The Octagon Room at the Almonte General Hospital was a fancy place on Saturday, June 13, as the Almonte Lions Club hosted their Victorian Tea and Fashion Show event. Ladies and gentlemen dressed in their finest for the event, which featured a lunch of sandwiches, tea and a fashion show. Above, ladies enjoyed tea from vintage china teacups during the event. The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games torch relay is a 41-day journey, with 3,000 torchbearers passing through more than 130 communities. On Thursday, July 2 torchbearers will carry the torch from Orleans to Kingston, making a stop in Carleton Place for a special celebration hosted by the town. Residents are invited to attend the festivities, which will take place at Town Hall Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event, Carleton Place’s community programmer Jessica

Smith said, will feature live entertainment, cake, refreshments, greetings from Deputy Mayor Jerry Flynn, a caricaturist, the singing of O Canada and photos with the torch. “Andrew McDougall will be performing,” she added, “and Mike Gauthier of Freedom Photography will have his portable photo booth set up so that people can have their picture taken with the torch.” The town’s recreation and culture department was able to secure a $5,000 grant from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport to put towards the Pan Am torch

relay celebration. “Photos with the torch are free,” Smith said, “and copies will be printed off for everyone to take home.” Carleton Place purchased an official Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games torch. “The town is also supplying everyone in attendance at Town Hall Square with a free hot dog lunch, balloons and noisemakers,” Smith said. Carleton Place’s official community torchbearer is local Sydney Catlin, 20, a ringette goaltender. She has represented both See TORCH page A/CP 2
