This includes making our building as accessible as possible, making ticket prices affordable and adapting performances to suit different needs. We’re always looking to improve and encourage feedback, so please do get in touch if you think you can help us improve our access. Hello, Thanks for picking up this brochure, and welcome to Alphabetti Theatre.
PAY PAYYOUWHATFEELWHATYOUFEEL Pay What You Feel You pay what you feel you can afford. Why? We believe everyone should be able to enjoy great art, no matter their financial situation. You pay at the end of the show, it’s anonymous and you can pay with cash or card. This system relies on your honesty, so thank you in advance. It is also vital that if you have booked a ticket but then cannot attend the performance that you tell us as soon as possible.

If you’re new - where have you been? And if you’re returning - ‘welkom terug’as the Dutch would say. You’ve all been missed – and either way you’re in for a treat. This brochure is but a smattering of what we have to offer; over the next 8 months we have a planned 270 performances! We can’t fit it all in here, otherwise we’d be distributing an encyclopaedia and not just a brochure. So, visit our website to keep up to date.
RELAXEDPERF.RELAXEDPERF. Relaxed
At the time of writing this welcome (June 2022), we’ve finally eased all pandemic restrictions and are quietly hopeful the worst of Covid-19 is behind us: we have just begun to welcome back full-capacity audiences, wa-hoo! However, we are reviewing our Covid policy fortnightly and publishing any changes on our website and social media channels, so please continue to check there for new information. As a small-scale arts organisation, we’re used to living on a financial knife edge; however, this last year-and-a-bit has seen the knife getting sharper. It has been a real balancing act. I would like to personally thank every artist, audience member and funder who has supported us. My biggest thanks go to the incredible team that keeps Alphabetti ticking. From our General Assistants all the way to the Trustees, everyone has gone above and beyond to not just keep the theatre open, but to continue improving it, by sticking to our aims of entertaining, challenging, and improving lives for our artists, audiences and participants. If you would like to support the work we do then please see the back of this brochure or visit our website.
welcome Afternoon performances, usually relaxed
After listening to you, our audiences, artists and participants, we’ve decided to trial a new ticketing system. We believe great art should be for everyone, regardless of financial situation. And that’s why - out of our 270 performances - 43% are being charged at Pay What You Feel, with the remaining 57% being ticketed. We’ll have three price categories: General, Concession (Over 65, Student, Artist, Unemployment Benefit, Disability Benefit), and No Questions (for those who can’t afford the other tickets and can’t attend a Pay What You Feel performance, you can book this ticket no questions asked). Complimentary tickets are available for PAs supporting those with access requirements (please contact the theatre). Please note proof of Concession eligibility may be requested on arrival at the box office.

Hazel Monaghan, Rob Green, Siobhán Cannon-Brownlie & Alphabetti Theatre a PREMIERE THIS SHOW IS RUBBISH by Hazel Monaghan directed by Siobhán Cannon-Brownlie music and composition by Rob Green WAKEPLASTIC?ME UP WHEN IT’S ALL OVER!
Wave (yes, Wave) is only ten years old. The planet only has ten years left. Not every kid saves up for a litter picker. Or decides to clean every beach in the world (starting with Newcastle). Or talks to ducks. But every kid wants to be a hero, so Wave isn’t that unusual, really. She’s got a bucket, a plan and a secret, and it’ll take a displaced toy, a delusional community support officer and a beachful of surprises to discover it. Within this musical adventure is the story of a mother and daughter, and how the things that divide them could also be what unites them.

HIP-HOP DANCE THEATRE TOLD WITH INFECTIOUS JOY AND MISCHIEVOUS SMILES. Brotherhood highlights the unknown struggles of young Black men living in the UK. Originally from Africa and the Caribbean, this all-Black cast of multi-talented longtime friends will share their origin stories of perseverance through dance and music. Societal pressures will not change them; they meet every challenge with an infectious joy and mischievous smiles. Holding tight to their roots through racism and prejudice, this unique tale of family and love will be one that sticks with you long after you first see it. Originally conceived through an Emerge+See Breakin’ Convention commission with a performance at Dance City, March ‘22. Development supported by The National Lottery Jubilee Fund. Vitamin Noir are a group of young men (and a woman) living in Newcastle upon Tyne. They are made up of dancers, rappers, artists, photographers, and all-around creatives who bring contagious energy to everything they do. When you’re a small-time drug dealer in Cardiff, it’s tough living up to your family’s expectations. Marc spends his time avoiding his mum, disguising his cannabis plants with fake tomatoes, and bailing out his old man, who owes £6,000 to local loan shark Oggy. When Marc meets Lisa for the first time in years, things get even messier. Lisa wants Marc. Only, Oggy wants Lisa. Marc just wants to survive the day.
“STONKING GOOD FUN” THE STAGE

Joanna’s going out tonight. Her boots are on, her phone’s in her pocket and she is going to dance until dawn. She isn’t going to think about how good a picture this would be, how happy everyone would be if she shared it, how she should share it, should prove she was there. Joanna lives in two worlds, one old and one new, and sometimes it’s hard to tell which is more real. Just for tonight, her phone’s going down, her hands are going up, and she’d like to share with you.
Out-Out! is a development of Joana Geronimo’s recent work as part of Alphabetti Theatre’s Reaction Artist programme. Joyful, bright and lyrical, it brings people together in a moment of connection, and reminds us all that some things can’t be downloaded. Joana Geronimo Joana Geronimo

Elsa’s life has never been boring, though it’s often been a struggle. She doesn’t know why she never quite fits in, perhaps it’s just the way she’s made? She’s quirky and kind and clever and funny, but school was always a nightmare, and romance was a mystery; until now. Elsa meets Carmen who just seems to ‘get her’. Carmen sets her on the road to finding the key to who she is, and why it feels like there’s an octopus living inside her head.

Put your money where your mouth is! If you can. If you can’t, please keep shouting about us. Alphabetti Theatre is an award-winning independent 80 seat theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne. We believe great art should be for everyone, regardless of financial situation. We are a space to experiment, evolve and discover excellence for artist, audience and participant. Annually we average 300 performances, supporting 1,250 artists and welcoming 12,000 audience members. We were built out of necessity by artists and the local community. We need your support to continue to develop the North East's performing arts ecology and to better the lives of the people we come into contact with. Your monthly donation will keep the doors open and the lights on, allowing us to continue the work we do.
