Instilling Excellence Within Generation Z 2023 LE ADE R S H I P CON F E R E N CE

Alpha Gamma Rho National Leaders traveled to Sacramento, California, for the Leadership Conference, Aug. 4–6, 2023. A focus of this year’s biennial meeting was connecting Alpha Gamma Rho with the newest generation coming onto campus, Generation Z. Together, National Board members, Foundation Board members, Regional Vice Presidents, Collegiate Advisory Council members, and others developed strategies to continue growing that connection within today’s student population by “Instilling Excellence.”

WHAT IS THE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE? Every other year, between years of the National Convention, a Leadership Conference hosts National Leaders to gather and discuss key priorities of the Fraternity and Educational Foundation.

National Leaders first gathered in California, Thursday, Aug. 3, for an introduction to the state’s agriculture by way of brotherhood (see pages 6, 7). However, the 2023 Leadership Conference officially began the following afternoon, Friday, Aug. 4, at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. Grand President, Brother Greg Nickerson, conducted the Opening Ceremony and led the opening session followed by an agenda overview and staff introductions by the CEO of Alpha Gamma Rho, Brother Rex Martin.

That evening, Alpha Gamma Rho hosted a reception at Old Sugar Mill in Clarksville, California. Built in 1934 as a beet-sugar refinery, the Old Sugar Mill is home to 14 wineries and expansive picnic grounds:

making it a premier destination in northern California for events and festivals. Leaders and their guests had the opportunity to tour the facility and see how more than a dozen separately owned wineries could operate in a repurposed shared space that is 90 years old.

INSTILLING EXCELLENCE: EDUCATION The following day, National Leaders heard presentations from two organizational development professionals from Plaid, LLC. First, Senior Consultant.

Meghan Grace, Ed.D., presented “Understanding AGR’s Collegiate Members: A Discussion on Gen Z.” Followed by Managing Partner Chris Wood’s “Instilling Excellence Among our Chapters: Analyzing the Performance of AGR’s Chapters.” Both presentations provided valuable insight into the unique strengths and areas of growth of Generation Z and allowed brothers to ask direct questions related to the Fraternity’s role among modern students.

INSTILLING EXCELLENCE: STRATEGIES After the presentations, the Leadership Conference moved into group discussions. Five groups, equipped with an area of expertise and a member of every generation discussed challenges and opportunities lying ahead for Alpha Gamma Rho. Not as Baby Boomers or

Recruitment: Many modern students experienced substantial portions of high school through their phone. They crave a sense of belonging that is sincere and genuine experience.

Philanthropy: This generation wants to make a positive impact and feel connected to their community. They approach philanthropy with purpose when they feel a personal connection with the cause.

Communication: Creating a one-on-one connection is crucial to effectively communicate with and engage modern students.

Using multiple platforms for messages runs the risk of being overwhelming.

Programming: For effective and impactful experiences, programs must have readily available resources that are easy to access.

INSTILLING EXCELLENCE: FUTURE After a day filled with intensive strategic planning, National Leaders gathered at a breakfast forum the next day for the final meeting. Members of the Nominating Committee and other attendees identified potential future leaders of the Fraternity and concluded the 2023 Leadership Conference.

of meticulously maintained trellises lined the rolling hills of a landscape dominated by towering mountains. This marriage of natural beauty and manmade artistry set the stage for an Alpha Gamma Rho-grown introduction to California agriculture.

On Aug. 3, 2023, a day before the 2023 Leadership Conference began, Brother Richard Engel, Phi (UC-Davis) guided nearly 60 National Leaders and guests across northern California on an insightful tour of the state’s ag industry featuring five brother-owned businesses. The tour started that morning near the California Capitol, where Brother Engel welcomed everyone boarding the bus.

“Does anyone know how many commodities are produced here in California’s Central Valley?” Brother Engel asked soon after they departed. The group replied with

numbers in the 100-150 range, eventually creeping up to 200.

“It’s more than 230,” said Brother Engel, answering his own question to end the guessing game. It was the first of several eye-opening facts he revealed as they traveled across the Central Valley, the nation’s most productive agricultural region.

The facts he shared were prevalent in the scenery outside the bus, sparking in-depth conversations amongst those inside.

Suddenly, that scenery changed. The low flat valley they had been traveling across was now a complex network of valleys renowned for beauty and bounty. The landscape of beautiful vistas and stunning vineyards made it clear. This was Napa and Sonoma. This is Wine Country.

nia’s grapes commodities, which includes wine. At $5.5 billion, it is the second most valuable commodity in the state according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Brother Engel explained the viticulture behind the region’s intricate topography, complex soil types, and diverse microclimates that make it one of the best areas in the world to grow wine grapes.

Alexander Valley Vineyards is an award-winning family owned and operated vineyard in Sonoma County, California, founded in 1975 by Brother Hank Wetzel III, Phi (UC-Davis). His son, Brother Hank Wetzel IV, Phi (UC-Davis), is the head of operations.

They welcomed the group and personally provided tours of the scenic 700-acre operation, with Brother Wetzel IV answering enology questions. He spoke broadly on their process matching grape varieties to soil profiles, planting specific rootstocks and clones. The tour concluded as they exited one of the four manufactured caves on the property. Brother Wetzel IV explaining, “It give us about an acre of naturally cooled underground barrel storage and aging space.”

Following the tour, Brother Rick Aldine, Phi (UC-Davis), owner of Agajanian Vineyards and Wine Company; Brother John Bucher, Phi (UC-Davis), owner of Bucher Wines; and Brother Matt Sherwin, Beta Kappa (Chico State), owner of Sherwin Family Vineyard, greeted guests for tasting and reception. After lunch, the event concluded with each brother taking a moment to speak to the crowd. They spoke of the impact Alpha Gamma Rho had on

their education and careers, highlighting the professional and social contribution of brotherhood in their development. AGR helped them to grow their companies alongside brothers, in the most competitive region for the industry.

National Leaders reflected on what had just transpired while the bus completed a brief drive to their last stop.

Brother Fred Cline, Phi (UC-Davis), started Cline Family Cellars in 1982. His commitment to quality and sustainability grows award-winning wine and surroundings for incredible events. Moments after stepping off the bus, the attention to detail and pride in the product was clear, and reinforced by the attentive staff who led a tour of the grounds.

Each step into the venue was another into its surreal atmosphere of beautiful gardens, spring-fed ponds, and history. Beyond the 1850s farmhouse, train car, and private cabanas, neighboring a pen of affectionate donkeys is a museum that caught the group’s attention.

The California Missions Museum displays models of the 21 religious outposts established by the Catholic Church between 1769 and 1833 along the California coast, explained the tour guide. “The vineyard is on the site of the Sonoma Mission,” he said.

The group learned the Cline family bought the models at auction and built the museum themselves. It is free to visit, popular for school field trips, and another element to enhance the overall encounter.

In Wine Country, the experience is part of the product.

Alpha Gamma Rho’s New Colony in West Texas On September 24, 2023, Alpha Gamma Rho was enthused to create a link in the Fraternal bonds of brotherhood by establishing its newest colony at West Texas A&M University.

As a Fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho strives to make a continuous effort to analyze what new campuses will best benefit from the presence and Purpose of Alpha Gamma Rho. This fall the social-professional fraternity found a new home in Canyon, Texas, where 30 individuals all raised their hands and committed to the values and principles Alpha Gamma Rho instills in all of its members.

While this is not the first time a colony has been established at this institution, the Fraternity has no doubt that this group of driven leaders will successfully transition into a flourishing chapter within the next couple of years. These men are engaged in a broad range of studies from agribusiness and economics, equine industry studies, plant and soil sciences, animal sciences, 8

West Texas A&M University located in the panhandle in Canyon, Texas, is part of the Texas A&M University System since 1990.

pre-veterinary medicine, and many other majors spanning across the university.

Together, these new colony members have a combined grade point average of 3.39, two currently serve as Texas State FFA Officers, and each are involved in other key organizations on campus.

The journey of developing this colony first started during the spring of 2022 with initial conversations among interested student leaders, members of the Paul Engler College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, and the Alpha Gamma Rho Home Office.

From there, Southwest Regional Vice President, Cody Lane took the lead and pushed hard to collect data on the campus, gather names of potential new members, and further cultivate the relationship with the university. An interest group was later formed and ongoing communication with the interested students was maintained throughout the 2022-2023 academic year.

From the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources to the broader campus community, West Texas A&M University faculty and staff are excited to have Alpha Gamma Rho on campus.

These new colony members have a combined 3.39 GPA, two serve as Texas State FFA Officers.

Finally, the day came as a sunny Sunday in late September to bring the West Texas A&M Colony into existence. Brothers from the Beta Xi Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at Texas Tech University traveled hundreds of miles to help install the colony. Among those initiated was Dr. Tommy Perkins, Associate Professor of Animal Sciences, and one of two Advisers who have stepped up to work with the colony.

“This is a day for celebration and commitment to the future successes of an Alpha Gamma Rho presence at West Texas A&M,” said Senior Director of Operations Grant Bargfrede at the insallation. “The real work begins today to ensure what you have created will be around for future generations of student leaders who come after you.”

RHO CHAPTER CARRIES ON ICONIC TRADITION In the pre-dawn hours of Sept. 8, 2023, Brothers of Rho Chapter got to work helping carry on the “Paint the A” tradition at Colorado State University. It is one of the school’s oldest traditions and Alpha Gamma Rho has been part of it since the beginning.

“A” stands for Aggies and its roots trace back to when the school was still Colorado Agricultural College. According to the university, on Dec. 4, 1923, students, then known as Aggies, voted to build a giant “A” in the foothills west of campus. Nine months later, Aggies finished hand building the 450-foot-long stone emblem. The first painting occurred shortly after, when male freshmen students formed a 600yard bucket brigade to shuttle buckets of paint up the hillside. Brothers were involved in every stage at the beginning of the tradition, with the Rho Chapter chartered just a few years before, in 1921.

The school’s name and mascot have both changed, but the tradition continues with help from Rho Chapter. They are responsible for getting all the supplies up to the site a day before the painting. Noble Ruler Aiden Gilbreth said they use the same technique as their predecessors to carry the 50 gallons of eco-friendly paint, 50 gallons of water, sprayers, generators, buckets, and other supplies provided by the Colorado State University Alumni Association up to the “A.” “Early Friday morning we have guys go out and pick up the paint,” Brother Gilbreth added “Then however long it takes, we will start carrying it up.” Last year, it took a 40man team four and half hours.

Brothers return the following morning to assist the incoming freshmen and volunteers who perform most of the painting. Afterwards, they clean up the area and take the supplies back down. It is a strenuous two-day commitment for the chapter, but well worth it to assist

the alumni association and their partner on the project, the Ag Science Program.

“This is just a great way to strengthen our relationship every year, at the beginning of the year,” Brother Gilbreth said, add-ing, “When they do involvement fairs, we are invited to set up a table and represent our brand there. So, we help them, and they help us.”

Rho Chapter has seen im-proved recruitment and connec-tion with the Ag Science pro-gram since it took over this role in 2008. It has no intention of giving it up anytime soon.

YOU KNOW IT BY HEART, the Purpose of Alpha Gamma Rho is To Make Better Men, and that is fundamentally true. Chapters work toward this goal of “Making Better Men” daily and strategically over time through personal development, professional growth, and chapter-wide achievement. But what does that look like in action? And how has AGR been able to consistently produce results that have helped to make better men?

The answer—shared values.

But not just any shared values—the shared values of AGR that focus on both individual and communal growth, development, integrity, and success.

These values continue to stand the test of time and remain relevant. They continue To Make Better Men. As the collegiate landscape continues to change, our students and chapters continue to adapt and evolve how they live out AGR’s values and hold each other accountable for living up to these standards.

ESTABLISHING MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS Inevitably, we all make mistakes. Learning from those mistakes is critically important.

This is as true for young and seasoned professionals as it is for our collegiate members.

And sometimes, it takes others giving feedback to help us realize where there is opportunity for growth.

Brother Brendan Scoralick, Noble Ruler of Gamma Eta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at the State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill, knows this is especially true for his chapter. He attributes deep relationships as one of

the keys to success in helping his brothers stay true to their values and strive for success.

“We are working hard to set the values,” Brother Scoralick says. “We know that if we work hard to engrain strong values now, it will help reduce behavior that drifts which could lead to risky incidents.”

As a new chapter, SUNYCobleskill is on the forefront of the work to establish strong AGR values in its members and its alumni—many of which are just a few years out of college.

“Our chapter has been established right out of the ‘AGR Handbook’,” says Brother Scoralick. “We do not have to contend with the traditions that have been passed down.

Hazing is not even a concern for us—it just is not a part of who we are because it is not consistent with our values.”

Gamma Eta’s values are strong and driven directly by its membership in everything they do. Their key to success; deep relationships.

“When we have deeper conversations, we notice we’re able to have stronger connections and a bond beyond the superficial,” says Brother Scoralick. “Brothers at Gamma Eta truly live out brotherhood daily. The guys come alongside each other especially when someone is at their lowest, most vulnerable point.”

This was evident among the brothers of Gamma Eta when two brothers lost their parents, and there was work to be done at home.

“Of course, we were there to support each other. We grieved with them as they experienced unimaginable losses. Our brotherhood showed up in a way that helped each other through class, but also by going

An environment where AGR’s values are the standard each brother strives to become the best version of themselves supported by fellow 14

brothers in pursuit of the same.

“Pushing each other to stretch and reach our full potential is one of the best ways that we live out our brotherhood on a daily basis,” explains Brother Dane Haubenschild, Noble Ruler of Lambda Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at the University of Minnesota. He attributes mentoring, tutoring, and guidance as key attributes to Making Better Men. “We always want what is best for each other and for AGR. We live by our vows, and as

fellow brothers, we hold each other accountable to them.”

Development comes in many forms—personal, professional, educational, and social, to name a few. While striving to improve in these areas, it can be difficult to objectively assess your own progress. One of the benefits of brotherhood is the mutual agreement to provide each other constructive feedback helping brothers achieve their full potential.

“Sometimes, feedback is tough to receive, but it is important because it invites self-reflection,” says Brother Haubenschild. “We rely on our fellow brothers to be role models and to give and receive that feedback as we work To Make Better Men.” Thanks to creating an open environment to provide candid, constructive feedback, the chapter experiences fewer issues with conflict. Brother Haubenschild believes that is rooted in the practice of first seeking to understand.

“Give everyone the opportunity to share their perspective first. Listen and consider a different point of view, and then pursue the dialogue,” says Brother Haubenschild. “Maybe we need to explain why we see things from a certain perspective, but you can only understand that if you listen first.”

FOSTERING CHAPTERWIDE ACHIEVEMENT Individual success is not the only form of success. AGR chapters are incubators for interpersonal and leadership development, too.

Chapters that work together, encouraging chapter and individual achievements find that they can drive adherence to AGR’s values in systemic

and programmatic ways, too.

“Leadership isn’t about knowing,” says Brother Blake Beltz, Noble Ruler at Alpha Gamma Chapter at the University of Florida. “Our alumni board realizes that growth is something that is ongoing. We might not ever get ‘there,’ but we need to continue to make progress.”

When the chapter experienced a lapse in drive from some of its leaders, it became especially evident in some officers routinely providing a “no report” during chapter meetings. For Beltz, that was an indicator of opportunity to create a different culture—a culture of accountability, growth, and achievement.

“If you have no report, it must mean you haven’t been doing your job,” says Brother Beltz. “We need to provide programming and growth for our membership, and it is every brother’s job to help make sure that we’re pushing for that.”

Beltz and his officer team, along with previous officer teams, have established the core mentality of inviting the officer team to “do something important and build something” that will help the chapter grow.

During his term in office, Beltz and his team have worked with the alumni educational foundation to change the academic outlook for the chapter.

“Changing up the points system is one of the most important things we’ve done,” says Brother Beltz. “We’ve weighted things that are more important, and we’ve changed it so that it can be calculated in real-time so that we can see which brothers are adhering to

our values and living up to our expectations.”

CREATING A CULTURE OF ACCOUNTABILITY AGR’s values are only as good as the members and chapters who live them. To help all members live out those values and continue in the pursuit of making better men, all chapters and members need to work together to keep pushing for that growth and development.

“We’re reminded of the fact that we have a different set of values than other fraternities on campus,” says Brother Beltz. “We have a respectful culture that is instilled in us at home where we use manners like saying ‘yes, ma’am’ and ‘yes, sir,’ and we make sure that we demonstrate that respect for everyone.”

While distinguished by our connection to agriculture in its broadest sense of food, fiber, fuels, and natural resources, AGR stands out among social and professional organizations because of the moral fiber that runs through its brotherhood, too.

AGR’s Brotherhood Program made AGR one of the first fraternities to eliminate the pledge system nationwide and instead focused on developing strong, healthy relationships through brotherhood. That shift embodied and exemplified the values of AGR.

“We have something special at AGR,” says Brother Haubenschild. “We benefit from the lifelong connections and brotherhood, but it is all built on those shared values designed to help us make better men.”

“We aren’t just a group of friends, peers, associates, or members,” says Brother Scoralick. “We are brothers, and we are family. We push through the ups and downs because, together, we are all committed to making better men.”

INTEGRITY: INTERSECTION OF BROTHERHOOD & ACCOUNTABILITY As the adage goes, “The rising tide lifts all ships.”

Our members and chapters benefit from the mutual accountability to achieving growth and becoming better men.

From a liability perspective, strong brotherhood built upon AGR’s values presents an opportunity to reduce risky behavior and hold each other accountable to helping To Make Better Men. Accountability is the linchpin that holds this brotherhood together, ensuring not only members benefit from the experiences but so do the Fraternity and society at large. As the Fraternity continues to evolve, it is essential to emphasize the importance of accountability, as it is through accountability that brotherhood thrives and makes a lasting impact on the lives of its members and members to come.

ELIVERING A SUCCESSFUL event is like delivering a minor miracle. It needs foresight, planning, and flawless execution. It needs an event manager with a large and diverse skillset, able to stay focused on the big picture while also hyper-focused on every detail. Bring that all together for a smooth, seamless experience and the event can be a success… once. But what if it is a recurring event? For chapters that could be “Founder's Day,” “Pink Rose Formal,” or “Alpha Gamma Rodeo.” Well, you need to perform all the aspects mentioned above, but better. Every time. That is what it takes for a recurring event to be successful. The audience needs something new to attract its attention. It needs event managers committed to creativity and innovation. It needs leaders who push each other to shoot for the stars, because, eventually, you will get one. You will get a country music superstar to perform at a festival for testicles.

That happened in Bozeman, Montana, on Sept. 15, 2023.

The audience of more than 8,000 people will confirm. So will the charities that shared $60,000 in donations from the event’s $120,000 proceeds.

“Testy Fest” did not become “America’s Favorite Sack Lunch” overnight. This was the 33rd “Testy Fest” by Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at Montana State University. It took 33 years of chapter-wide commitment, accomplished recruiting, and valued elections of chapter officers to bring “Testy Fest” to a level that demanded such a performer. Chapters and individuals can build successful annual events in their local community. It comes with challenges, but the

challenges are opportunities To Make Better Men. Before beginning the process of managing an event, know exactly what you would like to get out of the event, what you would like a participant to gain for attending, and what risks organizers should be aware of. This is when event organizers develop their strategy, set their goals, define the target audience, figure out the type of event, and the price tag. “Knowing what you have and what you need to make is the biggest thing, and that's how budgeting happens,” said Cody Johannes, Alpha Delta Chapter Vice Noble Ruler-Philanthropy. In the case of “Testy Fest” the budget for entertainment doubled to cover Rodney Atkins $50,000 price tag.

It is important to choose an event that resonates with the target audience. and inspires them to give or act.

Developing an event strategy often requires input from marketing, sales, and creative teams, all brought together by an event manager who helps the entire group collaborate on the event’s vision and key coordination.

MEASURE YOUR SUCCESS

Whether it is a formal gala for charity or an ice cream social for recruiting, metrics needed to be tracked. This information varies between events, based on the goal and other key performance indicators. Examples include attendance, donations, sponsorships, media coverage, membership size, and alumni involvement. The established metrics should be different for each event, but there must be something to measure and compare. For an event to grow, organizers need metrics to evaluate then assess the effectiveness of events.

KEEP DETAILED RECORDS OF PAST EVENTS An event cannot grow if there is no baseline understanding of where it started. Keep detailed records of annual events so you will know what to compare in the coming years.

You will use these records to prove what you would like to measure in the future to help improve your event marketing.

Your past event records can also help serve as foundational guidance for how to run events in the future. “It starts with the previous exec team,” said Brother Avery Kenny.

“Knowing what they learned went well and what went wrong and passing that down. Without that, you cannot really know what you are doing at the time.”

Build playbooks and guides with detailed records and step-by-step instructions on how to manage the event.

When exiting chapter officers need to train new chapter officers on how to manage the event, having these records is invaluable for a chapter, person, or professional event.

Brother Kenny said, “In the long run that really pays its dividends.”

LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES Despite best efforts, mistakes happen. It is inevitable that it will occur sometimes. Missteps are unavoidable. What will help you improve your event on a year-on-year basis, however, is how you view those missteps. Do not look at them as mistakes. View them as an opportunity to gain experience and improve. Document any event management errors that occur during your event planning or execution.

Also, document how you went about fixing them. By keeping track of these, you can avoid repeating them in the future.

UTILIZE RESOURCES Look to any number of places: classmates, coworkers, Advisers, family, school leadership, the Home Office, colleagues from other organizations who plan similar events that are like yours. But there is another group of individuals who can help: brothers. The Fraternity is a brotherhood network eager to help. And you do not have to look extremely far. “You have to keep your relationship going with alumni up, they’re going to be your biggest group of FA L L 2023

Prior events supported by the Sayre Fund include the Alpha Gamma Rho National BBQ Competition, Annual Alpha Gamma Rho Fall Shootout, Testy Fest, and many other worthwhile events.

sponsors.” Brother Johannes said. “So, if they know that the chapter is in the right spot, they are going to be more willing to help if you know if they do not think the chapter is in the right spot, then they are not going to help.” More than 30 brothers from other chapters in Arizona, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin traveled to support “Testy Fest” this year.

You can find value in feedback from all of these. Look at your past attendees as your most valuable focus group.

They can supply valuable insight into what aspects of your event were successful and which ones were not. They can help you examine weaknesses that need improvement but can also show you the strengths you need to highlight in your event’s marketing. Your past attendees should be your target audience. There is a good chance that they will be the ones you are marketing your event to in the future as well.

CHANGE WITH THE AUDIENCE No event that takes place on a recurring basis is free from scrutiny for not staying up to date. “You've got to evolve with the times,” said Brother Cody Johannes, Alpha Delta Chapter’s Vice Noble Ruler-Philanthropy. There are no fixed rules to keeping recurring events attractive and appealing to the target audience, but doing so is necessary for long-term success. Brother Johannes believes that is what has happened over the last 33 years of Testy Fest. “I think that we have just made it something

that all people can enjoy. We serve Rocky Mountain oysters there, but that is not necessarily the point of it as much anymore and that is ok. It needed to become something that we can cater to all ages.”

Changing with the audience also means changing with technology. Look at QR codes. Five years ago, scanning a QR code was a novelty and now it is common for a QR Code to be the only way to access a menu. Staying ahead of the curve — whether that means with event programming or technology — is critical to perfecting the user experience from your event.

INCREASE VALUE Successful events offer something of value to guests.

Whether that offering is a meal for a charitable cause, an experience with music, or a tax write-off will differ between events. The type of value also differs on the type of event. (Virtual vs. In-Person). The offering for attendance must grow every on a year-to-year basis for an event to do the same. This could mean developing new experiences, featuring added content, offering untapped resources. If you want to build a stronger base with existing stakeholders, this area becomes even more crucial. Introduce a new, innovative element to make your returning stakeholders feel they are getting something new and different.

“Testy Fest” is on a scale that it could seem daunting to even try. But there are more relatable examples.

FINDS NEW SUCCESS

FINDING MOTIVATION AND FIGHTING COMPLACENCY ENTERING THE 2023 FALL SEMESTER, Beta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville had itself well positioned for another strong start to the school year with its time honored event, AgFest. The welcome back to school dinner with free food and guest speakers takes place at the chapter’s house and is a joint effort with the School of Agriculture.

It continuously saw good attendance, averaging 200 guests each year and performed well as a recruitment tool with minor change since it began in 1977. If Beta Gamma Chapter had continued as before, AgFest 2023 would be a presumptive success. So, the chapter drastically changed it.

The chapter meetings leading up to AgFest 2023 could have been routine. After 44, the coordinating and planning of an event can feel as if they take care of themselves. But the meetings were not routine. Brothers spoke up. They wanted to push the event forward. They wanted to find opportunities to make it better. With demanding work by the brothers, Sept. 18, 2023, was the debut of a much bigger event. It was the debut of AgFest that lived up to its name.

One opportunity the chapter used was the keynote speaker roles. They used those to build relationships with industry professionals, alumni, and the university.

Speakers this year included University of WisconsinPlatteville Chancellor Tammy Evetovich and Brother Ben Huber, Beta Gamma (UW-Platteville), CEO of the agricultural and energy business “Insight FS.” They spoke of how agriculture affected their lives and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

If AgFest 2023 had been like its predecessors, the community would have started leaving as she finished.

But this year, they had reasons to stay. New elements, including a live band, yard games, and a grill-out, gave

people a reason to stay. These new elements created opportunities for better recruitment.

“This immediately improved the event's potential to be a recruitment tool,” shared Beta Gamma Chapter Noble Ruler Issac Ward. AgFest 2023 had more than 300 students, alumni, faculty, and community members attend, a 50% increase from previous years.

Brother Ward said the new elements also created an opportunity for philanthropy. "It gave the Fraternity a chance to fundraise and give back to the School of Agriculture.”

Following this year’s five-hour event, the chapter donated $4,000 to the School of Agriculture. A gift made possible another new element, AgFest Sponsors.

“AgFest was a hit!” Brother Smith confirmed.

“Thank you, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, for hosting us at AgFest,” expressed University of Wisconsin-Platteville Chancellor Tammy Evetovich after the event. The newly appointed chancellor continued, “Great food. Great speakers. Great alumni. Great sense of community!”

As the members of Beta Gamma Chapter look ahead, they know they need to keep growing and pushing each other to reach new heights. “We hope our success this year will continue in the future, building upon our chapter’s legacy of fellowship and service to the school and community.”

To make better events, it is not enough to rest on your laurels. Recurring events must always adapt and enhance.

The challenges of growing and sustaining a year-overyear event are not something most college students have experience with, but it can be possible on any scale in any community. “There's no really set guidelines on how to be a college student on Google and go find a band.” said Brother Kenny. “You just have to be willing to do it.”

WHAT IS HRT? HRT stands for Housing Resources Trust, and, as its name suggests, it is a trust for Alpha Gamma Rho chapter housing. A Board of Trustees manages its funds. Brother Keith Heikes of Alpha Zeta Chapter at Kansas State University is Chairman of the Housing Resources Trust and shared his thoughts on the role and responsibility of HRT in the Fraternity.

The Housing Resources Trust exists to help each chapter maintain housing that is appropriate for its unique circumstances.

This is a broad statement but given the wide range of housing situations that exist within our chapters it is necessarily broad.

The goal of the HRT is to help chapters assess their housing situation and supply guidance as they decide what their best choices are when considering building, remodeling, or buying.

We collaborate with alumni associations and/or housing corporations to conduct an analysis of options. Important considerations include expected demographics for the university, historical and expected chapter size, indebtedness, and fundraising strategy and capability.

The original mission of the Housing Resources Trust was to supply loans for chapter houses. As real estate has appreciated to levels that far exceed the funds available through the HRT, we have evolved to more consultative activity rather than supplying chapter loans.

In the coming years, chapter sustainability will be critical to have appropriately sized houses. Declining university enrollments mean fewer available potential members for all fraternities, and not being able to fill a chapter house could put the chapter in financial difficulty.

Housing for Alpha Gamma Rho chapters is widely varied. Some chapters do not have a chapter house or may share a facility on campus. While at the other end of the spectrum, several chapters’ houses are newly built or recently remodeled. There is no right or wrong – what is important is to have a place that can be “home” for the brothers and a house the brothers can be proud of to help to attract new members.

An Alpha Gamma Rho chapter’s facility should be an inviting place for both members and visitors alike. Brothers should be able to live, eat, study, and bond together in their college homes.

As an alumni corporation and alumni of the Fraternity, it is our job to meet this goal.

Despite the fact HRT is not the same funding entity as when it was first created as the Chapter House Loan Fund, the Board wants to take an active role in helping as many chapters continue to maintain their facility in such a way that collegiate and alumni alike are proud to display. To help chapters and alumni corporations provide modern livinglearning environments for undergraduate members, the Housing Resources Trust Board is excited to announce the creation of the House Improvement Grant program. This program is designed to help alumni groups ease the financial burden of making improvements to a chapter facility and provide a home away from home for the collegiate brothers. As a Board, we recognize that not all alumni corporations have the additional funds to take on every house improvement project or fulfill every renovation for their college home, but as do want to extend a new resource to help make some of these dreams a reality.

The program was first proposed to the HRT Board by Brother Austin Gilliard, Nu (NC State), while he served on the Collegiate Advisory Council this past spring. The HRT Board enthusiastically accepted the proposal following the presentation Brother Gilliard and members of the Collegiate Advisory Council put together.

SO, HOW WILL THIS PROGRAM WORK? As a kickoff to this initiative, the HRT Board set aside $40,000, with a limit of $10,000, for each project. Alumni corporations are encouraged to work collaboratively with their undergraduate members and executive officer teams to identify a need or improvement for the chapter facility. The application is available on the Housing Resources Trust section of the Alpha Gamma Rho website. Applications are accepted annually and should include full details about the project and how all members can benefit from this improvement. Once the project has been completed, the chapter will submit a final report to the HRT Board on the project and if it achieved the desired outcomes.

The HRT Board is excited to assist as many chapters as possible through this new program and see how these funds can be put to beneficial use to enhance the climate and culture of our chapter houses.

In addition to the House Improvement Grant program, there are other resources still available provided through HRT. If alumni corporations are considering more significant renovations or building a new chapter house, they can have a Housing Assessment completed to review the overall health and durability of the current chapter house. These assessments allow alumni corporations to determine a clear path forward.

Overall, the HRT Board exists to help chapters and alumni corporations understand how to maintain, repair, and provide a quality college home for our collegiate members and HRT stands ready to assist any alumni corporation looking for shortor long-term improvements to their chapter houses.

Q&AGR Housemother Cindra Brandl Since her move in 2007, the Housemother for Kappa Chapter at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has been dedicated to shaping young men into better individuals.

Housemother Cindra "Cindi" Brandl, better known as Mom Cindy by the Brothers, enjoys "puttering."

Puttering describes her habit of strolling around the chapter house and yard, wherever the brother might be, observing the activities of undergraduate members.

It's while she is puttering that she finds her best chance to connect with these young men and get to know them better.

Cindi's introduction to the world of AGR began at a wedding, where a friend suggested she would be an excellent fit for the recently opened Housemother position at Kappa Chapter. Initially uninterested and holding stereotypes associated with fraternity life, after a few months of persuasion she decided to submit an application. She received an interview offer shortly thereafter and during the interview she realized the true nature of the fraternity – a community of young men striving to better themselves. Touched by this revelation, she began writing a Thank You note to the young men but received a phone call offering her the position before she could send it, an offer she gladly accepted.

As she commenced her role as a motherly figure to the young men, she initially served as an observer.

Gradually, opportunities arose for her to assist these young men. Given her background in Family,

Home, and Consumer Economics, tasks like ironing or sewing on a button were a natural starting point. Over time, as she built relationships with them, small tasks that could help lighten their load turned into opportunities to impart motherly advice, all the while emphasizing that she is "Mom" and not their mother. Her primary mission is to encourage them to develop the skills they need for life after graduation and to help them learn to recognize when something needs to be done.

Mom Cindi's foremost goal as a Housemother is, “to empower them to live independently and acquire the skills necessary for a selfsufficient life.”

She also aspires to educate them on how they can become valuable assets in their communities when they graduate from the University of Nebraska and embark on their own careers and

families. Furthermore, she consistently encourages the Brothers to maintain contact with each other and finds joy in hearing about the enduring relationships the young men cultivate in the chapter house and how these bonds persist as they become alumni.

Mom Cindi actively contributes to enhancing the Brothers' college experience. Through the lessons she imparts, young men learn to embody gentlemanly behavior, including etiquette, appropriate attire, such as when to wear a suit or a tie, and more. Given that many chapter members come from agricultural backgrounds, her aspiration is for them to transition seamlessly from the farm to college to a professional career and feel equally at ease in both environments.

Mom Cindi doesn't limit her influence to Nebraska alone. She holds the position of Housemother/ House Director Coordinator

for the National Fraternity, a role she has fulfilled since September 2019. In this capacity, she serves as a mentor to the 26 other Housemothers/ House Directors and acts as a resource for chapters seeking to hire Housemothers/House Directors. She maintains active communication with her colleagues, providing support and encouragement.

Additionally, she distributes a newsletter biannually to facilitate communication among the Housemothers.

Mom Cindi actively serves as a positive representative of Alpha Gamma Rho to all she meets. She aims to dispel misconceptions about fraternity men and help people understand the good that comes from being a member of a Greek organization. She expresses that she is "very blessed to be at AGR and cannot imagine her life without the experience of being a Mom." FA L L 2023

Brothers Holding Brothers Accountable

by Rex Martin REMEMBER WHEN YOU were young, maybe five or six years old, and you did something your parents or teacher told you not to do? What was your reaction when you got caught? Most of us probably tried to explain away why we did not eat that cookie or how our new clothes got dirty. We all know the story (a myth) about George Washington cutting down the cherry tree and when confronted by his father, said he could not lie it was he who cut it down.

Remarkable story completely made up for one of the first biographies of the First President to help it sell. The real world works a little differently.

We are all accountable to someone or something. It could be your family, job, or even yourself. When we joined Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity, we signed the Covenant, and we are accountable for following that Covenant. Now, none of us are perfect and mistakes happen. The key is us holding each other accountable to the highest standards of our Fraternity when we falter. This does not end when you leave college. In fact, alumni should still strive to meet those same provisions. But it is hard sometimes…. help is on the way!

Many alumni have given money and time toward our Capital Campaign for Local Chapter Excellence. At Top Leaders Institute, paid for by that campaign, all chapters throughout the nation will have the opportunity to learn from each other and help build that accountability. The participation of alumni will enhance Top Leaders 32

Institute as it goes Fraternity-wide in 2024. This leadership program is the heart of making better chapters that Make Better Men. It is crucial that we embark upon continuous improvement as leaders. Why?

Leaders inspire accountability through their ability to accept responsibility before they place blame

Overall college enrollment is dropping, and male enrollment is decreasing even faster. It will take strong chapters with men who are accountable to recruit and develop

the next generation of brothers.

Alumni have an obligation to help our collegiate brothers. Help can come in many fashions: mentoring, sweat equity, or even scholarship dollars.

We all owe a great debt to AGR which helped shape our future. Let us all be accountable to help shape their future.

Our brotherhood should inspire us to hold one another accountable. We will make mistakes and falter sometimes. It is important to own those missteps, learn from them, and strive to do better.

When we do this, it makes our accomplishments even sweeter.

Our Roots

The Character we portray as AGR brothers include honesty and displaying a keen sense of moral and ethical strength. As equal members of the Fraternity, we are Loyal to the Alpha Gamma Rho name and devoted to honoring its rich history while keeping an eye on future endeavors.

Change occurs everywhere, from our membership, chapters, campuses, and professional lives, and the need for Adaptability is necessary to meet these ever-changing environments.

Making Better Men through CLASS THROUGHOUT ALPHA GAMMA Rho’s history, the Fraternity often looks to its past leaders for guidance and wisdom about current situations.

As a fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho’s main Purpose is To Make Better Men, and through them a broader and better agriculture. Brother Cal Willemssen, Alpha Phi (South Dakota State), extended AGR’s Purpose as Grand President from 2014–16, by challenging each brother, each chapter, every day to be a fraternity of CLASS.

By Brother Willemssen’s definition, a CLASS Fraternity, is one where Character is mandatory, Loyalty is expected, Adaptability is embraced, Stewardship is routine, and Service is a habit. When you think about these words from his State of the Fraternity address at the 2016 National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska, they are as applicable today as they were back then. At the time, National Leaders also recognized then, and they still do today, that struggles and challenges

AGR continued to be an adaptable fraternity by not letting the times or circumstances dictate who we are as an organization. The worthwhile investment of funds embodies Stewardship to ensure the contribution of all members effectively puts to use the knowledge gained through National Fraternity events or educational resources and shared with brothers in our chapters. Each of AGR’s chapters engage through Service to their campus and community through philanthropic efforts designed to make an impact in the area we call home.

Each brother should strive to stand for themselves by the values the founders built AGR upon and to do so with a CLASS mindset.
