he Glimmerglass Opera, now Festival, has come a long way, baby, in the almost four decades since enthusiasts gathered on CCS’ Sterling Auditorium stage to perform “La Boheme.” When the 39th season opens Friday, July 4, with “Madame Butterfly” – “a great first opera,” Francesca Zambello calls it – there will be the four expected new productions, adjusted since Zambello’s arrival as general & artistic director (this is her third season) to include a Broadway hit musical, “Carousel” this year. Couple To Reopen Worcester General Store, Downtown Mainstay By JIM KEVLIN WORCESTER

T

he only full-service market between Cobleskill and Oneonta – its loss was mourned by merchants and shoppers alike in this largely intact Victorian downtown – will soon be back in business. These days, Brian Caulfield, a contractor from New York City – he and his wife, Elizabeth McGuckin, have owned a house here since 1999 – can be found inside the

century-old structure, gutting the former market with the goal of reopening it by mid-July as the Worcester General Store & Market. He kiddingly reported to one of his daughters: “It’s under construction, already behind schedule, and over budget.” But it’s his business, so he doesn’t have to explain it to any boss.
