Factor-H provides humanitarian and medical aid for local communities widely affected

by Huntington’s Disease, and this design incorporates their priorities of accessibility, inclusion, wellness, and community. Key design factors include pitched roofs that enable rain water harvesting, photovoltaic panels, and natural ventilation; local, low-cost recycled building materials; community mural walls; moveable security doors for flexible configurations of internal space; and an edible community garden.

The process of life is often portrayed as a linear journey in which death defines the end.

In realizing the cyclical nature between life and death, water is used as a catalyst to unite these two seemingly opposing entities. Vitality serves a community that believes in giving back to Earth while pointing to the future of conscious burial practices.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Here, this bridging manifests in a series of interconnected layers.

Occurring simultaneously, the mechanical process of bio-cremation, emotional journey of loss, and ritual funeral procession are experienced in unity with water as the guiding force, revitalizing the way we interpret death. New technologies are enacted to preserve sacred traditions while elevating them to respond to the impending future.

Road to Reunion Bobby Brooks Memorial Interdisciplinary Design Studio Cal Poly Pomona | Fall 2019 Design Studio Individual Project | Instructor: Irma Ramirez, Andrew Wilcox Tools used: Rhinoceros, Enscape, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, Lightroom 1 BIO|CREMATION The mechanical process of bio-cremation occurs in the sunken building that represents the body’s ultimate return to nature and is expressed on groundlevel with a reflection pool that represents the water used in this process. During a bio-cremation and its corresponding ritual ceremony, the waters are disturbed and pushed with water jets, creating movement and a visceral experience as individuals journey along the primary path beside its overflowing water wall and into the below-ground space to collect their loved one’s remains.

2 RE|COLLECTION

The primary emotional ritual sequence begins with the decent into this compressed, meditative space where families and individuals retrieve the bioashes, and may leave flowers and mementos by which to honor and remember their loved one. The entrance to the space is highlighted with a glass ceiling that is open to the reflection pool above, and as the waters move, the quality of light is constantly in flux, acting as a more tactile experience of the cleansing through water. The families pause here to prepare for the emotional journey ahead, and say their goodbyes to their loved one in the physical realm, as they then continue to the digital archive and chapel spaces beyond.

3 HOME | HEARTH

After the grieving family has resurfaced from the below ground emotional healing sequence, they may decide to commune and share a meal together, reminiscing on their loved one and telling treasured stories in celebration of their life. For these families, the home and hearth provides private, flexible spaces for respite from the public realm. The series of three living room spaces are centered around a representative hearth that allows for the family to place photos or mementos, as a traditional hearth provides.

West Hollywood Housing Housing Project & Design Development Studio Cal Poly Pomona | Spring 2019 Design Studio Project | Instructor: Kip Dickson Tools used: Revit, Rhinoceros, Sketchup, Enscape, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign The curvilinear façade featured in this project paired with the light wood material used throughout serve to soften its relationship to the street and surrounding urban context. The concept was driven by the intent to provide a sense of community within the residential units while highlighting views, natural lighting, and fresh air. Allowing a flexible community open space to exist for the residents and their guests is an important feature. Additionally, the residential units stack vertically, creating an efficient solution to structural and technical considerations.

Los Angeles Small Lot Subdivision Housing Project & Design Development Studio Cal Poly Pomona | Spring 2019 Design Studio Project | Instructor: Kip Dickson Tools used: Revit, Rhinoceros, Sketchup, Enscape, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign This small lot subdivision project targets simple hierarchy of space and a minimal use of enclosures in common areas to achieve an opennes marked by access to plentiful natrual light and ventilation. The windows create a wrapping around corners and fold over the rooflines into skylights, while the strategic placement set back from property lines allows for a healthy boundary from the busy street.

Los Angeles Theater & Cultural Center Sustainable Design Studio Cal Poly Pomona | Spring 2018 Design Studio Project | Instructor: Dr. Hofu Wu Tools used: Rhinoceros, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign An abstraction of natural boulder formations, this project aims to remain consistent with the natural setting of the park in which it sits. While monumental, it invites park patrons to engage in and discover a sense of a larger community while experiencing the various cultural activities housed within. The faceted façades of this structure respond to the sun’s path in this region, maximizing indirect daylight for spaces while shading patrons from the harsh heat of Southern California summers.

Water Conservation Strategies With the LA River being a major neighbor to this site and having such great impact on the seasonal wetland of the park, water convervation and recycling is an important exploration of this project.

Rainwater will be collected using the natural slopes of the angular rooflines, and grey water from sinks and kitchen use will be filtered through the bioswale and infiltrated into the earth through porous gravel.

Energy Conservation Strategies Many of this building’s facades are glass, which allows for natural daylight and therefore significantly minimal use of artificial lighting. This, coupled with the passive strategies mentioned makes for a building that uses little energy. The rest of the needed energy will be supplied by photovoltaic panels on the south-facing exteriors.

Passive Heating Strategies A large amount of this building is concrete, which allows for high thermal mass, direct gain. During the day, heat from the sun will be absorbed by the insulated concrete, and as the temperature drops off into the evening, the heat is naturallly released to the building.

Passive Cooling Strategies Given the vertical stacking of spaces open to outside, this building employs stack ventilation and night flush. Using the solar panels to heat metal panels along the roof, the stratification of hot air will be increased and thus allow for greater air flow and replenishing of cool air.

The ground temperature is more stable than air temperature, so during hot times of the year, cooling will be aided by this system, and during cool times of the year, heating will be aided by this system.
