Reverend’s behaviour questioned Tara Gesner

Carleton Place’s deputy mayor has gone on record to voice his frustrations over the behaviour of a local clergy member. Jerry Flynn says he’s “disgusted” with Rev. David Andrew’s

conduct relating to the proposed redevelopment of Elliot Hall to an artisan chocolate shop and café. During a meeting with the Canadian Gazette recently, Flynn alleges Andrew, the rector at St. James Anglican Church for the last eight years, interrupted a ser-

mon the first weekend in August and “railed against the (town) council and named the people who opposed him in the neighbourhood.” “It doesn’t get any worse than that, as far as I’m concerned,” he See CONDUCT page A/CP2

Dozens of dogs and their owners participated in the annual Walk Your Paws for LAWS (Lanark Animal Welfare Society) Walkathon on Saturday, Sept. 19. The fundraiser took place in the park by the Carleton Place Neelin Street Centre (arena) and included a silent auction, a barbecue and representation from various local rescues. It is another blow for downtown Carleton Place as Reads Book Shop and Coffee Bar is closing its doors. “It is true,” owner Aisha Toor confirmed to the Canadian Gazette on Tuesday, Sept. 22. After much and careful consideration, Toor and husband Anthony Van Alphen decided to cease operations in a few weeks. “It is a difficult time for us,” Toor said. “We have loved our store beyond measure.” No business closes for just one reason, and this certainly rings true for Reads Book Shop and Coffee Bar. Over time, “we have felt as though we are fighting a battle that we will ultimately lose,” Toor said. The closing was announced on the business’ website and Fa-

cebook page, with many people expressing shock and sadness. “We have been so fortunate to have had such a wonderful experience,” Toor said, “and we have been blessed to work with our children and many other smart, energetic and engaging young people in Carleton Place.” The local Business Improvement Association (BIA) is heartbroken to hear of the closing of Reads Book Shop and Coffee Bar. “The contribution this business has given to the downtown is immeasurable,” project manager Cathie McOrmond noted in an email to this newspaper. “Aisha and Anthony have contributed to the community by offering an honest sound business, providing opportunities for book and knitting clubs, and offering a location for people to meet and greet,” she continued. For the past five years, Toor

has been a member of the BIA board, currently the co-chair. She received the Excellence in Customer Service award during the 2014 Carleton Place & District Chamber of Commerce’s Business Awards of Excellence Gala. Toor and Van Alphen have supported many local events, including Lanark County Interval House’s Take Back the Night and the BIA’s Free Comic Book Day. McOrmond said the BIA is saddened that Reads Book Shop and Coffee Bar “will no longer be a fixture in our downtown.” Reads Book Shop and Coffee Bar is located at 135 Bridge St. “It is like finishing a book you have loved and wish would never end,” Toor said. “It has been our pleasure to serve you.” “We have made so many new friends,” she added, “and we hope that in our own small way we have made a contribution to our community.”
