The streets of Franktown bustled with activity May 9 for the annual Where’s Franktown series of races. From left: Caleb Bourne, Josh Libby, Nekoda Sabourin, Simon Bourne and Tim Bourne.

The protest against nursing cuts at Almonte General Hospital (AGH) isn’t dying down. In fact, it’s gaining steam. A public information session, hosted jointly by local chapter 3022 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU), to rally supporters was held May 7 at the Almonte Legion. While its primary purpose was to raise awareness within the local community about the elimination of 10 Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) positions, to be replaced by Personal Support Workers (PSW) at AGH, it also served as an opportunity to announce a rally planned for June 12 in Ottawa. This first planned day of action will take place at

noon at Ottawa-West Nepean MPP and Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli’s office (201-2249 Carling Avenue). “We hope to have people out in numbers for that rally and others are taking place in Hamilton, Haliburton and London,” noted OCHU vice-president Michael Hurley. “We’re not going to let this go.” According to Linda Melbrew, president of local chapter 3022 of CUPE, two successful rallies have already been held against the local hospital cuts: a protest in front of AGH on March 16 and another at the office of Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Jack MacLaren on March 27. “We’re rallying to reverse the decision,” she noted. “…We need you to help us try to fight these cuts to our hospital. These cuts don’t heal and with them, we

don’t know what’s going to happen to our hospital.” During the session, Hurley shed some light on the instability of the health care sector and said the AGH cuts are indicative of what is happening to rural hospitals throughout the area, including Perth and Smiths Falls, who are facing budget constraints due to limited funding from the province. He noted that a recent health care symposium held by the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital May 1 in Perth, unveiled some shocking information from the South East Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). “(The LHIN) is stating that people in their last years of life use the most health care and that it isn’t fair because seniors don’t pay taxes. Open house to discuss CP skate park May 25 Tara Gesner

A new skate park is proposed for Carleton Place and the municipality is looking for the public’s input. Residents are invited to an open house on Monday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the Bob Rintoul Hall at the Neelin Street Community Centre (arena). Joanne Henderson, manager of recreKelly Kent/ ation and culture, said the town wants to METROLAND hear input from the local skating com-

munity as to what features they’re hoping to see in the improved skate park’s design. The existing skate park, located behind the Carleton Place Curling Club, has been around since 1999, when the arena’s second ice surface was constructed. “We want to bring the skateboarding community together – kids and their parents, in an effort to figure out what types of ramps they would like to see, to find out who’s interested in helping us

with fundraising,” Henderson said. There is $50,000 in the town’s 2015 budget for a skate park. However, of this amount, $17,500 is expected to come from others – by way of sponsorship, donations and fundraising. “We need to get the ball rolling so we can come up with these extra funds,” Henderson said. Recently, she spoke to a skateboard company to find out what they could See SKATE page A/CP9
