L

ast fall, wildlife artist David Kiehm had a reckoning. By any measure, he was a success in his field. Soon after getting out of the School of Visual Design in 1990, he was a regular illustrator for Field & Stream, a coveted achievement for anyone in his field. That led to a decade as graphic director of the Danbury Mint in Norwalk, Conn., designing wildlife

commemorative coins for a national audience. Since moving back Upstate seven years ago, the professional laurels multiplied. He was regularly selected for the foremost juried shows, including the annual “Art of the Animal Kingdom” in Bennington, Vt. His works were hanging in – and selling from – The Decoy & Wildlife Gallery in Frenchtown, N.J., first in the field. Which evolved into the question: 40-something with plenty of career to go, could he reach his profession’s heights?
