A Message from our TxOLAN President and our Event Coordinator: Gina Glasscock On behalf of the TxOLAN Board of Directors, we enthusiastically welcome you to the 2015 TxOLAN Alpaca Spectacular. We are delighted we can share this special event with you and look forward to your contribution to our development of the alpaca livestock and fiber markets.

Our association and show are committed to promoting and educating all things alpaca.

As President of TxOLAN and Event Coordinator for the TxOLAN Show, I encourage you to take advantage of the many educational resources and networking opportunities this competitive event provides. I hope you will find this event a rewarding experience.

Our 2015 show is set to be a very fashion forward show premiering North American designers in alpaca clothing and accessory lines. A full-blown fashion show will use adorable alpacas as arm candy. How often do we get to promote the world’s finest livestock arm in arm with the world’s finest apparel?

On that note, the Texas State 4-H Alpaca Service Project is off to a flying start. Thanks to our supporters we have a combined 70 donations for the 4-H project and a record new project enrollment with over 50 signed up.

Surveys have been tallied up for the formation of a number of committees. Our strategic planning committee will be targeting both short term (under two years) and long term (five years) association goals. Your survey responses asked for membership and marketing committees that will come to fruition in the next 12 months.

We are always looking for new ideas and/or different perspectives to keep our events fresh and relevant to the needs of our members and exhibitors. It goes without saying that the most effective way of getting involved in your commitment is to well…get involved. Please consider a position on new committees to produce membership value, activities and events that are of personal interest to you. We are very open to listening to our members and what their needs are.

TxOLAN 2015 Certified AOA Show Judges Amanda VandenBosch is a Senior AOA Halter and Fleece Judge and an Alpaca Judge Trainer and Instructor in the United States. Amanda qualified as an International Alpaca Judge trained in Peru at the International Alpaca Judging School (IAJS ) in 2000. She has judged shows in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and Peru gaining an international perspective and true love for the art and science of alpaca judging.

Amanda travels worldwide judging alpacas, instructing, presenting seminars and workshops to breeders and judges. Her “hands on” approach is greatly sought after. Amanda worked with the British Alpaca Society (BAS) for 7 years to help develop the Judge Training Program, and with the New Zealand Judges for continuous training. She has been honored with regular appointments as an AOA Senior Instructor and Judge Trainer in both Fleece and Halter in the USA. Amanda has spent many hours volunteering over the years at AOBA National Conferences, and regional events, she has participated on numerous committees. She is past president of CALPACA a Regional Affiliate and past co-chair of the Judges Advisory Committee (JAC). Currently she acts as a liaison for the Judge Training & Certification Committee. Amanda has had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading experts in the study of alpacas.

Amanda is a native of the United Kingdom. She traveled and worked for The National Stud (UK) Lindsay Park Stud (Australia) and Lanes End Farm (Kentucky, USA) the premier thoroughbred breeding operations worldwide.

In 1991 she settled in the USA. For the last 23 years, Amanda has been involved with alpacas in all aspects.

Amanda is also a co-author of the book “The Art & Science of Alpaca Judging” published by AOBA and used as a training tool. With her husband, Vince, and two sons, Cody and Hunter, they operate Flying Dutchman Alpacas, in Bend, Oregon, successfully raising both huacayas and suris. Along with raising high quality breeding stock, they also own a partnership in Spring Harvest Mill, completing the circle of taking fleece to processing and end use, with these fine products being offered for sale at their local business Tumalo Coffee House.

Arturo Pena is from Arequipa, Peru. He has an educational background in animal science and management. In 2003, he moved to the United States, since then he has been working as a herd manager for large alpaca farms operation. His fascination for alpacas and its luxury product "The Fleece" motivated him to get into the AOBA Judging Apprentice Program. He completed his training and become an AOBA Certified Halter, Performance and Fleece Judge for both Huacayas and Suris. Arturo, his wife Kat and son Nicholas recently moved to the East Coast area.

Arturo believes that education and mentoring are the keys to promote and develop a strong Alpaca industry.

Alpaca Facts Physical Characteristics:  Two kinds of Alpacas: Huacaya (wah-KI'-ya) and Suri (surrey)  Huacaya fiber is short, dense, crimpy and gives a woolly appearance  Suri fiber is silky and resembles pencil-like locks  Short and low set tail  Soft padded feet with two toes  No horns, hooves, claws or incisors  Eat grass and chew cud  Adult alpacas generally weigh between 150 and 200 lbs.  Average height is 36 inches at the withers  Have three stomachs  Adaptable to any climate History:  Members of the Camelid family  Native to Andean Mountain range of South America  Primarily found in Peru, Bolivia, and Chile  Provided clothing and transportation to the Incas  First commercially imported into the United States in 1984  Current figures note over 100,000 registered alpacas in the U.S. Reproduction  Average lifespan is about 20 years  Gestation is 11.5 months  Female alpaca normally gives birth, without assistance, in the daylight hours  Baby alpacas are called crias  Have single births. Twins are extremely rare. Most recent figures note 1 in 2000 is a twin Behavior:  Alert, intelligent, curious, and predictable  Social animals that seek companionship  Communicate by softly humming  Also communicate with neck posturing, ear and tail positioning and head tilt  Deposit their odorless bean-like pellets in concentrated areas Maintenance/Care:  Sheared without harm every 12 to 18 months  Require minimal fencing. They can be pastured at 5-10 per acre  Virtually disease-resistant animals  Require annual vaccinations with tetanus and other locally appropriate vaccines  Need routine parasite control  Need occasional nail and/or teeth trimming Fiber:  In ancient times, alpaca fiber was known as the "Fiber of Gods"  Compared to cashmere  Stronger, lighter yet warmer than wool  Hypo-allergenic and contains no lanolin  Naturally fire-retardant  Comes in 22 natural colors 16
