OTSEGO COUNTY JURIST SERVED ON HIGH COURT
W hile it’s not known what other U.S. Supreme
Court justices may have visited Cooperstown – perhaps attending a Hall of Fame Induction – Otsego County’s bar can claim Samuel Nelson, a justice in 1845-72, among its own. Nelson, who practiced law and lived at 70 Main St., Cooperstown, where Shoeless Joe’s Hall of Shame is located today, was appointed by John Tyler in the president’s waning months in office. His 27 years on the court were mostly uneventful, but he did host a surreptitious meeting locally during the Civil War between Secretary State William Seward and ambassadors from European nations that the federal government was trying to keep from picking sides.
Oneonta’s Green Earth Market Embraces Green Energy By LIBBY CUDMORE ONEONTA

t’s been less than two months since Dean and Emily Roberts put the solar panels on the roof
of the Green Earth health food market, and they’re already starting to notice the difference in their electric bill. “Our July bill was half of June bill,” said Dean. “We use a lot of power, with AC and refrigeration.” The 132-panel system captures
sunlight and transmits it to the converter in the basement. If they capture more than they use, it’s “sold” back to NYSEG as credits. “The big savings isn’t in what you sell,” Dean said. “It’s in what you don’t buy.” For the Robertses, the choice to
go solar was in line with the Green Earth’s holistic philosophy. “Do no harm,” said Dean. “We want to live as lightly as we can.” “Our electrician is in the solar business,” Emily said. “He told us about grants and why it’s good Please See SOLAR, B2
