Christ Church Starts Ringing Noontime Bell COOPERSTOWN
T
he noontime bell began ringing Monday, Nov. 12, in the Christ Episcopal Church steeple, as it will daily going forward, a replacement for the noontime fire siren the Village Board silenced in July. The new computerized system that directs a small hammer to strike 12 times, then 3x3 times – the traditional Episcopal summoning for The Angelus – was dedicated by the Rev. Mark Michael. Jane Forbes Clark, the benefactor, and Mayor Jeff Katz were also present. IT’S TIME: The Cooperstown Lions Club’s annual Christmas Tree Sale start 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, in the Chestnut Street parking lot. It will continue 5-6:30 weekdays, 9-5 Saturdays, and 11-5 Sundays until all trees are sold. Triathlete Groff Wows On Post-Olympic Visit Home By LIBBY CUDMORE COOPERSTOWN
T
riathlete Sarah Groff was worth skipping recess for. “Maybe we need to do some laps around the auditorium,” Otsego County’s Olympian joked to the gawking fifth-graders as
they waited for a theater class to finish using the stage. Three months after her fourthplace finish in the Olympic Triathlon – she was the first American across the finish line – Sarah returned to her hometown to talk about her experience with the swimmers at the Clark Sports Center, at Bassett and, finally, at her old high school.
“Not much has changed,” she said, looking around the hallways. Some of her old teachers were even on hand, including her gym teacher, now principal, Michael Cring. “One of my lowest grades was in his gym class,” she said. “I got in trouble for being lazy – hope I redeemed myself.” Her lowest grade was a 96, Please See SARAH, A3
