Twycross Zoo Burton Road, Atherstone, Warwickshire CV9 3PX www.twycrosszoo.org Twycross Zoo was founded in 1963 by pet shop owners Molly Badham and Natalie Evans after the pair’s increasing zoological collection outgrew their three quarter acre site in Staffordshire.

The zoo is now renowned as a World Primate Centre and has a wide variety of monkeys and apes including the UK’s only group of bonobos.

They have breeding groups of many endangered primate species and often have babies and toddlers playing around in their great ape groups, and in many of their monkey groups.

The zoo also holds a range of other species including Asian elephants, snow leopards, penguins, meerkats, tapir, hyena, and the worlds largest big cat, the Amur leopard.

Set in more than 80 acres, there are over 500 animals of almost 150 species to see, including many end angered animals and native species in the nature reserve. You can walk with the ring-tailed lemurs in their walk-through enclosure; see the troop of emperor tamarins leap above your head in the treetop exhibit and watch the Humboldt penguins take their daily walk.

The keepers present regular talks and feeds where you can learn a bit more about some of the animals such as the chimpanzees, Asian elephants and South American coatis.

nest cupcakes Try our spectacular nest cupcakes for an Easter baking recipe that's hard to beat. With two layers of light chocolate sponge, a rich and creamy buttercream icing and a delicate homemade nest topping, these Easter cupcakes really are a work of art.

INGREDIENTS:  175g butter  175g caster sugar  175g self-raising flour  50g cocoa powder  3 eggs buttercream  75g Trex margarine  75g unsalted butter  tsp vanilla paste or essence  200g icing sugar, sifted  25g cocoa powder  chocolate drizzle icing

 75g plain chocolate,

broken into pieces  25g unsalted butter  3 tbsp double cream

nests  100g plain chocolate,

broken into pieces  2 large Shredded

Wheat, broken into shreds (taking care to try to keep some longer strands) Chocolate mini eggs to decorate

 To make the buttercream, blend the butter and Trex in a bowl

METHOD:  Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Cream the butter and caster sugar together until almost a whipped and creamy mixture is formed. Add the flour, cocoa and eggs and fold together then whisk again until creamy.  Lightly grease a 12-hole muffin tin and divide the mixture between them. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 20 minutes until well risen and firm on top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tin before using a small palette knife to ease each of the cakes out of the tin and onto a cooling rack to cool completely.

Pipe a rosette of icing on the top of the cake, starting close to the edges and ending in a peak on the top.  Now make the chocolate drizzle icing. Place the chocolate, butter and cream into a small heatproof bowl placed over a pan of gently simmering water and stir until melted, smooth and glossy.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Place into a small piping bag and snip the end to form a thin point.

Drizzle over the buttercream. Set aside while making the nests.  To make the nests, melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Remove from the heat and add the broken Shredded Wheat and very gently stir into the chocolate to allow it to coat the wheat strands. Using small tea cups, place a tablespoonful of the mixture into each of the cups and shape into a nest shape, with a hollow centre, to resemble a nest. Chill for 10 minutes, or freeze for 2-3 minutes until set firm, then remove from the cups using a small palette knife. Place on top of each of the cakes, squishing down the icing mini eggs and serve.

Thread through the 11 stitches and pull to gather tightly. Fasten off securely and sew the seam from top to bottom.

METHOD: Using 4mm needles This seam is the middle of the back of the chick. cast on 30 stitches Rows 1-4: knit (called garter Place cosy onto your egg cup (with an egg in the egg stitch) Row 5: purl cup) to make placing the eyes and beak easier and to make sure Row 6: knit (repeating rows 5 & 6 is called stocking stitch) that the seam is at the back of the cosy.

Carefully remove the tops from the eggs, leaving the bottom two-thirds of the shells intact. Empty the shells (save the eggs for another time), then carefully wash them out. Decorate the shells with pens or paint, then leave them to dry.  Dip the cotton wool balls in a little water, squeezing off any excess. Place 1 ball inside each shell, then sprinkle 1 tsp cress seeds onto each one. Sit the filled shells in eggcups and leave in a dry, well-lit place for a week – a windowsill is perfect. Your cress will start to grow within a few days, perfect for making egg & cress sandwiches! 

In the UK over 1 MILLION children and young people have some form of speech, language and communication difficulty.

Children are surrounded by language and so speech and language difficulties impact most aspects of their everyday lives – interactions with families, attempts to make and keep friends, learning about their world and their education.

The period from 8-24 months is one of the most important stages of language development because what takes place in a child’s early years can have a lasting influence on their health and well-being. You can support these early stages of language development by using the following top tips that we use at ME Speech Therapy in your own home.

talk and play everyday Tell your child what is happening. Talk about what they are doing in play, e.g. ‘Teddy’s sleeping’ ‘You’re feeding baby’.

Add gesture and visuals. Using gestures, such as pointing or signing, will help support your child understand new words and aid their attention and listening Leave the TV off. Watching too much TV can get in the way of good listening and attention. Children should ideally have no more than 30 minutes of screen time a day. Always turn off the TV when no one is watching it.

Keep it short. Use short phrases and language at the same level as your child to help them understand and copy your language.

Parents are the best toy! Children quickly learn to self-explore during play but you are their favourite toy. Play interactive games together (pat a cake, washing and feeding teddy), sing nursery rhymes and share stories.

Listen and Repeat. Show you understand and help them learn new words by repeating what they have said and then adding another word. e.g. Child: “Want juice” Adult: “You want orange juice”.

Always get down to their level. Communication happens naturally when we are close together and looking at each other.

Your child will enjoy your facial expressions and begin to learn how to use them Your child leads the play. Allow your child to choose the toys they want to play with, wait a few moments for them to start the play before you join in.

Social Media isn’t going away.

Don’t leave your children to work it out on their own.

I’m a big fan of social media. However I’m acutely aware of its downsides, particularly where children and young people are concerned.

First the good stuff. They have a world of knowledge at their finger tips, they can discover any information about any subject on earth. The only limitation is their imagination.

Safety This is the major worry for most parents, although not necessarily the biggest real danger.  Know the platforms and their age restrictions.

Set up parental controls directly from the router.

Also Youtube and Xbox. Under 13s should only use devices in family rooms  Encourage them to ask you rather than google it  Don’t befriend anyone you don’t know, and can’t identify  Don’t share personal information If something doesn’t feel right, then ask.

Self-esteem and anxiety There is no surprise that anxiety and mental health issues among young people are increasing.  Tell your children that life and people aren’t as perfect as they appear  Encourage them to take photographs of other interesting things than themselves  TURN IT OFF  Have actual friends and leave the house or have friends over as often as possible  Also, think about your own social media use. By all means share their triumphs, your love and your pride, but don’t post content that could embarrass them – even if they were only three at the time.

Bullying

When we were younger, bullying tended to be contained either in school, or the journey home.

Preventative healthcare is very important, and although we can’t protect our pets from all diseases and illnesses, there are several preventative treatments which can help minimise the risks.

Why vaccinate?

Vaccinations are needed every year in order to prevent your pet getting harmful and potentially life threatening diseases. These diseases cause intense suffering to pets and we strongly recommend vaccinating your pets.

When puppies and kittens are born they are usually protected from infections by their mother’s milk, providing she has been regularly vaccinated. However, this protection only lasts a few weeks so they need regular vaccinations from an early age.

In puppies the first vaccine can be given as young as six weeks of age, and the second is usually given two to four weeks later. In most situations kittens are vaccinated for the first time around 9 weeks of age with a second dose 3 weeks later.

Worming Regular worming will prevent your dog or cat from becoming ill with a worm infection which may result in illnesses such as skin irritations, diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss and respiratory problems. If left untreated, worm infections can be fatal. Some worms can be transmitted from animals to humans, so it is important to have an effective treatment

Rabbits can be vaccinated from five weeks old.

After the initial course of vaccination pets will need regular boosters in their life to maintain protection.

Why neuter?

As well as preventing unwanted litters, having your pet neutered has numerous health benefits and can assist in preventing certain illnesses such as cancer of the ovaries, womb and testicles. It can also reduce the risk of issues arising from aggression, roaming and hormonal problems.

Many people believe that neutering causes weight gain. It’s true that a neutered pet can be more prone to gaining weight, but providing your pet with the right diet and exercise will make sure he or she maintains a healthy weight.

Why do I need to treat fleas?

In addition to making your pet uncomfortable and itchy, fleas can transmit infectious agents such as tapeworms as well as harmful diseases affecting both humans and animals, e.g.

allergic reaction. Flea infestation can cause aneamia, especially in young and debilitated animals.

your eye shape Eye shadow isn’t just about colour – you can use it to enhance your eye shape too.

Blend in up to three colours; a graduation of shades is much prettier and really flattering.

Dark colours give this shape a smouldering intensity. As most of the eyelid is hidden try a light colour on the main part and darker shades on the middle of the lid and outer corner. Don’t forget that light shades bring things forward and dark tones make them recede.

There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding and easy to grow as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you’ll know what to do with!

May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then we can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month.

Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 1” of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow pretty rapidly.

When the seedlings have 4 to 6 leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day.

Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields

the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty and don’t be tempted to turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag.

Jobs for May  Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green.  If you’ve planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up.  With snow possible in April you’ll probably need to catch up with sowing crops that it was too cold for. As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or into grow bags.  Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and brussel sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later.
