MidTown Cleveland is the district of Cleveland situated betwen downtown and University Circle. This area, once a thriving neighborhood outside of Downtown, is trying to return to it’s roots. The goal of the project was to select a building in MidTown for adaptive reuse. The Warner and Swasey Comapny dates back to the late 1800s with their worldwide reputation for telescopes and precision instruments.

The sport of aerial silk began as a way to show the human experience through aerial movement, and today has reached new heights with performers finding more innovative, dangerous, and astonshing ways to make audiences amazed. Adroit is 1. expert or nimble in the huse of hands or body 2. cleverly skillfull, resourceful, or ingenious. The space is intended to give a unique atmosphere for a unique means of fitness and exercise while also providing a family-like environment for all users. The inspiration for the space was derived from this painting by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy as well as the Bauhaus, and the personal feelings and actions received from that art and design. The building will provide space for not only athletes and employees of aerial skills, but also a cafe open to the public as well as designated studios for alternate fitness classes, and space for artists and craftsmen to create artwork, and pieces utilized in the aerial arts studio. The upper level will include a hostel to accommodate a variety of tennants including students, potential campers, artists, and visitors. The space aims to be a positive addition to the MidTown district by being tailored to all demographics and housing a variety of users to provide a “place to be” in the MidTown neighborhood. The design intends to bring a unique quality to MidTown and Cleveland with hopes of drawing more people to the area and giving them a reason to stay.

the increase in natural disasters, responding with recover and relief efforts is important.

The

goal was to develop a mobile and quick to deploy relief village that provides a safe and comfortable environment for those displaced by a disaster. disaster relief.

The deployment phase involved how the kit is delivered, deployed, and prepared for, who can utilize the kit, and how the kits can be flexible for multiple numbers of users. MUSEUM OF CULINARY ART

Palazzo Spini Feroni is a historic building located in Florence, Italy. Today it stands as a Ferragamo store. The goal was to turn the existing ground floor into a modern art museum of any media. MOCA (Museum of Culinary Art) focuses on all artwork with the subject of food, and any art that uses food as a medium. Research and discovery of circulation throughout early stages of space planning enabled me to add a mezzanine level to better suit circulation of visitors. The space features workshop spaces, a cafe, and various hands-on spaces allowing visitors to make their own art and learn about food and the art of food. Florence, being a center for culinary masterpieces, was the inspiration for the museum’s subject being of food. This lighthearted, modern space provides an experience to juxtapose the historic setting of Florence, while still maintaining the building’s existing character.

THE SOCIAL STATION

The West End Marketplace is a historic building originally used as a candy and cracker factory in Dallas, Texas. The goal was to transform the seventh floor of this historic building into a first of its kind coworking and pop-up retail space. The Social Station is a coworking space during typical office hours, then is transformable to event and pop-up retail space for after hours use. The Social Station was inspired by the food truck population in Dallas. Tenants of The Social Station are welcomed with an eclectic environment with collaborative, private, work focused, relaxing, and lively zones integrated in one space. The custom recessed lighting was inspired by a route of a food truck in Dallas. The locations of stops on the route created a geometric pattern resembled through LED lights on the ceiling. Materials and finishes, as well as the layout of space, provides a workspace that is as unique as the array of food trucks in the surrounding neighborhood.

Originally built in 1928, the L.N. Gross building was a clothing manufacturing facility and closed due to The Depression. The building has struggled to retain tenants until it was bought in 2016 for a use that is yet to be determined. The project goal was to transform the historic space into a revitalized retail store for a useful addition to the city of Kent, Ohio. The design for ‘Meant to Bee’, a boutique bridal shop, was based on the concept of honeybees. The design was inspired by the organic forms related to a bee.

Forms such as drizzled honey, the bee’s wings, and the shape of bee’s bodies derived the design. As brides enter ‘Meant to Bee’, raised platforms displaying wedding gowns draw them into the store. As they move into the space, the arched displays housing gowns represent the compartments of beehives. Continuing to the wall opposite the entry, brides find a specialty section containing coutour gowns. The center of the space features a large raised platform with mirrors on all sides which parallels the center of a beehive.

Surrounding this raised platform are four dressing rooms that have access to this central area. The lower level houses the specialty section for the bridal party, offices, and alterations with its own dressing area. In ‘Meant to Bee’, brides are treated as the Queen Bee from the moment they enter the unique space.

The Kroger Grocery community aims to project an image promoting a balanced lifestyle and healthy life to their customers. The research on Kroger and its clinic, Total Health, lends itself to a design concept of ‘balance’.

Inspiration for Kroger Total Health was derived from the yin and yang symbol. Kroger strives to “Make quality healthcare affordable for busy individuals who juggle demands of work and family everyday.” Just like different aspects in life, yin and yang interact constantly, achieving a delicate life balance. As customers transition from the grocery store to The Total Health Center, they are introduced to materials, signage, furniture, and an overall environment that is unique to Kroger Total Health. As guests move throughout the space, they are surrounded by comfortable spaces inviting them to focus on living a balanced lifestyle.

Imprint is defined as a mark made by pressing something onto a substance so the outline is reproduced. One of the types of imprint is how people leave their mark on the world and how other people impact their life.

Hand prints are one of the most common types of imprint. Hands dramatically change throughout people’s lives. Newborn baby hands are pure, clean, simple, and inexperienced. During life, people experience tension, love, friendship, and heartbreak which start to create change in the hands. Inside ‘Endure’, named for enduring each life experience and obstacle that arises, guests are taken on a journey through life. Hands become more textured, rough, cracked, and full of lines that tell a story of personal life experiences.

Soft and pure materials are included in the first floor space representing young hands. As guests move through the dining room and upper level, they continue to move through the neutral toned space with hints of teal and orange which accent the wood tones. The space layout of the restaurant utilizes many curved lines representing the lines on the palms of hands. As guests travel upstairs, older hands are the inspiration for darker colors, rougher surfaces, and aged materials. A bar serving aged liquor and wine is implemented on this level along with a heavy use of wood to represent a lifetime of aging. Each ring in the wood, and crack in the leather symbolize a line that forms on hands with every experience they go through. The upper level features a balcony where guests can look down and reflect back on their life.
