Carleton Place woman finds bandage in iced tea Ashley Kulp
akulp@perfprint.ca
The television commercials show taking the Nestea plunge as refreshing, however it was anything but for a Carleton Place resident recently when a gulp of her iced tea revealed an adhesive bandage. Karen Meldrum was waiting to pick her husband up from oral surgery May 8 when she stopped at Farm Boy in Kanata to grab a few groceries and a drink: a can of Nestea Zero, natural lemonflavoured iced tea. “I didn’t open it right away because I didn’t want to take
a drink into the doctor’s office when I picked up my husband,” Meldrum said in an interview with the Canadian Gazette May 13. Once her husband was in the car and they were safely on their way home, she popped open the can. She was about halfway through the drink when she says she noticed something wasn’t right. “My first thought was, ‘Please tell me it’s not a mouse.’ I handed it to my husband and he looked to see what it was. He thought it might be a lemon peel and that wouldn’t have been so bad,” Meldrum commented. At a stop light, she poured
the rest of the iced tea out and finally got a closer look at the item in the can. “It was definitely a bandaid (adhesive bandage) or a piece of gauze with surgical tape,” she stated. She immediately felt ill and tried not to think about what she had just consumed, but was grateful her husband hadn’t taken a sip. “He had an open wound, what would have happened? Or what if my son had a drink of it?” Meldrum wondered. Upon arrival back home, Meldrum says she immediately contacted the Cana-
dian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to report the incident. She also called the number on the can of Nestea, which is a product of the Coca-Cola Company. “I had a few options. I could submit (the can) to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and they would do their own testing with Coke, or submit it directly to Coke,” she explained. In speaking to a representative at the Coca-Cola company, they assured her it “couldn’t have happened.” See BANDAGE page A/CP2

Carleton Place resident Karen Meldrum says she received a nasty surprise May 8 when a sip from a justopened can of Nestea Zero revealed an adhesive bandage.
The Carleton Place Canadians may not have ended the season the way they wanted, but becoming back-toback Bogart Cup and Fred Page Cups champions is nothing to scoff at. After fighting back and besting the Penticton Vees with a grueling double overtime win in semi-final action at the RBC Cup on Saturday evening, the
