Each week as I sit down to connect with you, our readers, in this publication, I think about what we can share that might be meaningful to your life. Over the past few months this "newsletter" has spiraled into what is now a weekly magazine. No doubt it has been a journey which shows continuous growth and ambition stemming from the support received by the artists and the encouragement of our writers. As the editor, one of my concerns is what can we continue to offer that will prove worthy of your continued support especially in our current atmosphere. I still struggle with the idea of how this magazine can be a great resource of information and it is still scary. However I am surrounded by some of the best people and I am reminded that we are created without fear. Therefore I ask that you stick around and enjoy the ride as we bring you articles that will make you think, dream, and smile...and definitely tap your feet. Until next week, continue to be blessed and most importantly be a blessing to someone else. Deirdra

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS | JANUARY 2018

THE 2018 GOLDEN GLOBE

It’s time to kick off the 2018 award season! Last night Seth Meyers hosted the 75th Golden Globe Awards. If you don't know the ceremony honored several standouts in film and television in 2017. If you are anything like me the feeling I get is "meh", however I am an avid movie go'er. Needless to say I am always curious to see who walked away with the award and who made the tear jerking "they really like me" speech.

Specifically, again only speaking for me, I wonder which black actors, actresses, directors and writers walked away with this prestigious award. Being recognized for your craft by your peers and fans must feel exceptionally gratifying however we know all to well how great performances have been overlooked. Not until recently we have been shown an abundance of love - not because it was absence but because it was overdue and deserved.

This year was no different from the years before with regards to our favorites and who we wanted to see win the award. To quote Issa Rae, "I'm rooting for everybody black," from TV to motion pictures. So if you didn't watch and just need the highlights of the evening, we got you covered.

NOMINEES & WINNERS Let's get started - Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy category we have "Get Out" written and directed by Jordan Peele. Why in this category? Who knows. However Jordan Peele did not win this year as he was beat out by "Lady Bird".

For the second year we have Issa Rae for "Insecure" & Anthony Anderson for "Black-ish" who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a TV Series Musical or Comedy. Unfortunately both failed to take home the globe.

Nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama was Denzel Washington for "Roman J. Israel, Esq., which he lost to Gary Oldman, "Darkest Hour". Best Performance by Actor in a Musical or Comedy was new comer Daniel Kaluuya who lost to James Franco, "The Disaster Artist". Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture was singer/actress Mary J. Blige for "Mudbound" (great movie by the way). and Octavia Spencer for "The Shape of Water' who was beat out by Allison Janney, "I, Tonya"

As this year's awards show wraps up we would like to congradulate those that were nominated as well as wonthe prize. But a special congradulations goes to this year's Cecil B. Demille Award recipient Oprah Winfrey.

No surprise here, Best Television Series Drama was comprised of a few - "Game of Thrones", "Stranger Things", and "This Is Us" all of which lost to "The Handmaid's Tale". In the category of Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy of course is "Master of None" and "Black-ish" which lost to "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel". In the category of Best Performance by an actor in a TV Series or Drama is Sterling K. Brown in "This Is Us".

WHY JANUARY 1ST BY

KAHLIL

HAYNES

For a day that's supposed to represent some of the biggest parties literally ringing in the new year, it's always cold in places that have any sort of cold weather and it's after the holidays so that much of your festive spirit, (and discretionary budget) are already spent. Not to mention the fact that the real season of renewal is still three months away. So why do we force another holiday in and start the new year with frozen toes and barren fields?

So another new year has begun, filled with the promise of resolute change and the new birth of the coming spring. Everywhere you go you find people, in different ways, leaving the old year behind and beginning anew on the first of January. But a weird thing occurred to me as I listened to my friends and family lie to me about how hard they're going to work at the gym and how much they're going to avoid putting poisons in their bodies ... why January 1st?

Well it turns out that it all has to do with calendars, man made devices for tracking long periods of time. Tracking time through the marking of days, lunar cycles and the earth's laps around the sun is a really ancient practice with archeologists reconstructing rudimentary time keeping devices from as long ago as the neolithic period (10,200 - 4500 BC).

SCIENCE | TECH NEWS | JANUARY 2018

Throughout the ages, various peoples have refined the methods of tracking longer periods of time using celestial bodies like the stars, moons and planets. Early Sumerian and Egyptian cultures give us our earliest examples of specific systems used to track the days and seasons. As time went by, other cultures developed ways of measuring the days that not only differed in method, but which also had other cultural elements attached to how time was tracked. For instance, early egyptian solar calendars were built around the idea of the inundation: The yearly flood of the Nile river that allowed egypt to become one of the greatest nations in the history of the planet. So it's understandable that egyptians built their timekeeping around this element of their culture. So how did we end up celebrating the new year in the dead of winter? We can thank another calendar that was as much cultural as it was scientific: The Julian calendar. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar, emperor of the Roman empire decreed a new calendar be created to help rectify problems with the current calendar system in use. The first problem was that the original calendar used at the time was based on phases of the moon. Since the moon phase only takes around 28 days, the calendar would frequently fall behind and miscalculate the seasons. Another problem was that corrupt church officials would keep adding days to the calendar randomly as a way of controlling political outcomes. To fix this Caesar enlisted an Alexandrian astronomer named Sosigenes who advised Caesar to borrow from the method used by the Egyptians and track time using the sun instead.

For reasons lost to the dust of history, Caesar had 67 days added to his new calendar, moving the first day of 44 BC from March, (spring as you would expect from the Egyptian calendar), to January. While the practice has fallen out of favor from time to time, and is based on a faulty calendar, it still remains as a world wide tradition today. Sigh.

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE SADAQASADAQAX

Dear Sadaqa, FOLLOW ME TWITTER, INSTAGRAM & TUMBLR @SADAQASADAQAX EMAIL YOUR RELATIONSHIP QUESTIONS TO SADAQALATIONS@GMAIL.COM

My father is 68, active and in good health. Lately he has become increasingly obsessed with deciding who will get which of his belongings when he passes. Almost every conversation now consists of some form of "Do you think your cousin Joey would like my antique fishing lure collection?" I'm glad he's thinking ahead and putting his affairs in order, but it has been months since we've been able to talk about normal things, and I feel like he's missing out on living in the present. I finally had to tell Dad to stop asking my young kids which of his childhood toys they would like when he dies because it was freaking them out. They no longer want to go over there because they're terrified he's going to keel over in front of them. How do I get him to stop this, move on and continue living his life? I'm pretty sure he doesn't have an illness he's keeping secret. Obsessiveness is normal for him, but this topic is new. -- ADULT SON IN FLORIDA

OUR BOOK GURU ISATTA THORLU-BANGURA I love reading books and judging them. I am told not to judge a book by it’s cover, so I judge the content and then judge the cover (often times when the content is trash the cover is as well). The majority of the books posted will be reviews, better yet judgments. I feel as a book consumer, the best thing one can do is review the books they read in order to inform the author of what their consumers like and what their consumers dislike. I rate books based on the Goodreads star system, I don’t do half stars because…meh. Join me as we explore another fascinating read...or not
