illa Maria Academy, a Roman Catholic private day school located in Immaculata, Pennsylvania, was established in 1872 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Villa Maria Academy strives to prepare girls to become Christian women assuming leadership and service roles within the family, the local and global community as well as their parish and the universal Church.

While integrating spirituality with academics, the school-wide goals seek to impart a love for life-long learning, the development of critical thinking skills and the nurturing of creativity, beauty, truth and reverence for each person as a unique expression of God’s creation.

The educational program at Villa Maria Academy encourages students to maximize their capabilities, to develop positive self-images and to use these gifts in service to others.

Letter from the Principal Dear Friends of Villa Maria Academy Lower School, Thank you for your generosity to Villa Maria Academy. Over the past year, Villa Maria has been the recipient of generous gifts from the Annual Fund and the Parent Guild. We are grateful to all who have enabled us to continue the legacy of strong faith and character formation and academic excellence.

We continue to focus on the strategic goals outlined in our plan of 2016.

We gave attention to the sustainability of our academy through the improvement of financial protocols and enrollment management in the purchase and implementation of RenWeb, an integrated student database and fiscal management program. In addition, our Mission Advancement and Marketing Offices focused on relationship-building and made great strides in reconnecting with our alumnae.

Additionally, an elective curriculum was added to our academic core offerings. Kindergarten through eighth grade students were able to choose a supplementary weekly class of interest to them. Offerings included glass fusing, public speaking, ukulele, creative writing, and various sessions which made effective use of our plentiful technology resources.

Your contributions have provided us with the ability to give attention to important technological resources for teaching and learning. Furthermore, your gifts have helped us to make teacher professional development relevant, consistent and embedded in daily professional practice. Your gifts have enabled us to provide funding for teachers enrolled in graduate study.

Your faithful commitment to Villa Maria Academy shown through your kindness, your attention to our needs and your ongoing support are an integral part of our continued ability to provide a lasting legacy for all the students here at Villa. Letter from the Parent Guild Dear Friends, The members of the Parent Guild Executive Board would like to thank the Villa Community for a great year of successful community building and fund raising.

The purpose of the Parent Guild is to embrace the school mission and fully support the curriculum, students, faculty and staff. We achieve this by fostering a family environment that creates many opportunities for parental involvement and connection to other members of the Villa family. This past school year, we had one successful event after another beginning with the Back to School Social in September and ending the year with the Eighth Grade Dinner Dance in May. All of the Parent Guild events could not happen without the tireless effort of our event chairpersons and many volunteers. The level of parent involvement at Villa runs deep and binds us together. We express our sincere appreciation to all those who donated their time and talent.

The major Parent Guild fundraising event of the year is the Villa BALL. The 2018 theme, Celebrating Our Angels, was not only a successful social event, celebrating our school community, but it also raised $100,000 to donate to our beloved school. In keeping with our mission of leadership and service, Villa parents also generously supported Trinity Academy, a school in rural Schuylkill County, PA. Classroom supplies and a monetary donation of $5,000 were presented to Trinity to help sustain their mission. We are very thankful to the Villa Parents, friends and business partners who came together to make the 2018 Villa BALL a resounding success.

TLIGHT LEADERSHIP IS SERVICE

As a friend and benefactor of Villa Maria Academy, you already know the great opportunities afforded to students and the life-long benefits of a Villa education. Yet, for each student, different aspects of a Villa education stand as central in their development as women ready to lead and serve in the world, such as dedication, empowerment, confidence and core values. We are proud to introduce you to four of our alumnae who currently serve on the Villa Maria Academy Advisory Board, and who exemplify each of those said characteristics: Bernadette Dougherty, Mary Fran Frankenheimer, Sarah Hanley and Megan Trost. These women are successful leaders both personally and professionally, and generously choose to share their leadership and service talents with us to ensure the continued success of our school.

Together with the other members of the Advisory Board, these four alumnae serve to provide school leadership with the expertise and support to ensure long term viability and sustainability of Villa Maria Academy as a Catholic institution of learning in the Charism and traditions of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

As alumnae, these women understand that here at Villa, leadership is service, and it is present in every segment of Villa life.

Villa’s emphasis on leadership assists every girl to understand the power of her influence from the relationships she forms with others on a daily basis to those that she will form in her personal and professional life. For Megan Trost, Class of 90, it was the emphasis on relationships that continues to influence her life today. “In today’s world, what we do, what we say and how we treat others is more important than ever.

Villa taught us a set of core values

that should be on display in every facet of our lives.”

Those core values are a common bond with Villa alumnae. Our empowered, loving and nurturing environment is what has enabled Mary Fran Frankenheimer, Class of ’84, to create a solid foundation of both faith and academics in her daily life. “The educational foundation was strong and enabled me to move forward knowing that I was well prepared for the academic rigors ahead of me.”

Our graduates are ready to lead others and accept the challenges of life upon graduation, because they are prepared for it from day one here at Villa. When asked how Villa Maria prepared her for what was next, Bernadette Dougherty, Class of ’78, explains, “Villa Maria gave me the tools to develop a faith commitment that I use not only in my personal life, but as a teacher to also prepare students to identify their academic potential and more importantly their Catholic identity.”

Detecting academic potential is something that Sarah Hanley, Class of ’74, sees as a major part of her Villa experience as a student. She acknowledges that her “drive to be a life-long learner is a direct result of her days at Villa Maria Academy.”

That strong desire of learning placed Sarah on a leadership path that greatly enhanced her career.

When you are a life-long learner, you often possess a confidence of self that is apparent to all. This is absolutely true for our Villa students and graduates. Mary Fran possessed that confidence and knew that nothing was impossible when reaching her goals. Her involvement in Villa’s strong athletic program made her transition into college and beyond a success, “I was coached by wonderful role models and leaders who still motivate me today!”

Historically, Villa Maria Academy strives to encourage our students to reach goals and cultivate interests that may have traditionally been considered male in the past,

Bernadette Dougherty Bernadette serves as Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools, Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of Catholic Education. She and her husband, Bill, have two daughters: Amy, 28, and Ashley, 23. Bernadette earned both her BS and MA degrees from Villanova University.

Mary Fran Frankenheimer Mary Fran is Malvern Preparatory School’s Assistant Athletic Director and also the Conditioning Coach for the boy's lacrosse team. She and her husband, Bob, have three sons: Mason, 19, Gavin, 17, and Cooper, 15. Mary Fran earned a dual degree in Sociology and Education from Randolph-Macon College.

Sarah Hanley Sarah serves as the Executive Director of The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia (CFGP).

She and her husband Jim have two sons: David, 23 and Kevin, 20. Sarah earned her BS degree in Marketing and Management from Drexel University.

Megan Trost Megan is the Assistant to the Head of School at Holy Child School at Rosemont. She and her husband, Keith, have two daughters: Claire, 10, and Nora, 8. Megan earned her BS from Villanova University.

Long before STEM curriculums were all the rage, Sarah and her classmates learned that a single-gender education provided girls a superior opportunity to realize that they could be excellent students in math and science. She encourages today’s Villa students – tomorrow’s leaders – to “take advantage of every opportunity and have confidence in yourself – you can accomplish anything you truly believe you can do!”

When alumnae look back on their days at Villa, they often do so with specific memories in mind. “I have so many wonderful memories from Villa,” recalls Megan. “From the wonderful plays that my classmates and I would put on in the projection room, to the May Procession, Blue and White field day,” and so on. Those memories are rooted in leadership and service.

Each activity that our students participate in every day – from the simplest tasks to the more difficult endeavors – prepare students to think like a leader when facing challenges.

Bernadette echoes that sentiment when looking to the future, “What I wish for the current Villa students is to know that each path they take will present challenges: so be brave, have confidence, stay committed to your beliefs and morals and face those challenges head on. As they encounter new experiences, know that they will always have friendship and love of their Villa Maria family even after they leave the school grounds.”

We are so grateful to each of these alumnae for their continued support, dedication and perseverance in making Villa Maria Academy Lower School a continued success. They truly live our motto: Empowering Young Women through Leadership and Service. Thank you!  5

illa Maria Academy Lower School was proud to introduce a wide-ranging electives curriculum to our students for the 2017-18 academic year.

Implementing a variety of additional courses in an electives curriculum for students in grades K-8 gave our students the opportunity to broaden their interests in a range of subjects.

“Our weekly electives curriculum provides studentselected learning experiences in a number of different academic and non-academic areas with students of varying ages,” said Sister Susan. “The benefits extend beyond the actual elective focus to include the opportunity to collaborate with peers and moderators.”

The 45-minute long elective courses were taught by Villa teachers and occur six times per trimester on a rotating schedule. The courses changed each trimester.

In addition to math, language arts, social studies, science, religion and added value courses, students had the opportunity to choose which electives course to enroll in based on their interest and grade.

The electives curriculum exceeded expectations for students and faculty alike. It was a robust and creative means to further supplement our students’ academic

adventures and cultivate their interests. We look forward to the continuance of this supplemental curriculum as a permanent fixture at Villa for years to come. 

Ways to give SUPPORT THE ANNUAL FUND Gifts to the Annual Fund are investments in the IHM traditions that Empower Young Women through Leadership and Service. Each gift, large and small, makes an impact during the year the gift was given. Gifts to the Villa Annual Fund can be made by check or online. MATCH GIFTS Many employers will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. Your gift to Villa may be doubled or possibly tripled! If your company provides this benefit, please obtain a matching gift form and include it with your contribution.

SUPPORT EITC Since 2001, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program has made it possible for businesses to redirect their Pennsylvania tax dollars to schools to support student financial aid. The EITC provides companies with a 75% tax credit for donations or 90% for a two year commitment. A business paying taxes in Pennsylvania can receive up to $300,000 in tax credits annually. In addition, business owners can claim a charitable deduction for the difference between the tax credit amount and the gift.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES A gift of appreciated securities, either publicly traded or from a private company, may provide greater tax advantages than gifts of cash. The donor can deduct the current fair-market value as a charitable gift.
