President’s Corner The Chapter is firing on all cylinders during the second half of the Fraternal Year. Pi Upsilon Lambda is going strong on multiple fronts representing the Brotherhood and the Fraternity to the highest of levels.

The 25th anniversary committee is planning multiple events in the coming months. We are reaching out to our men with the Men’s Health Forum. The Chapter is re-igniting the annual Golf Tournament for the Pi Upsilon Lambda Foundation. The Candidates Forum will engage the community for this upcoming election season.

The Chapter has kicked off another successful Youth Leadership Development Institute. The theme this year is “Enhancing the Minds of Our Future Leaders.”

We will continue to Uplift the Phi with events engaging the Brotherhood. We had a successful Super Bowl that allowed the chapter to continue to fellowship amongst each other and their families. We have planned multiple happy hours to “get away from it all” with the Brotherhood.

MLK Breakfast

On January 15th, 2018, approximately 15 - 20 PUL Brothers attended the MLK Breakfast hosted at the Bethesda North Marriot Hotel. In attendance were Brothers Alex Bailey, Sam Tarver, James Massey and his sister Soror Marissa Massey, Paul Brown, Hasan Majied, Michael Johnson and his nephew, Brothers Demetrius from HZ Chapter, James Roberson and his wife, and my wife, Jackie).

Theme: "The Challenge Ahead Economic and Social Justice" The Mistress of Ceremony was Leslie Foster, WUSA Television.

Wonderful music selections were rendered by the IUL Ensemble with Bro Ronald D. Johnson as Director.

Brother Isiah "Ike" Leggett, former Montgomery County Executive, gave a wonderful keynote speech comparing past and future racially challenging events that happened in Montgomery, AL to Montgomery County, MD. He demonstrated how, in some ways, both Montgomery, AL and Montgomery County, MD have dealt with some of the same racial issues albeit one more overtly than the other.

Nevertheless, they are the same racial challenges and in some ways Montgomery, AL has improved more in conquering those challenges. As an exemplar, Brother Leggett pointed to the recent vote of Doug Jones over Roy Moore as a major accomplishment of epic proportion. Ninety-nine percent of black women voted. Simply amazing! "...Even President Putin doesn't get those types of voting metrics...�

2018 Superbowl Party On Sunday, February 5, 2018, Brothers and family members were hosted by Brother Montrell Perry’s family to watch the New England Patriots versus the Philadelphia Eagles. On a night of surprises, the Brothers and their families enjoyed fellowship amongst each other as everyone watched the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Patriots for Philly’s first Super Bowl win.

Youth Leadership Development Institute Session Calendar - Completed On a cold Sunday on January 28, 2018, young gentlemen entered the SKC Early Education Center with their parents to kick off the 2018 Annual Youth Leadership Development Institute (YLDI). In conjunction with the Alpha Phi Alpha Pi Upsilon Lambda Charitable Foundation, Brother Duane Edwards has coordinated a thirteen week engagement with our youth, educating them on multiple topics they face in their day-to-day lives. YLDI is a program that aims to provide experiences that develop future leaders in male youths located in Prince George’s County, MD. The focus is on educational enrichment outside the classroom through leadership, soft-skilled development, culture awareness, weekly seminars and several field trips. This year’s theme is “Enhancing the Minds of Our Future Leaders.”

There are 17 students from grades 7-9 that participate in the program with a focus on the following topics: The Brothers of PUL and the students have also gone on multiple field trips.

The young men toured and enjoyed the National Museum of African American History and Culture and attended a screening of Black Panther.

On Monday, January 22 , 2018, Alpha Phi Alpha – Pi Upsilon Lambda was recognized by the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis, Maryland during Alpha Phi Alpha’s Annual Legislative Night. Brother President Damian Taylor accepted the award on the Brothers’ behalf.

Multiple elected officials and Brothers were in attendance for Alpha night that included Eastern Regional Vice President Brother Lucien Metellus, Brother Keith Hayes (District 44B), Brother Charles Sydnor II (District 44B), Brother Alonzo Washington (District 22), Brother Okey Enyia, and Brother Edward Burroughs.

he Brothers have completed many activities as part of the

yearlong celebration of being charted in the Fraternity for 25 years.

The committee can always use a Brother’s help, so be on the lookout for additional correspondence on how you can assist. Led by Brother Paul Brown, below is an update on what has been completed and what activities are scheduled:

Men's Health Forum (April 21, 2018) – Led by Brother Torrance Brown, the Brothers will provide multiple health screenings for men in our community. The forum will highlight and inform the public on health issues that African-American men are facing.

Golf Tournament (May 21, 2018)– The Brothers will be at The Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, Maryland, where the Brothers will initiate an annual fundraising event, where the proceeds would go to either the Chapter to continue to promote the Chapter’s programs or to the Alpha Phi Alpha – Pi Upsilon Lambda Foundation.

Local Candidates Forum (June 2018) – The Brothers will host a forum where the community would meet local politicians and debate on the issues that our community is facing. The forum is an opportunity for local politicians to speak on their platform for the 2018 elections.

Brotherhood Affairs On Sunday, January 8, 2018, our very own Chaplain, Brother Robert Dantzler officially became a Stephen’s Minister with the Emory Fellowship – A United Methodist Congregation. A Stephen’s Minister is the one-on-one lay caring ministry that takes place in congregations that use the training methods and materials provided

by Stephens Ministries, St. Louis, Missouri. After training, these lay caregivers are empowered to provide high quality, confidential, Christ –centered care to people who are hurting or who find themselves in a “crisis.”

These “crises” can be grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, or some other life crises. Stephen Ministers provide care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for an hour. The meeting is agreed upon by the caregiver (Stephen Minister) and the care receiver (the person who is hurting or in crisis). The connection between the caregiver and the care receiver is always confidential. Stephen Minsters gather regularly with Stephen Leaders and continuing education. After 50 hours of training, Stephens Minsters are commissioned by their pastors to go forth and minister to persons in crises.

On Friday, March 23, 2018, our own Brother Okey Enyia was admitted to the DrPH program in Health Policy at the Milken Institute School of Public Affairs at the George Washington University. Brother Enyia’s passion for public health and dedication to academic development really impressed the faculty at George Washington.

Please congratulate Brother Enyia on this great opportunity. The Brotherhood wishes you much success.

Project Alpha The youths were engaged and participated throughout the session.

There were a lot of questions from the young men particularly where they could get additional information when they depart from the Detention Center.

On March 3, 2018, several Brothers attended the Cheltenham Youth Detention Center in Cheltenham, Maryland. The facility serves as a secure detention facility for male youths who are waiting to go to court or be placed in a treatment facility. Cheltenham primarily serves male youth from Prince George's, Montgomery, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties.

Cheltenham provides dietary, medical, educational and counseling services as well as recreational space. In addition to receiving services, youth residing at the facility attend school in the facility year round, five days a week for six hours a day.

The leadership of Brother Michael Nelson coordinated the visit to over 55 high school aged young men. The facility was well secured with multiple check points and requirements for entry. Pi Upsilon Lambda had 12 Brothers assist with mentoring and presenting different topics to these young men.

Brother Michael Nelson and Brother Michael Johnson opened the session by providing a brief history on Alpha Phi Alpha and the various paths Brothers made it to college. The Brothers laid out the program of the events to come.

Brother Porter provided a presentation on High Esteem – High Power, where we talked to the young men about building up their self-worth.

Brother Demetrius Keller facilitated a discussion around Conflict Resolution. The young men really took to Brother Keller because he was one of the younger Brothers of the Fraternity.

Brother Michangelo Scruggs informed the young men on the various complications with Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

The presenters did a great job on their specific topics and multiple Brothers chimed in to provide their perspective and experience. This was a Brotherhood affair that everyone in the room engaged in the discussions. As the program ended, all of the Brothers let the youth and the staff know one by one, that we were college educated and professional men of Alpha.

The staff appreciated that Alpha Phi Alpha was there to talk to the young men. The staff invited PUL back to have additional sessions and possibly have a reoccurring role with talking to the young men.
