Symposium Seeks Unity Vs. Scourge By LIBBY CUDMORE

iting heroin addiction as “an epidemic,” Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig has called for a public symposium to discuss, educate and call leaders to action on the drug crisis. “People have fallen into these addictions,” said Herzig. “It’s not just heroin. It’s prescription pain medications too. It’s an epidemic.” In related developments: • Cooperstown Police Chief Michael Covert said, so far, has referred to rehabilitation 25 addicts who surrendered their “kits” under PAARI (the Police Assisted Addiction & Recovery Initiative, pioneered by Gloucester, Mass., police. • The Oneonta Police Department has delayed launching PAARI, which it had Please See SCOURRGE, A7
