For Beckwith’s Eden family, September started with hardship, but it is ending with a reminder of the tremendous good in their community. Hometown Hearts, a Carleton Place group, hosted a barbecue fundraiser for Diana Eden and her three children: William, Alexander and Laura Eden, on Sept. 20, held outside The Beckwith Butcher in Carleton Place. An outstanding $3,500 was raised for the family, along with $500 in gift cards. “It was a fantastic day,” Hometown Hearts president Lisa Occomore told the Canadian Gazette. “Once again, it showed us how many amazing people we have in this community and the communities surrounding us.” Furthermore, a message on the group’s Facebook page stated: “Today, we showed strength to people going through a hard time. We showed community. We showed caring, and we showed without a sense of caring there would be no sense of community. To our volunteers, musicians, schools and the people in this town and beyond who stepped up together today to make a difference for strangers ... this absolutely holds my heart and makes me proud to call all of this

our home. What an amazing and wonderful community we have.” The mission of Hometown Hearts: To support our community, the people in the community and to bring a whole new vibe to Carleton Place and surrounding area. In addition to the donation from Hometown Hearts, Kory Earle of Carleton Place’s Christmas Day committee presented the family with $250. Moreover, students from Notre Dame Catholic High School in Carleton Place, which is where Laura attends classes, arrived on scene with a $4,100 cheque, which was raised by way of various fundraisers since the fire. “Thank you so much for everything,” an emotional Diana said at the barbecue. She referred to the outpouring of support as “incredible.” The family has received donations of clothing, shoes, gift and gas cards, toiletries and so much more. “I cannot believe it,” Diana said. “Thank you!” Devastating fire The Eden family lost everything after fire destroyed their home at 344 Balmoral Dr. in Beckwith around 10:45 p.m. on Sept. 11.
