Whatactivitiesareyoucomfortabledoing?Iamalistmakerand planner.Idonotliketowaituntilthelastminutetocompleteatask.So, myactionsareto“chunkout”atasktocompleteovertime.WhenI beganmyeducationalcareer,Iobservedateacherwithexcellent classroommanagement.Watchinghertechniquesandattemptingto imitateherprecisely,Iquicklylearnedthatwouldnotworkformeand mytalents.Atfirst,IthoughtthatthismeantIwouldnotbeagood teacher.Iadjustedthedisciplineplantomeetmyskillsandtalents.The planreflectedmystrengthsandbenefitedtheJuniorHighstudentsI taught.
Leadersmustfocusontheirinnatestrengthsastheyprogressthrough thedifferentleadershiprolesthroughouttheirlives.Focusondeveloping theseskillsasyoudevelopyouruniqueleadershipstylebasedonyour

ReflectandRevise: MyTopTenTeacherHelps Atthebeginningofeachschoolyear,teacherspreparecontentplans,classroom proceduresandorganizefilesandactivities.Throughouttheyear,teachersare reflectingonlessonsandprocedurestocontinuewhatworksandanalyzewhat changesshouldbemadetomakethelessonorprocedurebetter.Astheschool yearcomestoaclose,itisagoodhabittoreflectontheyearasawholeand revisewhereneeded Yes,reflectingandrevisingisapracticethatshouldbe repeatedthroughouttheyear.
AsIreflectedandrevisedovermy20yearsofbeinganeducator,IwishIcould havetoldmyselftheseteacherhelpsinmyfirstyearofteaching HerearemyTop 10TeacherHelps.
1 SetupaGooglefolderbyclass,thenbyunit Youcandrilldownevenmore byassessment,classworkactivity,etc,althoughfilescanbeharderto locatewithtoomanyfolders.Iprefertheless-is-morepractice.
2.Setup3-ringbinderswithpaperassignments,includingassessmentswith answerkeysinsheetprotectors.Thismakeslocating,revisingandaddingpostitnotestohelpremindtheteacherforthefuture.
3.Setupaplasticfileboxwithhangingfoldersbyunit.Thisisagreatplaceto keepyouractivities,smallgrouptasks,manipulatives,etc.Asyoucreateand collectadditionalactivities,youcanaddadditionalfileboxestohousethem.
4.TeachyourstudentsAmericanSignLanguage(ASL)fortherestroom,yes, no,metoo,etc.Restroom,yes,andnoworkgreattoallowsilent communicationbetweenthestudentandtheteacher,whichallowsthe teachertoseamlesslycontinueteaching.Metooisgreatforstudentsto showtheyhadthesameanswerwhenanotherstudentwascalledon,and feelliketheyreceivedcreditforthecorrectanswer.Otherwordscanbe taught,basedontheneedsoftheclassroom.
5 PencilStationonthemagneticwhiteboard Gettingmagneticclipstohold thepencils.Whenastudentborrowsone,he/shewritehis/hernameonthe boardnexttothemagneticclip.Whenclassisover,thestudentreturnsthe pencilanderaseshis/hername.Thissavedmypencilstash,soIwasnot constantlyhavingtorefillmysupply.
ReflectandRevise: 6.Laminateeverythingyouaregoingtopostonyourclassroomwallsandall activities Thissavedmesomuchtimebynothavingtorecreateitemseach year.Ialsolearnedthatregularpaperworksbetterthancardstock.The thicknessofthecardstockcanbeseparatedwithalotofuse Ifyouplanto usesomethingmorethanonce,laminateit.
7 AssignmentsNotTurnedInGoogleForm Thisformwascreatedfor electronicassignmentsthatwerenotturnedin(NTI).Itwasadefinitetime saverandrecorderofwhenassignmentswereturnedin.AfterIcreatedthe GoogleSheetsfromtheGoogleForm,Iaddedtwocolumnstotherightofthe questionsanswered:DateCompletedandComments.Thissavedmoretime andgriefwhenastudentturnedinanNTI Studentswouldtellmeand/or theirparentstheyhadcompletedtheNTI,andmanytimesIwenttograde theassignment,anditwasnotcomplete.Adefinitetimesaverforelectronic assignments.
8 Parent-Guardian/TeacherCommunicationLog Thislogmakesiteasyto recordcommunicationwithparents/guardians.Thelogcanbeaccessedvia alaptop,iPad,iPhone,etc.Ipreferhavingeverythingdigitalifpossible.Ihave atabforeachclass.
9.SetupaStudentStation.Onatableorbookshelf,youcanhaveeverything astudentcouldneed:astapler,atapedispenser,apencilsharpener, paperclips,linedpaper,printerpaper,markers,gluesticks,etc Ihavea“News forYou”bulletinboardinthisarea,foraone-stopshopformystudents’ needs
10.Takecareofyourself!Justlikeonanairplane,youputyouroxygenmask onfirst,thenthechildreninyourcare.Youneedtocarveouttimeforyourself toworkout,playasport,doneedlework,read,weekendtravel,spendtime withfamily/friends,basicallyanythingthatrejuvenatesyouandkeepsyou physicallyandemotionallyhealthy.Thisisimportant!
TheaforementionedTopTenTeacherHelpshavebeendevelopedafterreflecting onwhatworkedinmyclass Ihopethesehelpyouasyouprogressfrombeinga newteachertoaseasonedone.Alloftheseweredevelopedtosupportthe teachingofmystudents.Thesearejustmytoptensupports.Yourschoolandclass maybedifferentfrommine,sousewhatworksforyouandmakerevisionsas neededforyou,yourclassroomandmostimportantly,yourstudents.
