Community divided over chocolate shop proposal Tara Gesner
tgesner@perfprint.ca
Chocolate can be tempting, but the Town of Carleton Place wants to be sure not to over-indulge. That was the sentiment of council members on July 21 who voted unanimously to defer a decision regarding the severance and zoning changes for St. James Anglican Church’s old parish hall, Elliot Hall (224 Edmund Street). Named after Rev. Canon Elliot, it was built in 1923 on land originally used as a lumberyard. Elliot served as the church’s rector from 1890
to 1925. St. James Anglican Church hopes to sell Elliot Hall to the McKeen family, owners of Manitoulin Chocolate Works; however, it’s a conditional sale, which hinges on a severance and zoning change. Community members are passionately divided over the matter, and as a result, a standing-room-only crowd packed the town hall auditorium for the town’s planning and protection committee meeting July 21. Keith and Heather McKeen were also at the meeting. Heather is Keith’s oldest daughter with wife Louise. The couple has another

daughter, Brenda. Ten years ago, Louise and Keith purchased a 105-yearold building in the heart of Manitoulin Island, in the village of Kagawong, which they have completely renovated. In 1998 they launched Manitoulin Chocolate Works. In addition to its handmade chocolates, the business offers confections, fresh roasted coffee and a variety of sweet and savoury gourmet items from around the country, the world. “My wife started it,” Keith said, “and Heather is the
brains behind the operation.” With Heather getting married next year, “it’s our family’s objective to have Heather start something here in Carleton Place because she wants to live here and raise a family,” he continued. Manitoulin Chocolate Works is seasonal, running from May 1 until Dec. 24. “We manage to make a living,” Keith said, “but we are hoping to start something in Carleton Place.” “We want to be a part of See SHOP page A/CP2
Pakenham General Store marks 175 years Aug. 1 Kelly Kent

A lot has changed since 1840. On Saturday, Aug. 1, the Pakenham General Store is inviting locals to see just how much times have changed since then as they celebrate their 175th anniversary. The store first opened in 1840, making it the longest running general store to remain in the same location in all of
Canada. “It’s quite an accomplishment, I would say,” said Sheila Lamb, the store’s general manager. “We’ve been serving the community for a long, long time.” To mark their 175th birthday, the Pakenham General Store is hosting a celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 1 complete with a barbecue and birthday cake, See STORE page A/CP7

Herbfest was held at The Herb Garden on Old Almonte Road for the final time July 26 with the Carp Farmers’ Market taking it over next year. Despite the heat warnings, many came out to experience the event, which included vendors, cooking demonstrations and more.
