A chopper flying repeatedly over Cooperstown one Wednesday in October reminded folks: The state police Canine Unit has been quietly training dozens of dogs a year from its facility on Chicken Hill Farm Road since 2000, when a Clark Foundation grant enabled construction of a state-of-the-art facility there. That day, K9 trainees were being acclimated to riding in helicopters.

o many choices, but Diff knows he has to make the right one. He sniffs a suitcase, a box, then goes back to the suitcase to claw at it. It’s where the synthetic heroin is hidden, and trainer Rob Turnbull of Oneonta’s Troop C, rewards him with his toy. “They do it all for the toy,” said Turnbull. “It’s how we train them to sniff out the drugs – we put the toy in the box, then later, we put the drugs in with the toy, then just the drugs.” Diff is one of 14 dogs training at the Canine Training Academy on Chicken Farm Hill Road, just up East Lake Road.
