Old Street Signs New By LIBBY CUDMORE

COOPERSTOWN

W

ith a painter’s eyes, May-Britt Joyce noticed that something was amiss in Cooperstown. “I saw that all the old street signs were rusty,” she said. “They looked terrible.” The 34 black-and-white street signs that marked intersections of Pine and Lake, Walnut and Linden, and Hill and Main Streets – among others – had fallen into disrepair. “And I thought, ‘I can do something’.” She consulted with Village Trustee Cindy Falk, who chairs the Streets Committee, Instead of something green like about repainting the signs this... herself. “We didn’t realize how bad they looked,” said Falk. Joyce began with the sign at the corner of Hill and Main streets, on Irish Hill. The village delivered the signs to her and in her basement workshop, she sands, primes and then repaints the signs with rustproof paint. The village then picks them up and erected the fresh signs.
