SPRING AHEAD
By TARA GESNER
Daylight Saving Time returns as of 2 a.m. this Sunday, March 9. Make sure to turn your clocks ahead one hour when you go to bed Saturday night. This is also a good time to check the batteries for all the smoke detectors in your home.

Flavourful flapjacks Community – The biting cold could not keep people away from this year’s March Meltdown, held in Beckwith Township on Saturday, March 1. Once again, the Beckwith Youth Committee hosted the event, which featured a day packed full of free, fun activities for everyone. News – The Carleton Place Daycare’s gala had heart. The Tiny Hearts Gala on Saturday, March 1, turned out to be a successful event that was attended by 120 people. The affair, held in the upstairs hall of the Neelin Street Community Centre, celebrated 30 years of quality childcare. Guests enjoyed a five-course meal, music by popular disc jockey Jack Denovan, live entertainment by daycare alumni and much more. The highlight of the night was a tribute to Linda Magill, a recipient of the 2013 Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. “Linda was the only recipient from this region,” emcee Marc Barnes said. Barnes is a member of the municipality’s Childcare Advisory Committee (CAC). The Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education honour outstanding educators who, through their devotion and skill, are giving children an important head start and help them succeed at school. “Linda is very humble,” mayor Wendy LeBlanc said. “She doesn’t just give herself credit
(for the award), she gives credit to the daycare’s entire staff.” “This is a value she passes along to the children she works with,” the mayor continued. Prime Minister Stephen Harper was invited by the town to attend the Tiny Hearts Gala. “He didn’t respond,” LeBlanc said, “however, I hope he surprises Linda by showing up on her doorstep.” CAC chair Bob Jenkins hoped Magill’s recognition would inspire other early childhood educators to put their names forward for recognition. “Maybe we can have a whole wall of these certificates one day,” he said. Magill was recently named one of 20 Community Heroes of the Game, an initiative of Algonquin College and the Ottawa Senators. Moreover, she received the Carleton Place Community Builder Award earlier this year. Thank you Amanda Waterfield’s son was in Magill’s class for two years. “Everyday I knew Evan would come home with something interesting to tell us,” she said. Many times Waterfield was called Linda instead of mommy, See GALA page A/CP2
