Your First Year Teaching 101
You have finally heard the words “We want you to teach on our campus. We want you for our students! Welcome!” Excited! Apprehensive. Boldness! Scared. Confident! How do I handle all these kids? Here are three helpful bricks to use during your rookie year to build a foundation for a successful career. Campus: Don’t Stay Isolated. Faculty and Staff are Friends you haven’t met yet! Be open and flexible with your administration. Talk with them! Share good things…ask for advice on a situation…invite them in. Always clarify what is expected time-wise, work-wise, planning, etc. Get to know your office manager and other office staff. Good morning can go a long way to begin their hectic day. Build a strong relationship and show appreciation for your custodian staff. They will become your best friends, especially if your job is in the performing or visual arts with concerts, programs, and showcases.
