hirty-four years ago, during her first summer as a nurseâs aide at Bassett Hospital, Heidi Bondâs mother, Registered Nurse Cindy Brophy, gave her advice that has carried her through her career to date. âShe told me, âI donât care if you have to go cry in the bathroom every shift â you finish this summer,ââ said Bond. âShe had a very strong work ethic, and she instilled that in me.â That fortitude was put to the test when the COVID19 pandemic hit. Bond, an LPN, has worked tirelessly, seven days a week, since the first case arrived in mid-March, assisting with contact tracing, scheduling testing clinics and monitoring the rise of the virus throughout the county. For her steady hand and firm compassion, Otsego County Director of Public Health Heidi Bond has been named the Citizen of the Year by Hometown Oneonta, The Freemanâs Journal and www.AllOTSEGO.com. âI know Iâm proud of the work sheâs done,â said Dave Bliss, R-

Midnight on New Yearâs Eve, 36 years of serving Otsego County will be over. âCindy and I will be at home, sipping champagne,â the countyâs most celebrated politician said Monday, Dec. 29, in a farewell interview. âIâve survived two very serious lifethreatening illnesses over the past year,â he said â a near-fatal bout of COVID-19 and a recurrence of cancer. âIâm truly blessed to have emerged from both of those as well as I have.â Jim Kevlin/The Freemanâs Journal Please See SEWARD, A2 Senator Seward and wife Cindy.
