R

eputation matters. Five years ago, suppliers started spreading the words that Brooks’ House of BBQ was getting into the con-

tract-bottling business.

That was all it took. Today, Brooks is contract bottling for 150 clients, “and we haven’t even scratched the surface,� said proprietor Ryan Brooks. That potential won the company a

$100,000 state grant in August to help underwrite a 6,000-square-foot expansion. That will quadruple the 2,000-square-foot plant behind the Route 7 chicken-barbecue mecca on the city’s East End. hen Ben Guenther and Blaine Jennings hosted their first community event at Five Star Subaru in the fall of 2005, they expected a handful of kids to swing by and say hi to their special guest, SpongeBob SquarePants. “We had 2,000 kids,� said Guenther. “The line went around the showroom. SpongeBob was there posing for pictures for hours.�

The duo, who bought the comSMALL pany with a plan to BUSINESS “build it around the AWARD community,� knew they had something special on their hands. “We had SpongeBob back; we’ve had Dora and Scooby-Doo,� said Guenther. “It got so big we had to move it down the park.
