Sonnenburg family putting the squeeze on cancer this Saturday Tara Gesner

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. The family of the late Ed Sonnenburg, Carleton Place’s former deputy mayor, is doing exactly this on Saturday, June 6, participating in a fundraiser to help families who are impacted by cancer. “It’s been almost 10 months since Ed passed,” Evelyn Sonnenburg told the Canadian Gazette in an interview last Wednesday, May 27. Ed, who served close to two terms as deputy mayor, from

The grandchildren of the late Ed Sonnenburg, Carleton Place’s former deputy mayor, are participating this Saturday, June 6, in the Cardel Homes Great Canadian Lemonade Standemonium. “Team Grandpa Ed” will be serving up lemonade and cookies for donations during Zion-Memorial United Church’s annual yard and plant sale, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pictured are Eddie and Evan Hebert, Michael Showers and Aislinn Webster.

2006-2010 and 2010-2014, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last August. He was 66. When asked how she’s doing, Evelyn replied, “I am doing well, I am keeping busy.” Saturday’s fundraiser, called the Cardel Homes Great Canadian Lemonade Standemonium and presented by Palladium Insurance, is part of a campaign for the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. Now in its third year, it’s a fun-filled, one-day appeal where kids host stands in their neighbourhood. “I went to one last year in town,” Evelyn said, “It was during the time Ed was sick.”

She explained the concept is simple: Children dress in yellow T-shirts with the fundraiser logos on the front, serve lemonade and cookies for a donation. “This year we (the family) knew we wanted to set up a stand,” Evelyn said. Cancer affects everyone – the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children. Because it’s all about location, the “Team Grandpa Ed” lemonade stand will be open for business from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., set up at Zion-Memorial United Church. See LEMONADE page A/CP2

The road to the potential Heritage Conservation District (HCD) in Almonte’s downtown core continues to wind as the study begins to wrap up. On Thursday, May 21, the Town of Mississippi Mills hosted an open house on the subject of the HCD study that is currently underway. The purpose of the open house was to answer questions that residents

might have about the study, and to inform them of what having an HCD in downtown Almonte would mean for everyone. “What we want people to know is that this isn’t about saying no to new construction or even to renovations,” said Diane Smithson, the town’s chief administrative officer, at the open house. “It’s about ensuring there’s consistency with what’s there today.” Members of the public were invited to the open house event,

held at the Almonte Old Town Hall, where they could browse through information panels or ask questions of town staff. The 11 information panels stationed around the room provided clarification on everything from the purpose and objectives of an HCD to the process of applying for a heritage permit. The panels also addressed some of the frequently asked questions the town has received See DISTRICT page A/CP2
