‘Slugfest’ Predicted At Hawkeye Baseball Teams Heads For First State Title HAWKEYES/From A1 Maine-Endwell. “It was a well-played game by both teams,” said Miosek. “Thomas Edison started the game with the upper hand; they had a pitcher who really threw us off.” But the boys didn’t panic, and in the sixth inning senior Reilly Hall hit his career-first home run to bring two players into home. “It changed the whole momentum of the game,” said Miosek. “It put the other team on their heels, and we were able to manufacture three more runs to win the game.” Brandon Hage led off the seventh inning with a
win the game 5-3. “Hall is the best player in the state,” said Hazzard. “It’s really unique to have him hit his first home run like this, and the rest is history. All season, people were telling us they’d never seen kids from Cooperstown hit the way we hit.” Though Cooperstown finished the season 18-2, it wasn’t an easy spring. “The weather really worked against us,” said Miosek. “Some weeks we were playing five games in a Ian Austin/The Freeman’s Journal row, some weeks, only two games total.” Isaiah Senchyshyn prepares to smack a pitch during the Tuesday, June 6, practice as the team The challenge of baseprepared for the state championship Final Four. ball, said Hazzard, is that double, and Ben Tafuro hit home. They added two runs you can’t just play your best lineup. “You can’t just a single that brought him with bases-loaded walks to
pitch the same person every game,” he said. “Figuring out how you play each game is a big challenge, but that’s what makes it so special.” Hall, alongside seniors Taylor Price and Dante Wellman, are the team’s top pitchers. “We’ve got some young arms coming up too,” said Miosek. “But we’ve really depended on these three this season.” They’ll face the Potsdam Sandstoners at 3 p.m. Friday, June 9 at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton. “In my research, it looks like they can score a lot of runs,” said Hazzard. “But we’ve got a great offensive team, and our pitching is the best it’s ever been. New Lisbon Man ‘Stomped’ To Death, Prosecutor Alleges MURDER/From A1 said District Attorney John Muehl. “But we don’t know what started it. There are still a lot of questions to be asked, but the evidence points to the conclusion that Bellinger was stomped.” Said Sheriff Richard J. Devlin Jr., “It was an assault, but we’re still trying to piece together what happened in the hours leading up to his death.” Webb, 59, an Army veteran known around New Lisbon for working odd jobs and farm work, was arrested after a 911 call he placed 8:47 p.m. that evening. “The comments he made were enough for us to send law enforcement to the scene,” said Devlin. On arriving, deputies found Bellinger dead in the yard and Littlewood with “lacerations and contusions” consistent with an assault. No weapons were found, and according to Devlin, Perry was not injured. Though Perry was the primary resident of the property, Littlewood and Bellinger were living there at the time of the assault, Devlin said. Wheat Road is a dirt road, and there is no running water or electricity on the property, where there are three shacks and two camping trailers. The incident reportedly occurred in a front yard littered with scrap wood and beer cans. Although toxicology reports are still pending, alcohol is believed to be a factor in the assault. “Mr. Webb has lived there for years,” said Devlin. “Prior to living here, Mr. Littlewood lived in a tent down the road.” As the property is still an active crime scene, arrangements have been made for Littlewood him to stay elsewhere. He was treated
for his injuries at Bassett Hospital Friday evening and released. “More people are living in these kinds of conditions than we’d like to think,” said Bob Eklund, a New Lisbon Town Board member. “It’s really a tragedy.” Though Eklund said Webb mostly kept to himself, he was a recognizable figure around town, and Bellinger worked as a farm hand in the summer. “Both of them were long-term residents,” he said. “Artie always seemed like a happygo-lucky guy.” “Perry didn’t seem mean or anything like that,” said Tim Miller, New Lisbon town supervisor. “I had no negative interactions with him. I ran into him at Foolish Farms, said hi.” But in 2014, Webb was arrested, alongside Charles
Holmes, for petit larceny and criminal trespass, third degree, after they were accused of stealing a silo loader from a farm on Hoag Road in Morris, selling the scrap for $46 at a salvage yard in New Berlin. “We’ve dealt with Webb in the past,” said Devlin, but declined to elaborate further. Webb was arraigned Saturday morning in the Town of Hartwick court. He was being held in the Otsego Thinking of Remodeling? Think of Refinancing!
County jail without bail, pending his arraignment in Hartwick court Thursday, June 8; if charged with a felony, the case will be sent on to Otsego County court. Oneonta attorney Andy Puritz has been assigned to represent him. Bellinger’s autopsy was conducted by Dr. James Terzian, a forensic pathologist at Lordes Hospital in Binghamton. He ruled the cause as “blunt force trauma.

be a slugfest!” If they win, they’ll advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship game at Binghamton University. They’ll either play the Avon Braves, who are likewise competing in a Friday semifinal. “If we play our best, we can play with anybody,” said Hazzard. “We’re in a good position.” And this Hawkeye team hopes to finally bring home the school’s first state championship in baseball. “As a player, getting to the regionals was very cool,” said Hazzard. “To be coaching these kids when they reach the Final Four? It’s awesome.”
