Dear Friends, There is nothing like a great team assisting you in building a creation — a group of collaborators who are brilliant in their given fields eager combining their knowledge with other makers, to forge powers, and create something together.

The team’s unique expertise and individual voices brings the discovered treasures of a lifetime of thought and excavation.

Each collaborator brings years of investigation and experience in the wonder, joy and comic/tragedy; in the ongoing, ever-evolving series of life on planet Earth.

LINES extraordinary 11 dancers are joining with Charles Lloyd and Jason Moran, Jim Campbell, Jim French, Philip Perkins and a host of administrators, supporters and contributors like you who make these works possible.

The San Francisco premiere opening this evening’s performance is a restaging for LINES of The Personal Element which was commissioned by Damian Woetzel, Artistic Director of the Vail Dance Festival and President of Juilliard. The Personal Element premiered with four members of LINES and four members of New York City Ballet with music composed by Jason Moran. The second work is the world premiere of AZOTH with music composed by Charles Lloyd and Jason Moran.

We are also celebrating LINES dancer Michael Montgomery’s 10 th anniversary of stellar dancing with the company. He came directly from our BFA program and toured with LINES in Korea prior to his graduation. In these last ten years, he has performed in over 700 performances in 27 countries. In The Propelled Heart, Michael sang a duet with the phenomenal Lisa Fischer, and last season he composed and sang in part of the music of Polestar.

A roster of ballets that were born from these premiere seasons in San Francisco, live not only here, but are toured to share with others in countries and theatres around the globe. We merge with the larger community of San Francisco, and into the world, with each ballet produced, each student impacted through our training programs, and each offering for the community.

None of this could happen without the team. We are ever grateful to the generous supporters who believe in this work. We are committed to diving deeper and to building more works with brilliant collaborators as we have done for 37 years.

INSPIRATION FROM ALONZO The concept of transmuting lead into gold is a symbol of the actual work of alchemy. The idea was to transform the base metals, the Earth, into pure metals.

Symbolically speaking the Earth is humankind. To transmute the lead into gold refers to transforming the mind and the heart, into spiritual gold.

Azoth was believed to be the essential agent of transformation in alchemy. It is the name given by ancient alchemists to mercury, the animating spirit hidden in all matter that makes transmutation possible. Because the Azoth is believed to contain the complete information of the whole universe, it is also used as another word for the Philosopher’s Stone.

The “A” and “Z” in the word relate to the Greek alpha and omega, the beginning and end of all things. The word is meant to embrace the full meaning of the One Thing, which is both the chaotic First Matter at the beginning of the Work and the perfected Stone at its conclusion.

There is nothing that is made or formed without a line. Straight and Circle encompass all that we see. Whatever can be seen is formed by a line. In mathematics, it is a straight or curved continuous extent of length without breadth. Lines are in our fingerprints, the shapes of our bodies, constellations, geometry. It implies genealogical connection, progeny and spoken word. It marks the starting point and finish. It addresses direction, communication, and design. A line of thought. A boundary or eternity. A melodic line. The equator.

COMPANY PROFILES

ALONZO KING (Founder and Artistic Director) has been called a visionary choreographer who is altering the way we look and think about movement. King calls his works ‘thought structures,’ created by the manipulation of energies that exist in matter through laws, which govern the shapes and movement directions of everything that exists. Named as a choreographer with ”astonishing originality” by the New York Times, Alonzo King LINES Ballet has been guided by his unique artistic vision since 1982.

King has works in the repertories of the Royal Swedish Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Ballet Bejart, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Alvin Ailey, Hong Kong Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Hubbard Street and many others. He has collaborated with distinguished visual artists, musicians and composers across the globe. His work has been recognized for its impact on the cultural fabric of the company’s home in San Francisco, as well as internationally by the dance world’s most prestigious institutions. Named a Master of Choreography by the Kennedy Center in 2005, King is the recipient of the NEA Choreographer’s Fellowship, the Jacob’s Pillow Creativity Award, the US Artist Award in Dance, NY Bessie Award, and the National Dance Project’s Residency and Touring Awards. In 2015, he received the Doris Duke Artist Award in recognition of his ongoing contributions to the advancement of contemporary dance. Joining historic icons in the field, King was named one of America’s “Irreplaceable Dance Treasures” by the Dance Heritage Coalition. He is a former San Francisco commissioner, and a writer and lecturer on humanity and art. He holds an honorary Doctorate from Dominican University, California Institute of the Arts, and The Juilliard School.

ROBERT ROSENWASSER (Founder and Interim Executive Director) shapes the aesthetic and artistic direction of each project at the Company, including conceptual design and production.

In addition to his work with LINES Ballet, he has designed for Ballet de Monte Carlo, Ballet Bejart, the Royal Swedish Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Mr. Rosenwasser has also collaborated with artists and poets Richard Tuttle, Kiki Smith, Cecilia Vicuna, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge and Barbara Guest. His work can be found at the New York Museum of Modern Art in the Department of Books and Illustrated Prints, at the Whitney Museum, and at the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library.

Alongside his artistic work with LINES Ballet, as General Manager for 32 years, he built the Company’s touring program into one of the nations most expansive. Mr. Rosenwasser grew up in New York, attending Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, Cooper Union and California Institute of the Arts.

COLLABORATOR PROFILES CHAR LE S LLOY D

From an early age, NEA Jazz Master Charles Lloyd, immersed himself in the rich musical life of Memphis, Tennessee. He began playing the saxophone at 9 years. Pianist, Phineas Newborn, quickly became his mentor. His closest friend in high school was trumpeter, Booker Little. As a teenager, Lloyd worked in Phineas Senior’s band, while also playing in the Blues bands of B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Johnnie Ace, Bobbie “Blue” Bland, and others.

Lloyd was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Lloyd moved to Los Angeles in 1956 where he earned a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California.While in school, Lloyd played in Gerald Wilson’s big band, and performed with Shostakovich. Lloyd went on to perform and compose for Chico Hamilton and Cannonball Adderley. In 1965, he formed a quartet with pianist, Keith Jarrett, bassist, Cecil McBee, and drummer, Jack DeJohnette. It was a meeting of straight-ahead post-bop, free jazz, rock, and world music. This quickly caught the attention of jazz fans and critics. They established a lot of “firsts” in jazz history; first jazz group to play in the famed Fillmore, first jazz group to play the Bergen Classical Music Festival, first jazz group to perform in the former Soviet Union independent of any government sponsorship, and first jazz group to sell over one million copies with his recording “Forest Flower, Live at Monterey.”

At the height of his success, Lloyd became disillusioned with the ‘music business’ and stopped performing. He retreated to Big Sur California in the early 1970s. Following a near death experience in 1986, Lloyd rededicated himself to music. In 1989 he began recording for ECM Records. Noteworthy albums include “Fish Out of Water,” “Canto,” “Voice In the Night,” “The Water Is Wide”(Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Larry Grenadier, Billy Higgins) “Lift Every Voice” (featuring Geri Allen ) and “Sangam” (Zakir Hussain, Eric Harland).

His ‘New Quartet’ with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland has made three recordings; Rabo de Nube, Mirror, and “Passin’ Thru”. His group “The Marvels” with Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz, Reuben Rogers, Eric Harland, released “I Long To See You” (2016) and “Vanished Gardens” (2018) a collaboration with the great American singer/poet, Lucinda Williams. Recent commissions include the “Wild Man Dance Suite” (2013) which expands his quartet formation to include adds Greek lyra and cimbalom to his group, and “Red Waters, Black Sky” (2017) a multimedia presentation with his quintet, string quartet and choir. Lloyd records for Blue Note Records, he was recently named to the rank of ‘Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters’ by the French Minister of Culture.

Jazz pianist, composer, and artist Jason Moran hails from Houston, TX. He’s an alumnus of the Manhattan School of Music where he studied with Jaki Byard. Upon graduation, he studied with Andrew Hill and Muhal Richard Abrams. Moran’s 18-year relationship with Blue Note Records produced 9 highly acclaimed recordings. His groundbreaking trio, The Bandwagon (with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits) is currently celebrating their 20th anniversary.

Moran’s performances with Cassandra Wilson, Charles Lloyd, and the late Sam Rivers reveal the scope of Moran’s partnerships and music making. He’s also worked with visual artists Adrian Piper, Joan Jonas, Glenn Ligon, Adam Pendleton, Lorna Simpson, and Kara Walker, Stan Douglas and others. Recent awards and fellowships include the MacArthur Foundation, US Artists, Doris Duke Foundation and Ford Foundation.

Moran collaborated with his wife, the mezzo-soprano/composer Alicia Hall Moran, as named artists in the 2012 Whitney Biennial, constructing BLEED, a five-day series of live performances spanning Motown to acupuncture to dance. They also created WORK SONGS for the 2015 Venice Biennial and continue to produce albums for their record label,YES RECORDS. Since his first album, he has produced fourteen additional albums, created scores for Ava DuVernay’s films Selma and 13th, and author Ta-Nehisi Coates’ staged version of Between the World and Me. History is a recurring theme for Moran, who has mounted monumental touring works for Thelonious Monk (IN MY MIND: Monk at Town Hall 1959), Fats Waller (Fats Waller Dance Party, plus a Grammy-nominated album All Rise: An Elegy for Fats Waller) and James Reese Europe (James Reese Europe and the Absence of Ruin).

In 2018, Moran’s first solo museum exhibition opened at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, and traveled to ICA/Boston. The exhibition opens at the Whitney Museum of American Art in September 2019. Moran is currently the Artistic Director for Jazz at The Kennedy Center, teaches at New England Conservatory and Jazz Ahead, and curates the Artist’s Studio series for Park Avenue Armory in New York City.

COLLABORATOR PROFILES JIM C A MP B EL L (Image Technology) San Franciscobased light artist, Campbell is known for his innovative installations. Born in Chicago, Campbell earned degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum,The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. As an engineer, he holds more than a dozen patents in the field of video image processing. His “Day for Night” is a permanent LED exhibit at the top of the new Salesforce Tower in San Francisco and features moving images of Alonzo King LINES Ballet Dancers.

DESIGNER PROFILES J I M F R E N C H (Lighting Design) Designs broadly in the performing arts and live events. Selected Dance credits include; Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, Bandaloop, Ballett Basel, Ballet West, Ballet San Jose, Carte Blanche, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Introdans, LA Dance Project, Pascal Rioult, RAW Dance, San Francisco Ballet, Texas Ballet Theater, and Twyla Tharp Dance. Jim is the lighting supervisor at San Francisco Ballet, and has toured extensively across the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America. www.jimfrenchld.com.

P H I L I P P E R K I N S (Sound Design) Philip Perkins has served as LINES Ballet’s sound designer since 2012, and was cocomposer of Alonzo King’s ballet Figures of Speech. Other choreographers he has worked with include Rashaun Mitchell, Risa Jaroslow, Charlotte Griffen and Mary Oslund. He has released 21 albums of his own music and sound works, was a member of The Residents band 1979-84 (and cinematographer of most of their early videos), a member of The Bifurcators (with Scott Fraser) 1990--2008 and has engineered music for Tom Waits, Fred Frith, Frederika von Stade, negativland, Phillippe Jaroussky, Kronos Quartet, Pauline Oliveros, Zakir Hussein, Rova Sax Quartet, Charles Lloyd, The Hub and many others.

Directors he has mixed film projects for include Errol Morris, Oliver Stone, John Korty, Rob Nilsson, Albert Maysles, Emiko Omori, Debra Chasnoff, Gene Corr and Nancy Kelly.

DA N C E R PRO F I L E S ROBB BERESFORD was born and raised in Elmira, Ontario.

Beresford trained at Canada’s National Ballet School, is a graduate of The Quinte Ballet School of Canada, and has taken part in Festival Dance at the Banff Centre for four summers.

Beresford has danced professionally with Ballet Kelowna, Vancouver’s Joe Ink, and Ballet Victoria. Beresford joined LINES Ballet in 2013.

ADJI CISSOKO grew up in Munich, Germany where she trained at Ballet Academy Munich. Cissoko attended the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre in New York City on full scholarship, before joining the National Ballet of Canada in 2010. In 2012 she was awarded the Patron Award of Merit by the Patrons’ Council Committee of The National Ballet of Canada. Cissoko joined LINES Ballet in 2014.

MADELINE DEVRIES grew up in Southern California studying at the Santa Clarita Ballet Academy. She continued her training at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School and PNBS Professional Division program on full scholarship, spending summers with the Houston Ballet, The Rock School, PNB, and National Ballet of Canada. DeVries apprenticed with the Semperoper Ballet in Dresden, Germany in 2012, and in 2013 she danced with the Seattle based contemporary companies Whim W’Him and Coriolis. DeVries joined LINES Ballet in 2014.

LORRIS EICHINGER started training in Grenoble at the National Conservatory and continued at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Danse de Marseille. After training at The School of American Ballet in New York from 2010 to 2013, he joined the Professional Division program of the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. He then moved back to France to dance with the Jeune Ballet de Lyon. He danced with « De Dutch Don’t Dance » in the Netherlands in 2015, and then moved to Israel to join Kamea Dance Company in 2016. Eichinger joined LINES Ballet in 2019.

SHUAIB ELHASSAN from Manhattan’s Lower East Side, began his formal dance training at The Ailey School under the co-direction of Tracy Inman and Melanie Person on a full scholarship. Elhassan has also trained at intensives such as Earl Mosley’s Institute of the Arts, Jacob’s Pillow, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Elhassan was a member of Complexions Contemporary Ballet during their 2012- 2013 season. Additionally, Elhassan has performed with Life Dance Company, Zest Collective, Dance Iquail, and the Von Howard Project. Elhassan joined LINES Ballet in 2014.

JAMES GOWAN from Phoenix, AZ, began dancing at the age of 16 at Tempe Dance Academy. Gowan graduated with a BFA in Dance from Point Park University, where he worked under teachers and choreographers Kyle Abraham, Doug Bentz, Randy Duncan, Christopher Huggins, Keisha Lalama, Emery LeCrone, Garfield Lemonious and Peter Merz. Gowan has danced as a company member with Texture Contemporary Ballet, River North Dance Chicago and DanceWorks Chicago.

He has performed works by George Balanchine, Robert Battle, Frank Chavez, Christopher Gattelli, Dwight Rhoden, and Ashley Roland. James joined LINES Ballet in 2016.

ILARIA GUERRA was born in Torino, Italy. At the age of five, she moved to Palos Verdes Estates, California where she trained in classical ballet at Lauridsen Ballet Center, performing with their pre-professional company, South Bay Ballet. Guerra graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA Program at Dominican University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance and a minor in Arts Management in 2013. She joined dawsondancesf under the direction of Gregory Dawson in 2013. With dawsondancesf she had the opportunity to perform in New York, Denver, Southern California, and all over the San Francisco Bay Area.

In 2016, Guerra received an Isadora Duncan Dance Award for Ensemble Performance. Guerra joined LINES Ballet in 2018.

MAYA HARR grew up in Alexandria, Virginia where she studied ballet at The Washington School of Ballet under the tutelage of former LINES Ballet company dancer, Kristina Windom and award-winning choreographer Mimmo Miccolis. As a student, Harr was the recipient of the Mary Day Scholarship and was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center Master Class Series. Harr spent her summers with San Francisco Ballet, PNB, Ballet West, ABT and the Kirov Academy. After graduating from high school, Harr moved to the Bay Area to attend the LINES Ballet Summer Program and began her training in the LINES Ballet Training Program. Harr joined LINES Ballet in 2016.

ASHLEY MAYEUX Born in Houston, Texas, she began her dance training at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts and graduated cum laude with a BFA from SUNY Purchase. Mayeux continued her studies at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and went on to perform in the tour of the Broadway musical Aida. She has been featured in publications including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Essence Magazine, and Pointe Magazine. Mayeux danced with Complexions Contemporary Ballet from 2012 to 2016, before becoming a company member of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre from 2016 to 2018. Mayeux joined LINES Ballet in 2018.

DANCER PROFILES ALVARO MONTELONGO from Guadalajara, Mexico, started his dance training at Academia de Danza Doris Topete, and then went on to train at Fomento Artístico Cordobés, The Sarasota Cuban Ballet School, The Ailey School, and most recently graduated cum laude from the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. During his time as a student he had the honor of performing works by William Forsythe, Dwight Rhoden, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Jodie Gates, d. Sabela Grimes, George Balanchine, Alejandro Cerrudo, Jiří Kylián, Moncell Durden, Cristal Pyte, Aszure Barton, and Alvin Ailey.

Aside from performing, Alvaro choreographs and performs dance evening works in his hometown.

MICHAEL MONTGOMERY of Long Beach, CA, trained at the Orange County High School of the Arts and studied at the Alvin Ailey School in the Certificate program. In 2011, Montgomery graduated from the Alonzo King LINES Ballet BFA Program at Dominican University of California.

Montgomery was awarded the American College Dance Festival Association’s best student performer award for the Southwest Region in 2008. In 2010, Montgomery was named a Shenson Performing Arts Fellow that same year. Montgomery was named to the list of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine in 2013. Montgomery joined LINES Ballet in 2010.

M E R E D I T H W E B S T E R (Ballet Master) Meredith Webster grew up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, studying dance under Jean Wolfmeyer, and received further training at the Harid Conservatory and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. She then worked with Sonia Dawkins and Donald Byrd in Seattle, and earned a BS in Environmental Science from the University of Washington before moving to San Francisco to work with Alonzo King LINES Ballet. In her nine seasons as a dancer with the company, Webster performed and originated many central roles, received a Princess Grace Award, and guested at gala events around the world. In August 2014, she moved into the role of Ballet Master.

In 2015, she performed INCOGNITO, a duet with Ledoh/Salt Farm as part of the SF International Arts Festival at Fort Mason, and worked with Maureen Whiting Company on Burden of Joy. In 2017, she performed in and co-created Empress Archer, an evening-length duet with Ariel Freedman, produced by The Cambrians of Chicago. Webster has served as a faculty member for the LINES Ballet BFA, Training, and Summer Programs, and as a guest teacher at Pacific Northwest Ballet School, George Mason University, Cornish College of the Arts, Spectrum Dance Theater, and Dancers’ Workshop in Jackson, WY. She has contributed as writer to Dance Spirit and Conversations.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS Through our robust education programs, Alonzo King LINES Ballet provides an environment for the unfolding of students’ own creative powers. The cornerstone that shapes our training philosophy is that art is within the artist.

Training Program — Our Training Program is a full-time two-year professional experience for avid dancers ages 18-24. Our exceptional faculty propels students beyond pre­ -conceived limitations and encourages the embodiment of excellence. Through technical aptitude and artistic fortitude, the ultimate goal is to develop strong, versatile, intelligent dance artists who are empowered to share their unique voices.

BFA at Dominican University of California — Alonzo King LINES Ballet and Dominican University of California join forces in this technically rigorous and artistically expansive four-year program, which culminates in a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. During the program, students acquire the skills and knowledge needed for a professional dance career along with the life-long benefits of an excellent liberal arts education.

Summer Program — Our Summer Program offers a unified approach to training rooted in the philosophy of Alonzo King. Intensive courses are designed for aspiring dancers ages I1 - 25. Our renowned faculty guide students on a collaborative journey that values artistic risk-taking and independent thinking. Students explore a variety of dance techniques, with ballet as its core discipline.

Discovery Project — The Discovery Project is an outreach program designed to diversify the scope of LINES Ballet’s impact on young artists and communities nationwide. LINES Ballet collaborates with host schools and fellow dance educators across the country to provide intermediate to pre-professional dancers ages I 1-25 with three to four-day intensive workshops conducted by LINES Ballet faculty members.

At LINES Ballet we believe that premier artistry goes hand-in-hand with community service. This begins at the doorstep of our official home and artistic hub in the Odd Fellows building of San Francisco’s mid-Market neighborhood and extends throughout the Bay Area with accessible and inclusive programs and partnerships for youth and families. LINES Ballet inspires the exploration of joy, humanity and self.

Our Dance Center operates directly out of our official San Francisco home, offering nearly 80 open classes for adults per week, Teens at LINES for dancers ages 11- 18, as well as workshops and master classes that provide access to elite choreographers, companies, and artists. From the absolute beginner to the professional dancer, LINES Dance Center offers everything from ballet to modern, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, and global dance in an environment that is inspiring and approachable. Connecting Alonzo’s philosophy and vision, there is something here for everyone - encouraging artistry, dance education, and discovery through various dance forms.

Community Programs integrate Alonzo’s philosophy and approach into the lives of students, educators, youth and families. Our HeART with LINES residency program provides Bay Area students with free in- and after-school dance education by professional teaching artists, encouraging participants to develop their own ideas, problem solve, discover and build community through the choreographic process. Other key programs include Kids at LINES Summer Camps for kids 3-10 years old, Family Workshops, Dance for PD ® , Professional Learning for Educators, Group Visits, and Field Trips.

WELCOME TO YERBA BUENA CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Our organization was founded in 1993 as a citizen institution that would be home to the diverse local arts community while serving to connect the Bay Area to the world.

YBCA’s mission is to generate culture that moves people. We believe that culture—a collection of art, traditions, values, human experiences, and stories— is what enables us to act with imagination and creativity, to act socially, politically, and with conviction. Culture instigates change in the world.

We believe that more and different kinds of people need to be defining culture today and that more people need to have access to cultural experiences that are relevant to their lives and their communities. We need new definitions and new experiences that bring people together regardless of their differences in order to make the inclusive and equitable culture we need today.

We believe that the arts should be on the front line of change and that cultural institutions exist to spur and support big societal movements. Through powerful art experiences, thoughtful and provocative content, and deep opportunities for participation, we are committed to kindling inclusive culture that cultivates empathy, awakens personal and societal transformation, and reaches for a world fueled by inspiration. The need has never been stronger than now, and there is no better place than YBCA to answer the call. We are so glad that you are here.
