We have lots of exciting volunteering events lined up for you guys, such as the Big Event. Which is where we try to have as much volunteering events in a day. The board members have been working to get multiple volunteering opportunities on that day. Also, elections are near so if you want to please apply. We need you to be the leader in Key Club.

Message From the President Hey Key Clubbers!

Happy March! I know this past February was way too short and way too cold, but I am excited about this month! That’s because this month, we are having elections. Applications can be found on Canvas Announcements and are due the 24th. Applicants are required to create a video speech that will be shared with the general members who will watch and vote on them starting March 31st. I highly encourage applying because it’s a great way to learn new things and make friends! If you are interested in having a leadership role I also encourage you to email me or Mr. McCown about registering for LEDCON. We also have the Big Event on Monday, April 5th so make sure to clear your calendars for that day!

Next Steps in Key Club By: Cing Deih My next step in my Key Club journey is hopefully becoming a board member for one of the elementary schools next year. I’ve realized this year as a Freshman Representative that I actually really enjoy organizing events such as volunteering opportunities and I like being able to help the community. I remember when I was interviewing for the current position I’m in right now and how nerve-racking it was for me. Salma, the Key Club President, was very welcoming and chill so that calmed my nerves quite a bit. It’s just nice having some experience for next year, when I hopefully become a board member again. Also, election season is coming up. I know that it’s a pretty big time commitment though, so just make sure that if you are running that you’re actually passionate and committed to the job. Currently, my chair is organizing a volunteering opportunity for the Freshmen class. As most of you know, the water leak caused a great deal of damage to the classrooms and affected many teachers. Teachers will need help organizing and cleaning before or afterschool. Another thing happening in Key Club soon is the big event! Obviously, this year’s big event is going to be a bit different, but I also know that we’ll make it work. My partner, Allison Turner, and I are still coming up and working out ideas for this event, and we are very enthusiastic about it! Along with many others, I still need some more service hours, so I’m pretty grateful for the big event and all of the volunteering opportunities.

Inclusivity In the Club By: Andreas Chatzigiannidisi Although this year has been unpredictable, to say the least, Key Club has worked through the challenges together. We have been focused on making sure we provide as many opportunities as we can to come together like we have in the past, and help others in our community in a safe risk-free way. During our socials we have tried to still create fun events that bring our members together and help us grow as a club. Along with creating risk free meetings and socials due to Covid, we have also been trying to provide students with numerous safe ways to help out and volunteer in the community. Additionally, we have been providing students with opportunities to volunteer at the flycatcher trail near the highschool. Students are allowed to come and go at their discretion for a few hours on selected days and have the chance to bring themselves, as well as friends and family, to help out at the flycatcher trail. This event not only allows for students to volunteer in a risk free way, but it also gets students outdoors and spending time with others. One great way for many of our members to be a part of our club and be able to volunteer this year is through our big event. Our big event is being planned for April 8th, and will be a full day full of numerous different ways to volunteer in safe and helpful ways.

Through this event we hope to get as many students as possible to volunteer and be included in what Key Club is all about, helping our community.

Why I Joined Key Club

I joined the key club because I wanted to experience and learn the ways I could help in my community. The Key Club has succeeded in helping students of all ages and abilities by giving us the opportunity to experience the real world and discover how we can help. While doing so, the Key Club has given me the opportunity to grow in leadership and as a citizen. With so many different events, I've learned to step up when needed and take on the task of leading others. Furthermore, I have been able to take on the role as a board member for the Key Club. We get to learn about what organizations help our world grow and in times like these, we need to be exposed to the effects things have on our communities. Also, as we age it's important for us to be more informed in our worldly matters so that were better prepared for our own futures; and what better way to experience that than firsthand! It's given me the opportunity to come together with others for a common purpose and have fun while doing it! Each meeting, event, and social event has allowed us to learn more about the power we have together and that is what I think is the most important reason for why I joined the Key Club… because we are given the ability to see the power we have to make a difference in the world together. It doesn't matter our age, race, gender, we all have the ability to make a difference in the lives of those who need it. Key Club has found organizations and events that have brought that message to life, so I can't imagine being without it!

Flycatcher Trail By: Mariam Siddiqui Jenks Key Club is looking forward to a workday at the Flycatcher Trail on March 6 between 1 pm and 4 pm. Students are free to spend as long as they would like, during the designated volunteering time, helping the community while enjoying time outdoors with friends and family. This opportunity is a fun way to earn service hours and assist in preparing the Trail for Spring. The Jenks Flycatcher Trail is filled with hundreds of species of native plants and diverse wildlife. There is no limit to the number of people who can volunteer since the event will be held outdoors.

Members of Jenks Key Club are invited to bring their friends and family to assist with the project. The weather forecast predicts that the sun will be shining brightly, nourishing the plants and soil and that the temperature will remain between a beautiful sixty-five and seventy degrees on the day of the event. One does not need to be an experienced gardener to volunteer, as long as they have a love for nature. t is not necessary to purchase gardening tools to assist at the event, as gloves and tools will be provided on-site. Volunteers should bring water bottles to prevent dehydration due to the nature of the work and warm weather. If you have sensitive skin and are prone to sunburn, sunscreen isn’t a bad idea either. Masks, however, are mandatory to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The Jenks Flycatcher Trail is located behind the Freshman Academy on F street. Anyone who has any questions may contact Ms. Wright.

Jenks Key Club looks forward to seeing volunteers on Saturday, March 6 at its workday at Flycatcher Trail between 1 pm and 4 pm!
