mumpreneur... r u o t mee In this issue we meet Lucy Cave, wife of Phil and mum of three fantastic children; Jack age 18, Solomon age 15 and Tamara age 9. Their world was well and truly rocked when she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2014.

When I left school I was a nurse then later retrained to become a private Chiropodist, which I have been practising for the last 15 years. I started as a domicillary Chiropodist (LUCY CAVE FOOT-CARE WAS BORN) then built onto my house so I could offer clinic appointments from home and now offer both choices to present customers, some I see at home others drive , walk or get the bus, seeing people from far and wide. I love my job and have fantastic customers who have watched my business grow over the years , it is fantastic to have a great business which offers flexible opening hours to meet modern family requirements. I have a very supportive husband who is my soul mate and fantastic children Jack , Solomon and Tamara. My life was ticking along smoothly when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2014 this totally rocking the whole families world. I think it is the most difficult conversation I have had as a mother telling my children , but being open and telling them what I knew as results became known was key, that and a star chart designed by my gorgeous daughter

ticking off treatment days became essential.

So two operations, chemotherapy , radiotherapy and a beautiful wig later I finished my gruelling treatment, I am still having regular check-ups but so far so good.

Once the news hit, family, friends, and customers came into there own, cards, flowers, gifts , prayers and especially chocolate got me through the dark not fair, why me moments, it was a very difficult journey but I met some truly wonderful and brave individuals along the way. I am back working usual hours now, and the children are enjoying having mum with hair these days , but having thought when the diagnosis hit that was my business days would be finished , it is now going from strength to strength.

I am in remission now, and as I said having regular checks and support from a fabulous health service , I do not know what the future holds for my health so we don’t plan to far in advance.

I have started to write a children’s book which will help a child to deal with a mum loosing her hair.

Any body reading this if you have an idea to start a business go for it, take time to create special memories with your loved ones and give a bit back along the way.�

saving dogs from death’s row “Rescuing stray dogs who face euthanasia having served their statutory time in the council pound” Stray dogs taken to the local council pound have just seven days to be reunited with their families before they become the legal property of the local authority, and can be either rehomed or put to sleep.

Due partly to the recession, local authority pounds throughout the UK are full to bursting, leaving no space for the dog on its eighth day when the newest stray comes in.

More dogs than ever are being euthanised.

Many simply because there is nowhere for them to go and their owners have not come forward or been found (a good reason why you should microchip your pets and keep those details up to date). This is why rescues like Pawprints have been founded. We want to save as many of these dogs as possible and find them loving, forever homes. Since Pawprints started in 2011, we have saved hundreds of dogs that would otherwise have been put to sleep. We have paid thousands of pounds out for medical treatment for neglected, abandoned or lost dogs (all breeds). In order to meet these costs we have held auctions, jumble sales, dog shows, quiz nights etc. All of our dogs rescued from the pound undergo an assessment before being rehomed. All Pawprints dogs are fully vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and neutered (providing age allows).

Our dogs have come in from pounds and as such we often have no history for them. When the dogs come into our care, they undergo an assessment before being rehomed. This gives us an idea of the type of home that would be the best match for this dog and have the best chance of being permanent.

Our rehoming policies have been created with the best interest of the dog and the adopter in mind.

Prior to visiting any of our dogs, we request that you read our Adoption Policy on our website www.pawprintsdogrescue.org We will then invite you to meet some of the dogs.

Finally, a home check is carried out and any further questions you may have thought of can be asked.

We ask for an adoption fee of £120 when a dog is adopted by a new family. This rarely covers the cost of essential things such as kennelling, neutering, vaccinations, microchips, worm and flea treatment let alone any further costs incurred by individual dogs. These adoption fees are essential for us to be able to keep saving more dogs.

Taking on a dog is a big responsibility that can last for 10 – 15years, as such it is important that you fully consider your circumstances and think ahead.

All dogs need appropriate food, clean drinking water, comfortable shelter, veterinary treatment, exercise, training and affection to be provided by their owners.

Your support is greatly appreciated and without your donations we would not be able to continue our rescue work, you have helped save hundreds of dogs to date.

Ingredients:  375g potatoes peeled and grated  125g cheddar cheese grated  2 garlic cloves crushed

 2 teaspoons salt  2 teaspoons English mustard powder

 1 beaten egg  5 tablespoons milk

in your garden me to i t e h t now is cover! er go und It’s still pretty chilly during February but planting seedlings under glass (or plastic) can give you a great start for the season ahead. A bit of time and money invested now in a poly tunnel or greenhouse will give you benefits for years to come.

The days are getting a little longer, green shoots are starting to appear and we’re all just itching to get out in the garden now. Just one problem - it’s still likely to be rather cold!

Extremes in weather are typical for February so even if we do have a warmer spell I wouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to start sowing seeds outdoors. It’s at this time of year that having some undercover growing space is a real boon - not least because it’s so much more of a pleasure working in a protected environment, basking in the glory of those few rays of sun, than it is feeling a gale force wind that seems as if it has come straight from the arctic! If you don’t have a greenhouse, poly tunnel or cold frame then why not think about investing in one now? Get it built in February and you can get a head start on many plants for the season to come.

Which is best?

Consider the space available if space is limited then a cold frame, may be a good option. Green houses can offer lots of benefits but are generally not a great idea if your garden is also the kids play area and they can be hugely expensive. On the plus side, they are not easy to get rid of so if you’re prepared for a

bit of work you may be able to pick up a second-hand one very cheaply providing you are happy to dismantle and move it yourself (try free cycle). So, now that you have this great new space what can you plant in it? Early tomatoes can be started off in pots and if you plant some summer cabbages now you can get them established and benefit from a crop by late spring or early summer.

Cucumbers, beetroot, leeks and lettuces can also be sown indoors and if you want to try something a little more exotic why not plant some peppers, aubergines and even a melon?

If you don’t have any fruit growing on your plot how about adding just one type of fruit each year? You could plant raspberry canes this month or incorporate a gooseberry or blackcurrant bush into your border. If you have pot grown strawberries that have spent the winter indoors then place them outside as they will only flower after exposure to cold weather.

Plants that have over wintered outside can be brought in now.

Can’t wait for spring to really come? There are plenty of vegetables that can be started off indoors now…Tomatoes, Peppers, Aubergines, Lettuce,

Onions and Radishes etc.

photo frames Create these super-cute magnetic photo frames out of jar lids and self-hardening clay. Perfect presents for your mums and grandma on Mother’s Day. lid with clay.

Pat the clay with your fingers to smoothen it out and even out the thickness of the clay around the lid.  Add details with more clay or dough. If the clay around the lid has started to set and you have MATERIALS NEEDED:  Jar lids (plastic or metal) difficulty fusing the new clay parts with the base clay, you  Air dry clay or salt dough  Small/medium-sized magnets may moisten the joint areas a little bit.  Paper  Small decorative materials  Allow the clay to set completely (will take 1 to 2 (Optional) days). folded, draw two lines roughly in the middle of the fold. Cut along these two lines. This will form the finger slot to operate the butterfly.  Place a piece of modelling clay underneath the butterfly and then use a sharp pencil to make a hole. Thread a short pipe cleaner through the hole and twist it round to make the butterflies antennae.  Decorate your butterfly with paint, stickers or/ and gems.

‘The Mini Adventures of Freddie’ the first of its kind in the UK; is a simple and colourful storybook to be read by parents at home. Susan Dargie (Mini First Aid Leicester, Harborough, Kettering and Rugby) will be using ‘Freddie’ in local nurseries and pre-schools to bring first aid to life for young children.

Kate Ball, Founder of Mini First Aid wrote and published the book. She says: “Whilst developing a Mini First Aid class for 3-5 year olds, I was frustrated by the lack of fun material about first aid to engage children so I decided to write about Freddie. I got Hayley Vine on board as an illustrator and the Mini Adventures of Freddie’ was born! A child is often the only person present in an emergency situation especially at home; so it’s really important that we give young children the basic skills and confidence to potentially save a life.”

party invites Part of a host’s responsibility is dealing delicately with the feelings of those not on the guest list, and the earlier you can teach that skill, the better. Discuss ways to minimise hurt feelings, like avoiding party talk during school hours, and practice polite responses in case word does get out to uninvited peers.

There are some adult-specific things you can do too.

Track down postal addresses so your child doesn’t have to hand out invitations at school in view of uninvited peers. Call parents and let them know it’ll be a small group so that they can coach their child on the social etiquette of attending a private party, and check if any special ‘arrangements must be made for abilities or dietary ‘restrictions. Decide whether parents and siblings are included in the invitation, and let them know in advance.

If you do choose to include the whole class, be sure to consider the practical challenges. Some parties can get so crowded with children that the birthday boy or girl has no idea who’s there. Those parties are celebrations of excess, not of the child, and often end up more stressful than joyful. Parties should focus on bringing delight to children, not showing off who can throw the biggest party.

When defining the guest list the “age plus one” rule works really well - for a 5-year-old, for example, invite six guests - we think that’s excellent advice. It keeps the group manageable regardless of whether parents stay or drop off their children.
