no longer serve us in modern moments, though they may have built the foundation for where we currently stand. Brotherhood is about a bond, but it’s also a cause that is far greater than us, and as such, brotherhood is also an act of transcendence And so, we will be transcendent for our people, for one another, for the Black man, and for ourselves.

Harping on the last point, transcendence of self, my journey towards manhood has been largely about this state of becoming It’s been about a transfiguration of self, a journey of patience, healing, advocacy, and true-to-form, it’s been about Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind. This journey has been one of transparency as a Black man, but also vulnerability and humility Moreover, it’s been the method by which I’ve been able to transform myself, but also those in my environment, not by force, but rather organically. You see, something amazing happened when I began being vulnerable and transparent with my experiences and general being years ago. I noticed that other Black men began feeling safe enough to reveal, celebrate, and explore themselves too I realize that we truly are interconnected, and that in many ways, my display of survival throughout the years and a willingness to live empowers brothers to embrace life themselves to do the same. It’s been through this state of becoming that I’ve began to understand the personal principles that govern brotherhood for me, but also brotherly love prior to Alpha and even so within this House:

26

Above all, do right by yourself and others. The right people should notice, and if not, do good anyways

Don’t dim your light to make others more secure in theirs. You can both shine.

Don’t let your desire to change someone be greater than your desire to change No one and nothing should be anyone’s everything. Such a responsibility will almost always destroy a good thing

Give people their roses. If they mean something to you, inspire you, uplift you, or support you, show them your appreciation through both word and deed. It makes a world of a difference. Remember to pour into yourself and someone else each day For the people you love, show them, and tell them. At some point, your life will be summarized by a simple memory. Immortalize the moments by being light and love to yourself and the world around you The key to your liberation, peace, and joy lies in your willingness and ability to sit with and transcend the cause(s) of your suffering, and not in the avoidance of them or in your projection of those causes onto others.

Prioritize your peace and the peace of others, being mindful of the people and things that can disrupt your soul, while also being mindful of what things you may be doing that causes disruption for others as well. Under healthy and mutual boundaries, everyone’s peace and needs take equal precedence

One day or day one. You decide.

In the process of becoming both as man fundamentally and within the House of Alpha, you’ll come to realize things, people, and places you’ve once indulged in no longer resonate, certain conversations lose their appeal, and your appreciation for change and structure becomes more refined In this period, it’s common to feel conflicted and lost, because the person you’re becoming is as much of a stranger to you as the things you’re outgrowing. In this stage of your journey, embrace the moments, time, and new beginnings You’re laying the foundation of the complex being that is you, rooted in truth, light, love, and healthy and sustainable boundaries. You’ll gain a new sense of autonomy, where in contrast to where you once felt a desire to control everything, you instead find liberation in the unknown, especially in relinquishing the desire for power over the things that are out of your hands. In becoming, you come to understand that less is more, in people, places, and things Isolation may feel like company and the wrong company feels like a disturbance. Fear of missing out becomes a thing of the past, because in your total essence, your company is more than enough and sharing your presence with someone that doesn’t compromise your peace is a welcoming concept but isn’t mandatory. You’ll learn to celebrate the possibilities of the future but won’t dwell on them. You accept the past as it is, no longer occupying a residency in the things that were, but you cherish the lesson each memory yields. You come to understand that the present moment, the here and now, is worthy of total celebration

Regardless of if you’ve arrived at this person that you’re hopeful of becoming just yet, you find solace in the person you currently are. Becoming is the constant state of evolution and being, unfolding, discovery, and transcendence. In this House, we celebrate who you were, are, and will be The moments of my and your existence, this is what we live for In this House, we are light, we are love, we are brothers. We are a brotherhood in action, and we must be critically mindful and evermore intentional to outstretch our arms to even the darkest and coldest corners of the world to support its advancements as we support our own, upholding our motto: First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All For it is in our transcendence where the better making of men occurs and ambitions are stimulated, where we are prepared for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual, where the highest and noblest forms of manhood are encouraged, and where we aid down-trodden humanity in efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. We are AΦA.

THE CHAPTER OF COLLEGE PRESIDENTS: EDUCATION, LEADERSHIP, & SPIRITUAL STRIVINGS

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has been a leader in all field of human endeavor since 1906 with an onus on scholarship at the forefront of this effort. Similarly, the presidency of HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) has been an honorable position that members of the fraternity have spearheaded since the early twentieth century. Even more captivating is that the Eta Lambda chapter in Atlanta, Georgia, may take the crown in having the most college presidents within the fraternity.

When the Eta Lambda chapter was charted on Thursday, May 20, 1920, the chapter was novel to Atlanta, and fraternities in the south were generally not accepted – especially BGLOs (Black Greek-letter Organizations). However, one of the charter initiates, Charles Wesley Greene, affectionately called the “Grand Old Man” of the chapter, spoke about the chapter’s early strategies for chartering chapters throughout the southern region in The Sphinx (1938). Greene recalled that Eta-Lambda had

a committee that would go to various Black colleges throughout the south and have meetings with the institution's president.

The plan was for the chapter to initiate a president who was of “fit material that Alpha Phi Alpha approved” and to establish a chapter once the president felt “the same spirit and love [that] motivated me and many other brothers too numerous to name to sacrifice our time and even our money to carry the light to others” Unfortunately, this tactic had not worked for Atlanta University, Fisk University, Talladega College, Shaw University, and others.

According to Greene, one of the reasons why it had not worked at these institutions was because the fraternity would “consider only Negro males of collegiate grade.” However, there were several college presidents who joined the chapter or were initiated into the chapter later during this time period (1920s). Some of them include: John Henry Lewis (Morris Brown University), Mathew Simpson Davage (Clark University), Henry Alexander Hunt (Fort Valley Normal and Industrial School), John Hope (Morehouse College & Atlanta University), and David Dallas Jones (Bennett College).

In this day and age, Eta Lambda can boast of having an honor roll of presidential men of Alpha: Hugh Morris Gloster (Morehouse College), Harper Council Trenholm (Alabama State College), Alphonso Elder (North Carolina College for Negroes), Alonzo Graseano Moron (Hampton Institute), James Colston (Bethune-Cookman, Savannah State, & Knoxville College), Benjamin Phillip Brawley (Clark College), Thomason Winston Cole (Atlanta University & Clark-Atlanta University), Robert Michael Franklin (Morehouse College), Wiley Abron Perdue (Interim, Morehouse College), and Michael Lomax (Dillard University).

Today, the chapter continues f excellence with at least fifteen college presidents who have either been a member or an initiate of the Eta Lambda chapter. The chapter could establish an entire series of essays on the number of Eta-Lambda men that have impacted this nation. An even more interesting statistic would be how many college departments have the chapter produced? The majestic history of Eta Lambda is limitless and should be explored in the future. Nevertheless, this chapter’s impressive piece of data on college presidents accompanies the long list of the grand accomplishments that Eta Lambda continues to make every day.
