The facts about Air conditioning Gas (R134a) How is the law changing? r134a - the Facts There has been a lot of talk and rumour about air conditioning gas (R134a) becoming illegal to sell in non-refillable containers after 4th July 2007. These rumours have arisen through this statement issued by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) :“Products and equipment containing or whose functioning relies upon fluorinated greenhouse gases manufactured before 4 July 2007 are not subject to the article prohibiting the placement of these goods on the market”.
what does this mean? Subsequent to 4th July 2007, all new r134a stocks must be manufactured and packaged in refillable containers….therefore if you have been offered “new stocks” of R134a gas in disposable containers it would be in your best interest to question the origin of the product! Safety Concerns over R134a imports “Garages may be unwittingly buying illegally imported cylinders filled with a cocktail of refrigerants. Disposable cylinders labelled R134a were intercepted by refrigerant producer Honeywell. After analysis, they were found to contain a mixture of R22, R152a and R141b. This mixture is flammable and contains ozone-depleting substances. It is estimated to be around 20 percent as efficient as R134a. The cylinders also failed to comply with safety regulations as they have no safety valve and do not carry the appropriate labels and warnings. These illegal cylinders are believed to originate predominantly from Asia and have been found on sale in Greece, Romania and Germany with some evidence to suggest sales in the UK also”. w guarantee the sale of our goods complies with regulation (Ec) no 842/2006 of the European we Parliament and of the council of 17 may 2006 on certain fluorinated greenhouse gases.
