From the Editor Welcome to February! I like to start off by saying "Thank You!" This is our 24th publication and with this issue, we were challenged in instituting a few changes that would steer our magazine into another successful year. The first change is our distribution date. With new content, the exciting new opportunities, and the direction we cannot produce as a weekly magazine – all which is attributed to the growth made possible by our readers and content providers. Starting with this issue, AllNite Communications will resume as a monthly publication and we urge everyone to subscribe while it is free. In addition, we ask that you let everyone know we are here and enlarging our territory. As it is February it is also Black History Month where we celebrate the achievements of African Americans and recognize the central role of blacks in U.S. history. I also believe it is a time of reflection and realization for we have come so far but have so much further to go. Therefore we welcome you to celebrate with us in this Black Compilation. What we have compiled in this edition is by no means exhaustive nor is a numeric ranking. Neither does it negate or ignore the many more African Americans whose accomplishments we may not have noted in this edition. We recognize that the pool of overachievers, groundbreaking, and relevant African Americans is indeed bottomless. However as we include only a small bit of our most influential black American, continue to follow Allniteradio via our social media for our daily acknowledgment of black history facts. In this issue, we also pay tribute to Black Love as this is the month designated for romance and while we encourage you to love on each other every day please take the time to show that special one a bit more affection. Until next month stay blessed and be a blessing to someone. Deirdra

he Month of Romance

In one of our earlier publications, I did an article on black love. Which is why this feature is not only relevant but appropriate as some prepare to dazzle and re-claim, reestablish or validate their love for Valentine’s Day. However, before we show off black love here is a little history behind the much commercialized Valentine’s Day. Every February 14, couples across the United States, are running around gathering candy, flowers, and gifts to exchange to confirm their love for their significant other all in the name of St. Valentine. Approximately 150 million Valentine’s Day cards exchange hands on this special day in addition to couples going overboard to shower their love with love – spending that extra dollar, going to that expensive restaurant you had your eye on or making special “valentine day” plans for the weekend.

February has long been the month to celebrate romance in the name of St. Valentine’s Day, which contains remnants of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. For example, the Catholic Church legend states that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. According to one story, at one-time marriage for young men was outlawed under Emperor Claudius II, however, Valentine decided to marry young lovers in secret despite the law. Of course, there are other accounts of St. Valentine fighting for love and many are still a bit fuzzy, however, they all accentuate his plea as a compassionate, brave and extremely romantic priest as he becomes one of the most popular saints in England and France.

The Month of Romance...cont. To stay on track with the article and in celebration of Black Love, I will only allude to the foundation of Valentine’s Day being a “Christianize” effort of the pagan celebration called Lupercalia – a fertility festival. Yup, that’s right people another pagan holiday commercialized to strip you of all your loot. Nevertheless, here we are February 14th. Personally, Valentine’s Day wasn’t as important to me until I put my own definition of the day to use. Regardless what our own definition or what the day represents to us I believe it is very important to celebrate the love between black couples until it is contagious and thriving in our community. When I turn on my television and look through the programming I am reminded that Black Love is not acknowledged nor celebrated. Family shows are more prone to show black couples arguing, fighting, and exposing themselves – we are no longer the Huxtables - a successful black couple raising a family together. Nor are we portrayed as the black couple going through the trials of life and continue loving each other like James and Florida Evans. Thankfully I have been given authority to show real love. No false models but real couples and how they celebrate each other. Join us in wishing these couples and all couples who are proving love exist this Valentine’s Day and every day this year.

TRAVEL INSPIRED NO GYM? NO PROBLEM. HERE’S A 20-MINUTE WORKOUT YOU CAN DO ANYWHERE.

Traveling can make it hard to keep up with your exercise routine. Whether you’re hauling bags through terminals, sitting for hours and hours on a plane or bus, or sleeping in different (and sometimes uncomfortable) beds — the toll that traveling can take on your body can be significant. It’s not uncommon for frequent travelers to experience back and joint pain, neck strains, and tension headaches. Some hotels have gym areas, but not all do, and quality and availability of equipment can vary greatly. Add to that the fact that you’re usually away from a kitchen, is probably eating (awesome) calorie-packed foods, and are totally out of any normal routine, and it’s easy to see why so many travelers return from trips feeling a little sore and maybe less than healthy. So how do you stay strong and pain-free while away from home? The thing is, we tend to make working out an event. If you belong to a gym or studio, you pack your bag, drive there, find your locker, get dressed, go to a class or do your workout. You might shower afterward if you have somewhere to go directly. All of this takes time. Our workouts start to feel like a 2-hour commitment because that’s what we do when we’re at home and have that time. The truth? You can work out your whole body in about 20 minutes, anywhere, with zero exercise equipment. All you really need is your own body to provide the resistance and the bag you brought with you. Here’s a super-simple 2-step hotel room workout developed by fitness expert Steve Kamb that you can take anywhere (even outside!) and even tweak as you progress:

Travel Inspired cont Step 1: Warm-up (3-4 minutes). Get your core temperature warmed up, get the blood flowing, and loosen up muscles by doing the following in rapid succession: • 25 jumping jacks • 15 bodyweight squats • 10 push ups • 10 lunges (each leg) • 10 hip raises • 25 more jumping jacks Step 2: Work the circuit (15 minutes). Now set a timer for 15 minutes. Go through these exercises as many times as you can in succession until the timer goes off, ideally without breaks — although it’s fine to build up to that over time. The most important thing is to keep proper form for each one, even if you can’t do all of them or if you need to take a break. • 20 Body Weight Squats (see this guide for the best form) • 15 Incline Push Ups (have your feet on floor and your hands on the edge of your bed or desk) • 10 One-Arm Luggage Rows (each arm, use your suitcase, carry on, or backpack as your weight) • 10 Reverse Crunches (here is a guide for doing this while protecting your lower back and strengthening your core, which will help fend off low back problems)

And…that’s it. 15 minutes, and you’re done. Finish up with a few minutes of stretching and deep breathing, and you’ll be set. Imagine the difference that doing that even just three times a week would make on your trip. What would it be like to come back from vacation stronger and in better shape than when you left? Some travelers take on this challenge for longer trips! It’s been done — people do this routine on the beach at sunset, in beautiful parks, in the hotel gym. Once it’s just part of your travel routine, you’ll find all kinds of new (and sometimes hilarious) places to take 15 minutes to care for yourself. As always, if you need help finding the perfect spot to do incline push-ups — or maybe relax with a book and a drink post-workout — I would be thrilled to help you get there. You can get in touch with me today by clicking here. I look forward to hearing from you! ~ Martha Dockery .

OUR BOOK GURU ISATTA THORLU-BANGURA I love reading books and judging them. I am told not to judge a book by it’s cover, so I judge the content and then judge the cover (often times when the content is trash the cover is as well). The majority of the books posted will be reviews, better yet judgments. I feel as a book consumer, the best thing one can do is review the books they read in order to inform the author of what their consumers like and what their consumers dislike. I rate books based on the Goodreads star system, I don’t do half stars because…meh. Join me as we explore another fascinating read...or not

THE ABOMINABLE BOOK GIRL BOOK BLOGGER: ISATTA THORLU-BANGURA Portia Carmichael had her whole life planned. Included in her plans was being #foreveralone because the men of the 1880s were more or less pig-headed, disrespectful imbeciles. Then Kenton Randolph came back into her life. The now mature cowboy was far more handsome and rugged than the 18year-old who used to call her "Duchess" when she was 12. Portia begins to have feelings she had once sworn she would never have. Once again, I tried to do this thing where I try to see if I can predict what route this book is going in because Beverly Jenkins never does any wrong! I predicted a bit of it but not everything. This book is filled with great examples of love and unconventional families. Jenkins takes time to teach about one of the escapes of the great Apache Chief Geronimo as well as continuing to enlighten her readers about life for people of color in the 1800s. I loved Portia! She is a bright, kind, and witty woman. She has many talents and while cooking is not on that list, she is a great bookkeeper. I was fascinated by the many obstacles of a woman of color in the 1800's starting a business outside of the conventional "female" practices. I adore the effort Jenkins puts into ensuring a happily ever after and women who have brains, beauty, and know-how.  Looking for a good book? Visit THE ABOMINABLE BOOK GIRL

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE SADAQASADAQAX

But I Love Him... Dear Sadaqa, My boyfriend is unhappy with his hours at work because he feels like he works 12-hour shifts 4 to 6 days a week only to come home and not really enjoy himself. He doesn't get to binge watch Netflix or play hours upon hours of video games, every time he comes home I pass off my son to him so I can get housework done and because I know he misses his dad, and the house is always a mess (whose house isn't?) but he isn't willing to ask his boss for fewer hours or change jobs. Keep in mind he can easily change any of his grievances by being willing to put a little effort into his life but instead, he decides somehow it's my fault he isn't enjoying himself when he gets home. It's my fault he can't relax because I pass the baby to him.

It's my fault he works so much because it's my fault we have bills to pay. It's my fault I cant prevent the baby from crying at night and disrupting his sleep. He keeps seeing posts online about sex games and now he's mad at me because he "knows I would never do anything like that." He never asked me before he came to this conclusion and frankly who would want to have sex with such a jerk? He blames all his life's problems on me and asks for a blowjob in the same sentence. He pisses me off. I was willing to try but apparently saying that isn't enough, I have to be fine with anal and oral too. I don't think he will ever be happy. He refuses to let me get a job to help with bills either but constantly complains that we have no money. I've decided to take over the family funds and be in charge of that to shut him up. The real reason for our financial issues is how much he spends on a whim on junk food and cars, Continued on page 35

ALLNITE COMMUNICATIONS - BLACK HISTORY EDITION

I think he's spent 100 dollars on me all year, less on the baby. I'm starting to fall out of love with him because of his shit attitude... I don't want to leave him, I do love him, I just wish he would grow up and take charge of his life if he's so miserable. Then maybe I'd want to sleep with him more often. But right now I feel like I'm sleeping with a big child and that's definitely NOT a turn on. Â I know I'm not perfect either and he works hard, but on days when he's home because work is slow he could at least help with some laundry or dishes or change a diaper! I feel like I can't get him to help with anything because even leaving the baby with him for 15 minutes while I shower leaves him in a sour mood. Is there some happy pill or something I can crush into his food because I'm starting to dread it when his shift is about to end.

PAGE 38

Dear But I love Him, ...the frustrations you are describing are typical of this situation. Your man is providing for you financially and based on your post, there's not an endless supply of money (12 hour days, can't save, not enough to spend on you etc) That's a frustrating situation that often leads the dissolution of relationships. (It doesn't have to dissolve, but the risks are higher) So, men in this situation basically see it this way ..."I went out and worked all day to provide for my family" when they come home they basically wanna stretch out and receive the reward and are thinking, "so, why isn't my wife in my lap?" Â (Basic Hunter/Gather stuff I'm talking here) But let's take a solution-focused view because you want to be successful...first, stop making excuses for not doing your job. Your job is the house and you must find a way to tend to it better BEFORE he gets home. 2nd: try doing things in reverse...greet this man at the front door with food and intimacy..let him be optimistic that he will get some actual sex later and he might overlook the dishes in the sink. leave the man alone after work, carve an hour or two of downtime for him to de-stress when he gets home. 4th; (and these are not in order) are you depressed? (No judgment if u are..but consider it. It's totally treatable) Good luck Sister Sadaqa

UP CLOSE WITH AYANNA GREGORY

PAGE 41

For this singer, dramatist, educator and activist, music and art are more than entertainment; they are her mission.

“Through her stylistic versatility, Ayanna takes listeners on a musical journey beyond commercial radio” -Tavis Smiley Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Ms. Ayanna Gregory, daughter of famed comedian and activist, Dick Gregory. Ayanna took time out to answer some questions from local media while in the Atlanta area for several special appearances. Singer/songwriter & activist, Ayanna Gregory performed @ The King Center Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Ecumenical Commemorative Service on January 15th, 2018 where speakers included such luminaries as Dr. Bernice A. King, Pastor David Yonggi Cho, Dr. Deborah A. Bartlett, Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. She also performed at the High Heels with High Tea at the Hyatt Regency on Thursday, January 18th.

The High Tea with High Heels at the Hyatt is a proud tradition of the Trumpet Awards that combines the elegance of high tea, high heels and high fashion to create a truly unique event honoring a select group of distinguished women. UP CLOSE WITH AYANNA GREGORY

During the media event Ayanna touched on many subjects concerning her music and her mission. She talked about what inspired her to become what she calls a 'healing voice' with her music. She talked about the strong influences in her life that helped her find her passion. She spoke eloquently about what inspires her as a singer and songwriter. She shared her experiences mentoring youth and teaching them how to heal themselves.

I had the chance to ask Ms. Gregory, whose dad was just recognized with an NAACP image award for his writing about civil rights and his life in the struggle, if she could talk about what it was like having such an outspoken pro black dad as a child. She related some amazing stories about traveling the world with her dad meeting everyone from Hollywood stars and famous musicians to sharecroppers and other oppressed groups in the Deep South. She even talked about facing down the guns of racists in the Deep South and the very real dangers she, her siblings and her dad faced as they bought his message of speaking to power and calling America on its racism. If you've never had a chance to see Ayanna perform, she'll be at Morehouse College on February 12th as part of the schools Black History Month celebrations.
