Hospital board to undergo shake up Tara Gesner

tgesner@perfprint.ca

The Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital (CPDMH) board of directors is about to undergo a shake up. During the board’s Oct. 28 meeting, a packed room of elected officials from Carleton Place and Beckwith, as well as concerned citizens heard the hospital wants to advance best practice in board size and composition. “The board members that were here and present are all in favour of moving forward with best practices and adopting them for our governance structure,” board chair

Marcel Pinon said, following an in-camera session. Some audience members claimed this session broke procedure after a motion from Carleton Place’s board representative, Coun. The positions under examination include the municipal ex-officio positions, which represent Carleton Place, Beckwith and Mississippi Mills. “However, we need to determine how we are going to do that,” Pinon continued. “We want to gather more information, we need to engage the council and community.” The in-camera portion was also conducted in two sessions. After a number of minutes, all ex-officio members (voting and non voting)

were excused. “We are deemed to be in conflict of interest,” Redmond told the Canadian Gazette, “and we were asked to leave the room.” Presentations Last week’s meeting included a 30-minute presentation by Toronto lawyer Michael Watts of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt, regarding best practices in board structure. “This hospital, like many other hospitals, goes through accreditation, which identifies the board should regularly review its size and See BOARD page A/CP7
