Two losses for Canadians in RBC Cup play Staff

It’s not the start they had hoped for, but the Carleton Place Canadians are still in it. Two losses in two straight games for the team is making their third crack at the RBC Cup national championship a little more difficult after being handed a tough 4-3 overtime loss at the hands of the host Lloydminster Bobcats Monday, May 16. Taking to the Centennial Civic Centre ice Monday evening, the Canadians started the game off on the right foot, 30 seconds into

the opening frame. Brett Murray (from Bryce Van Horn) netted a goal to give Carleton Place an early lead. Six minutes later at 6:39, the Bobcats’ Noah Bauld tied things up, capitalizing on a hooking minor to the Canadians’ Alex Robinson. Fighting back at 8:05, Van Horn had his own power play marker for the Canadians, from Nicolas Carrier and Robinson. It was followed seconds later, at 8:19 by Maxime St. Pierre’s goal, assisted by Will LeNeave and Logan Buchanan. That 3-1 cushion was short lived, however, as

Lloydminster’s Greg Moro closed out the first period at 17:13 with a goal, to bring his team within one. Despite the flurry of activity in the first, there was no scoring in the second period, setting up an interesting final 20 minutes. Stellar goaltending by Canadians’ phenom Colton Point helped the team retain their one-goal advantage, but at 13:23, the Bobcats’ Kevin Darrar netted the tying marker, thanks to a power play opportunity. Carleton Place’s Geoff Kitt earned a hooking minor at 11:43 of the period to put the team down a player. The Canadians were able to hold on for the rest of the period, forcing overtime, but not before Maxime St.

Pierre went to the penalty box for a holding minor at the 19:10 mark. The remainder of St. Pierre’s penalty would wind down in overtime, giving Darrar a chance for his second power play goal of the night just 54 seconds into the overtime period, sealing the 4-3 win for the host Bobcats. The Bobcats peppered Point with 45 shots on goal in the game, compared to the Canadians’ 29 on Lloydminster netminder Alex Leclerc. The Jock River Paddle was held as part of Beckwith Township’s celebration of its 200th anniversary this year. Paddlers took to the waters of the Jock on the morning of Saturday, May 14, for 16 and 6.5 km routes, with the final docking taking place at an impromptu harbour set up at the end of Old Mill Road.
