D.A. Warns Against ‘DIESEL’ After 2 Heroin Deaths By JIM KEVLIN & LIBBY CUDMORE

S

ome little glassine bags of heroin sold in Otsego County in the past have had a little “Batman” symbol in one corner.

Another batch had a skull & crossbones. The images work like a logo or a brand. In the past several days, the tiny word “DIESEL” has marked the tiny bags bearing heroin, laced with

fentanyl, an opiate 30 times stronger than heroin, and it is being blamed for two deaths so far and 12 overdoses in the last week alone. “It happens to be much stronger than users have used to date,” said Dis-

trict Attorney John Muehl. “When they use the same amount, it’s causing overdoses.” While bad batches of heroin have caused overdoses in the past, this is the first time one is killing people, he said.

The alarm about “possible tainted heroin” was raised Wednesday, Jan. 14, in a joint statement from county Sheriff Richard J. Devlin, Jr., and Oneonta Police Chief Dennis Nayor. Please See ODs, A7
