A Farewell from Gordo Dear Aloha 2022, You may know that when I was a tent counselor, I spent my days in the Woodchuck Hole teaching campers about knots, fires, jackknives, axes…the whole shebang. Of course, I also loved going on trips, and I was a staunch proponent of the well-known camping adage: always leave a campsite better than you found it. That same sentiment is at the heart of so much of what we do at Aloha. We talk often about contributing in ways big and small: scrape the plate, sign up for the trip, plunge the toilet…in essence, “be a somebody,” as our dear Shel would say. As I look back on my thirty summers at camp, and the thousands of campers and counselors who consider Aloha to be home, I think of us as a community of somebodies. I am proud of the camp we’ve built together, and of our shared recognition that creating an intentional community is an ongoing undertaking.

I’ve had some summers at Aloha where my successes have been immediately apparent: a rank passed, a friendship solidified…things that were tangible or easily measured. continued on page 2
